During a session of the Punjab Assembly, Transport Minister Bilal Akbar unveiled plans for a major transformation in Lahore’s public transportation system with the introduction of electric buses. Presiding over the session was Deputy Speaker Zahira Iqbal Channar, who witnessed the announcement of this significant initiative.
Under the plan, Lahore will see the operation of 27 electric buses by December 2024, marking a significant shift towards sustainable urban mobility. Additionally, hybrid buses will be deployed across various districts of Punjab as part of a broader effort to modernize public transport infrastructure in the region.
The move towards a modern public transport system aligns with recent initiatives aimed at enhancing public services in Punjab. Notably, on May 10, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the Clinics on Wheels project, an innovative endeavor to provide healthcare services to remote communities. With 200 mobile clinics slated for deployment in densely populated urban areas, the project is expected to benefit millions by addressing the challenges associated with accessing healthcare facilities.
Emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving public services, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif highlighted the importance of bringing essential health services to people’s doorsteps. The Clinics on Wheels project will particularly focus on underserved areas, with state-of-the-art cardiology facilities set to be established in eight cities across Punjab, including Mianwali, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Jhelum, among others.
These initiatives mark a comprehensive strategy aimed at improving urban infrastructure and public services in Punjab, reflecting the government’s dedication to enhancing the well-being and quality of life for its residents while fostering sustainability and accessibility in transportation and healthcare sectors alike.
