Pakistani passport ranked 4th worst in the world

The Henley Passport Index has once again positioned the Pakistani passport as the fourth-worst globally, revealing no improvement over the past five years. The latest ranking places Pakistan at 101st out of 104 countries, with a score of 34 out of a possible 227 destinations.

The score signifies that ordinary Pakistani passport holders have visa-free access to only 34 destinations, based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). In contrast, top-ranking passports, such as those from France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Singapore, share the first spot with an impressive score of 194.

Afghanistan secures the unfortunate title of the world’s worst passport, allowing entry to only 28 destinations. Following closely are Syria and Iraq, positioned as the second and third worst, with access to 29 and 31 destinations, respectively.

Other South Asian countries outperform Pakistan in this aspect, with Bangladesh at 97 (42 destinations), Sri Lanka at 96 (45 destinations), and Nepal at 98 (40 destinations). India stands out in the region, securing the 80th spot with a score of 62.

Despite its ranking, the Pakistani passport still provides visa-free access to a limited number of destinations, including countries like Barbados, Maldives, Qatar, Sri Lanka, among others. The consistent placement highlights the challenges Pakistani passport holders face in terms of global travel compared to their international counterparts.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan resigns as senior judge of SC

Justice Ijazul Ahsan has tendered his resignation as a Senior Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, following Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi’s earlier resignation. Sources suggest that Justice Ahsan submitted his resignation to President Arif Alvi. As the third most senior judge, Justice Ahsan was in line to become the Chief Justice of Pakistan in October 2024.

His resignation comes amid controversy as he opposed proceedings against Justice Mazahir Ali Naqvi and chose not to attend the supreme judicial council meeting. Justice Naqvi, facing allegations of ‘misconduct,’ had resigned earlier, expressing gratitude for his service in his resignation letter.

President Arif Alvi accepted Justice Naqvi’s resignation, marking a significant development in the Pakistani judiciary. The circumstances surrounding the resignations and their impact on the Supreme Court’s composition raise questions about the future leadership of the judiciary in Pakistan. The dual resignations underscore a complex moment in the nation’s legal landscape, leaving observers to ponder the implications for the court’s direction and the succession of leadership within the judiciary.

Amazon, Microsoft, and Google Establish HQs Amidst Dubai Rivalry

Global technology behemoths like Microsoft Corp., Alphabet Inc.’s Google, and Amazon.com Inc. are among businesses attempting to increase their footprint in Saudi Arabia in response to pressure from the government, which has declared that it will no longer award contracts to businesses lacking a regional office there.

According to a government database, the three American companies have all been granted permission to open regional headquarters in Riyadh. The Saudi government set a deadline of January 1st, and those approvals were granted just in time.

In a strategic move to bolster its tech industry and attract global giants, Saudi Arabia is witnessing a significant shift as tech powerhouses Amazon, Microsoft, and Google announce the establishment of their headquarters in the kingdom. This development marks a deliberate effort by Saudi Arabia to challenge Dubai’s dominance as a regional tech hub and position itself as a formidable player in the tech sector.

The Silicon Valley Showdown in the Middle East

  1. Amazon’s Entry:
    • Amazon, the e-commerce behemoth, is gearing up to establish its headquarters in Saudi Arabia, reflecting the kingdom’s growing appeal as a lucrative market. This move aligns with Amazon’s expansion strategy, tapping into the Middle East’s thriving consumer base.
  2. Microsoft’s Commitment:
    • Microsoft’s decision to set up its headquarters in Saudi Arabia underscores the kingdom’s potential as a burgeoning tech hub. The move is expected to facilitate collaborations, foster innovation, and offer advanced technology solutions tailored to the region’s needs.
  3. Google’s Ambitious Move:
    • Google, known for its innovation and technological prowess, is venturing into Saudi Arabia to establish its headquarters, indicating the kingdom’s increasing significance in the tech landscape. The move is poised to bring forth new opportunities for tech advancements and digital transformation.

