WhatsApp Introduces Meta AI Chatbot Feature in Pakistan

WhatsApp has introduced the Meta AI chatbot feature in Pakistan, offering users prompt-based conversational responses. Unlike traditional updates, this feature doesn’t require manual downloading; it’s a server-side update.

Users are advised to keep their app updated to access new features seamlessly. Meta AI can be accessed by tapping the new search bar labeled “Ask Meta AI or Search” or the Meta AI icon within the app. Similar to ChatGPT, it responds to prompts such as “Help set fitness goals” or “Solo travel benefits,” with the option to type custom prompts.

Emojis can also be used for interaction. The chatbot can generate AI images within minutes, albeit with limited resolution and labeled as AI-made, which can be downloaded and shared like regular media. It’s compatible with group chats, facilitating group interactions.

On WhatsApp Desktop, it’s referred to as “AI Character,” offering the same functionalities. Chat history with Meta AI is synced across all devices, ensuring continuity between phone and desktop.

Government Initiates Thar to Port Qasim Railway Construction

The federal government is embarking on the construction of a 105-kilometre railway track from Thar to Port Qasim, aimed at transporting coal from local fields to power plants. In collaboration with the Sindh government, this project is poised to revolutionize coal transportation in Pakistan’s energy landscape. While the initiative promises to enhance the nation’s energy mix with cost-effective coal-based power, concerns have been raised regarding its environmental and social implications.

An expert in the field highlighted potential issues such as depleted water and air quality, loss of livelihoods, and disruption of ecosystems along the railway track’s route. The project’s passage through agricultural land, reserved forests, and human settlements raises apprehensions about its impact on local communities and ecosystems.

Criticism has also been directed towards claims suggesting reduced electricity prices, with past environmental challenges at Port Qasim Authority serving as a cautionary tale. The expert emphasized the necessity for rigorous environmental assessments and mitigation strategies to address these concerns and safeguard the interests of local communities and industrial units.

Amidst these apprehensions, achieving a delicate balance between economic development and environmental conservation is imperative for the project’s success. Transparency, accountability, and stakeholder engagement are pivotal in fostering public trust and support. By prioritizing environmental and social considerations, Pakistan can ensure the long-term sustainability and prosperity of infrastructure projects like the Thar-Port Qasim railway track.

Five more SC judges receive suspicious letters

Amid escalating concerns over the safety of judiciary members, the Supreme Court faced another alarming development as five more judges received suspicious letters on Friday. The targeted judges include Justice Muneeb Akhtar, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi, Justice Yahya Afridi, and Justice Ayesha Malik.

The unsettling recurrence of such incidents mirrors the previous episode, with the letters containing a mysterious powder akin to ‘anthrax.’ With this latest incident, the tally of apex court judges targeted by such letters rises to ten.

Madrid to recognize state of Palestine before July, confirms Spanish foreign minister

Spain’s Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, has confirmed Madrid’s intention to recognize the State of Palestine before July, marking a significant shift in Spain’s diplomatic stance. Emphasizing the need for a genuine Palestinian state, Albares rejects perpetual refugee status for Palestinians, aligning Spain with principles of self-determination and sovereignty.

“We need a real Palestinian state,” Albares said at a meeting with journalists in Brussels. “The Palestinian people must not be condemned to forever be refugees.”

This change in position comes after Spain’s parliament passed a non-binding resolution supporting Palestinian statehood in 2014, with former Prime Ministers Mariano Rajoy and Pedro Sánchez advocating alignment with the European Union’s stance. The decision is attributed to civilian casualties from recent conflicts and the stalled peace negotiations, prompting Spain to take a more proactive approach to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has criticized Israeli military operations in Gaza, demanding explanations for civilian casualties, while expressing solidarity with both Palestinians and Israelis affected by the conflict. Sánchez’s suggestion that Spain may recognize Palestine before summer underscores the country’s commitment to international law and human rights principles.

Spain’s potential recognition of Palestine, along with other EU members expressing readiness to do so, reflects a growing global consensus towards Palestinian statehood. This move is viewed as a positive development for peace efforts in the region and highlights the importance of international solidarity in addressing conflicts and promoting lasting peace. Spain’s readiness to recognize Palestine signifies a departure from previous diplomatic approaches, signaling a more proactive stance on the Middle East peace process.

