A private airline flight from Karachi to Lahore issued a distressing Mayday call due to smoke detected in the cargo compartment shortly before the emergency landing. According to a spokesperson for the Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA), the incident occurred near Lahore at 7:15 PM, prompting immediate emergency protocols. The flight, Fly Jinnah’s FL 846, was carrying passengers and crew who were all safely evacuated after landing at Lahore Airport at 7:23 PM.
As per the PAA spokesperson, the airport fire department was on standby as part of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to address any potential emergencies. After the safe evacuation of all passengers, the fire department conducted a thorough inspection of the aircraft and declared it free from any immediate danger by 7:57 PM.
Authorities have since ordered a full investigation into the cause of the smoke, with high-ranking officials closely monitoring the situation. While the incident caused momentary concern, quick action by the crew and ground staff ensured the safety of all aboard, averting a potential crisis.
What is a Mayday call?
A Mayday call is a globally recognized distress signal used by aircraft and ships to communicate life-threatening emergencies. It’s transmitted using radio communications and repeated three times (“Mayday mayday mayday”) to ensure clarity.
The term originated in 1923 from the French phrase “m’aidez,” meaning “Help me,” and was adopted as a clearer alternative to the previously used S.O.S. signal, which was often hard to distinguish via telephone. The primary information needed when responding to a Mayday call is the caller’s location, as this allows rescuers to know where to go to provide assistance.