Saudi Arabia’s Strategy and Rivalry with Dubai

  • Economic Diversification Drive:
    • Saudi Arabia, under its Vision 2030 initiative, aims to diversify its economy, reducing dependence on oil revenues and embracing technology and innovation. Attracting tech giants aligns with this vision, fostering economic growth and job creation.
  • Dubai’s Dominance Challenge:
    • Historically, Dubai has been the primary tech hub in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia’s bid to entice major players like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google is a strategic move to challenge Dubai’s supremacy and position itself as a formidable tech destination.
  • Strategic Incentives and Initiatives:
    • Saudi Arabia is offering incentives such as tax breaks, investment-friendly policies, and infrastructure development to entice tech giants. These initiatives aim to create an ecosystem conducive to innovation and technological advancement.

Implications for the Middle East Tech Landscape

The establishment of Amazon, Microsoft, and Google headquarters in Saudi Arabia signals a pivotal shift in the regional tech dynamics. This move not only showcases the kingdom’s ambitions but also signifies the evolving tech landscape in the Middle East. The competition between Saudi Arabia and Dubai to attract global tech giants is expected to fuel innovation, drive economic growth, and redefine the region’s tech sector.

In December, the government declared that companies holding a particular regional headquarters license would be eligible for a 30-year tax break.

However, there are also many ambiguities surrounding the Saudi plan. According to several executives, it is not obvious which Saudi government entities are subject to procurement limitations or how the regulations relate to particular business categories. Another significant area of concern is how the regulations would impact businesses that have contracts with entities such as the kingdom’s formidable sovereign wealth fund.

Requests for comments were not answered by the Ministry of Investment. In December, the company reported that over 200 businesses had already been granted headquarters licenses. Several companies, including as Bechtel, PwC, and PepsiCo, have previously declared their intention to establish their regional headquarters in Riyadh.

If we look at the 2023 report:

There will be 8 billion people on the planet by 2023. Experts estimate that the population will increase by 2 billion people during the next 30 years. Meanwhile, women make up less than half of the population, according to the World Bank. The World Bank projects that there will be more than 9 billion people on the planet by 2040. Additionally, the gender ratio of women to men will keep falling.

If we go a little deeper into the numbers, we find that 49.58% of people on the planet were female and 50.42% of people were male in 2021. In terms of numbers, this translates to 3,904,727,342 women and 3,970,238,390 males. Put another way, there are 101 men for every 100 women in the world now.

Sindh Governor Offers a Unique Solution to Karachi’s Street Crime: Free Motorbikes and Phones for Victims

In a bold attempt to combat Karachi’s street crime, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has announced an unconventional initiative: offering free motorbikes and cellphones to those who have fallen prey to such incidents.

The Problem: Karachi, unfortunately, grapples with a significant street crime issue. Over 1,700 motorcycles were stolen in the city last year alone.

Tessori’s Solution: The Governor encourages victims to bring their original CNICs and FIRs to the Governor’s House. Upon verification, they will be provided with a brand-new motorbike and cell phone, empowering them to move around safely and stay connected.

Beyond Motorbikes: The Governor’s vision goes beyond immediate relief. He believes in a collective approach and emphasizes the importance of everyone contributing their share. He also highlighted efforts like issuing health insurance cards for up to Rs500,000 treatment and providing ration to 250,000 people.

Transparency and Action: Tessori asserts his commitment to serving the people without expecting anything in return. He pointed to initiatives like hosting iftars for 300,000 individuals at the Governor’s House and the upcoming launch of free IT courses as examples of his dedication to public welfare.

Reactions: While the initiative has sparked mixed reactions, some view it as a novel approach to address a complex issue. Others question its sustainability and potential for misuse.

The Takeaway: Regardless of opinions, Tessori’s initiative has undoubtedly sparked a conversation about tackling street crime and supporting victims in Karachi. Whether it proves effective or not remains to be seen, but the move highlights a willingness to think outside the box and address a pressing concern for the city’s residents.

Roti and Naan Prices Significantly Rise in Lahore

In Lahore, the prices of roti and naan have witnessed a substantial surge, causing concern among consumers. A naan that used to cost Rs. 25 is now being sold at Rs. 40, marking a significant Rs. 15 increase.

Simultaneously, the price of a simple roti has doubled, rising from Rs. 12 to Rs. 25, impacting the affordability of this staple food item. The price hikes are attributed to increased costs of essential ingredients such as flour, fine flour, and gas.

Reports suggest that the suspension of subsidized flour supply to utility stores has contributed to the overall rise in food prices. Across the board, all food and essential items have experienced a substantial increase, ranging from 30 to 45 percent.