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has been elected as the new Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, succeeding Sirajul Haq, in a significant transition for the party’s leadership. The election, which saw the participation of approximately 45,000 party members from across the nation, recorded an impressive turnout with around 82 percent overall participation.

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, who previously served as the Karachi Ameer of the party since 2013, is poised to take the oath of office by April 7. He becomes the sixth individual to hold the top position in JIP. Rehman’s educational background includes a degree in civil engineering and a master’s in Islamic history. His political journey within the party dates back to 2000 when he became a member of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Rehman’s involvement in politics extends beyond his new role, having twice served as Nazim-e-Ala of the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT). Notably, he contested mayoral elections in Karachi previously, though he was defeated by Murtaza Wahab of PPP. However, in the 2024 General Elections, he secured a provincial assembly seat from PS-129 but opted to vacate it without taking the oath, claiming that an independent candidate supported by PTI had won.

Sirajul Haq’s resignation from the party’s top position on February 12, following the defeat in the general elections on February 8, paved the way for Rehman’s election. As Rehman assumes leadership, Jamaat-e-Islami looks ahead to a new chapter under his guidance.

Canadian authorities have intensified investigations surrounding the case of Hina Sani, a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) air hostess arrested under suspicion of illegal activity. Recent developments reveal a multifaceted narrative with implications reaching beyond Sani herself.

Following her arrest, ice retrieved from Sani’s joggers triggered a series of inquiries, suggesting potential involvement in illicit activities. While detained, Sani awaits a court appearance, with Canadian immigration officials preparing to present her before local authorities. Allegations have surfaced implicating two other PIA officials stationed at the Toronto Airport, suggesting a broader network of involvement.

Despite warnings from Canadian authorities prior to her arrest, Sani finds herself detained without bail, facing potential deportation back to Pakistan as a passenger, not as crew. Reports confirm her re-arrest and subsequent transfer to jail, although specific charges remain undisclosed.

The situation has garnered attention from Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), which has contacted PIA for further details, hinting at a potential wider investigation. Influential circles are reportedly exerting pressure on PIA’s administration to reinstate Sani, despite her suspension.

Internally, PIA has initiated an investigation through its Central Disciplinary Unit, focusing on a manager and flight scheduler potentially linked to Sani’s case. Allegations further suggest irregularities in flight assignments and staffing decisions, fueling speculation about systemic issues within the airline.

As the case unfolds amidst the Easter holiday weekend, Sani’s next court appearance has been delayed until Wednesday, adding to the complexity of the situation. The ongoing developments underscore a complex web of allegations, investigations, and potential wider implications for PIA and its personnel, raising concerns about the integrity of airline operations and regulatory compliance.

Upgrades Underway at Jinnah Stadium for FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has embarked on a crucial mission to enhance the infrastructure at Jinnah Stadium by installing state-of-the-art floodlights. This initiative gained momentum following Pakistan’s historic triumph against Cambodia in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Round 1, igniting hopes for an improved stadium experience.

With Saudi Arabia’s impending visit on June 6 for the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Round 2 Group G match, anticipation is at an all-time high. To meet the stringent requirements set by FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), approximately 225 floodlights are slated for installation.

A pivotal inspection by FIFA and AFC officials is scheduled for April 6, just ahead of the Saudi Arabia clash. The deadline to submit the venue for approval looms on April 7, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

In addition to floodlight upgrades, plans are underway to revamp the VIP area with the installation of new seats, potentially accommodating an additional 300 spectators. Deputy Director General of PSB has been tasked with overseeing floodlight inspection and preparations, ensuring adherence to FIFA standards, which mandate a minimum luminosity of 1800 lumens.

The initiative to install floodlights was spurred by a request from the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) Normalisation Committee President, who sought to bolster Pakistan’s bid for FIFA Qualifiers hosting rights. Previous delays in floodlight installation had put hosting rights for the Jordan match at risk earlier this year, highlighting the urgency of timely execution.

While progress has been witnessed in floodlight and seat installation, concerns linger over meeting deadlines. With preparations intensifying ahead of the crucial FIFA World Cup Qualifier match against Saudi Arabia, the spotlight is firmly on the PSB’s ability to deliver on its commitments and ensure the stadium upgrades are completed on time.