Rising costs of chicken feed, coupled with the death of a significant number of chicks due to extreme cold weather, are anticipated to further elevate chicken and egg prices. Essential commodities like pulses, ghee, and oil have also witnessed significant price spikes, affecting household budgets.

Pakistan Requests $2 Billion Loan Extension from UAE

Pakistan has officially sought an extension for the maturity date of a $2 billion loan from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to sources from the Ministry of Finance. Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar personally wrote to the UAE President, formally addressing the request for a loan rollover.

Initially, the UAE deposited $3 billion in secure accounts with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). Pakistan is currently paying interest at rates of 3 percent and 6.5 percent on different portions of the deposit.

Ahmed Shehzad wants to open a cricket academy in this city

Ahmed Shehzad, absent from all formats of Pakistan cricket since October 2019, is embarking on a new venture by establishing a cricket academy in Balochistan. The move underscores Shehzad’s dedication to cricket development and his commitment to nurturing young talents in the province.

Although once a promising opening batter, his absence from the national team since 2019 and a recent snub in the 2024 PSL player draft led Shehzad to retire from the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Despite the setbacks, the 32-year-old cricketer’s recent participation in a training camp ahead of the T20I series against New Zealand has fueled speculation about a potential return to the national side. Establishing a cricket academy aligns with Shehzad’s renewed interest in contributing to the sport at the grassroots level, particularly in Balochistan.

Beyond his personal playing career, the initiative showcases Shehzad’s commitment to leaving a lasting impact on the cricketing landscape in the region, emphasizing the importance of fostering talent development and growth in Balochistan.

Grant Bradburn bids farewell to Pakistan Cricket

Grant Bradburn, who took the helm as the head coach of Pakistan’s men’s cricket team in May last year, bids farewell before completing his two-year tenure. His departure is attributed to significant management changes within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Following Najam Sethi, Zaka Ashraf assumed the role of PCB chairman on an interim basis, but he is no longer the chairman as per the contract terms. Despite this, Ashraf will continue overseeing duties, albeit without the authority to make top-level decisions.

In the midst of these changes, Wahab Riaz has been appointed as the interim chief selector, while Mohammad Hafeez will serve as the team’s director. Shan Masood will take on the role of Test captain, with Shaheen Afridi leading the limited-overs cricket team.

The PCB had previously announced in November 2023 that all coaches, including Bradburn, would continue their work at the National Cricket Academy, with new coaching staff set to be revealed for the upcoming series in Australia and New Zealand.

Having coached the side in the 2023 World Cup, Bradburn expressed his gratitude and pride in a Twitter post.

“Time to close the amazing chapter that has been Pakistan cricket. Three roles over five years, I am proud of what’s been achieved and grateful to have worked with so many outstanding players, coaches, and staff,” he wrote, concluding the chapter with heartfelt thanks (bohat bohat shukriya) and fond memories of his three different roles over the past five years.

Government to investigate 9 May violence

In response to the violent incidents involving Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters on 9 May, 2023, the federal government has established a cabinet committee dedicated to investigating the events. The caretaker federal law and justice minister have been appointed as the convener, with other members including ministers of interior, information, and human rights. There is a possibility of adding a new member to the committee to address any arising issues.

The committee is mandated to meticulously examine the events leading up to 9 May, aiming to identify the masterminds, planners, facilitators, and executors of the violence. The terms of reference (TORs) include analyzing the root causes, determining responsibility, and evaluating both immediate and long-term implications. Furthermore, the committee is tasked with suggesting preventive measures and recommending strengthening the legal regime to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

To ensure a comprehensive investigation, the Ministry of Interior will provide secretarial support to the committee. A strict timeline has been set, requiring the committee to submit its detailed report to the cabinet within fourteen days.

The violent clashes erupted nationwide after the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan on May 9, 2023, leading to protests in various cities as PTI workers expressed agitation over their chairman’s detention. In response, Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad summoned armed forces to maintain law and order.

The committee’s primary focus is to investigate and identify those responsible for the violence, placing particular emphasis on understanding the causes and implications of the events on May 9. The proactive stance of recommending preventive measures reflects the government’s commitment to avoiding future breaches of national security, highlighting the broader context of nationwide unrest sparked by Imran Khan’s arrest and subsequent protests.
