Israel bombs Gaza after UN warns territory ‘uninhabitable’

In a distressing escalation of the conflict, Israel conducted airstrikes in Gaza, intensifying the hostilities that have persisted for three months. The United Nations has issued a stark warning, declaring Gaza on the brink of becoming “uninhabitable” as civilians bear the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict.

Israeli strikes targeted Gaza’s southern city of Rafah, where many sought shelter amidst the escalating violence. UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths expressed concern, noting that much of Gaza is already reduced to rubble, and a deepening humanitarian crisis is threatening over 1.1 million children in the region, according to the UN children’s agency.

Israeli forces are engaged in fighting across all parts of the Gaza Strip, with a reported “very high state of readiness” near the Lebanon border, as stated by Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari. In a significant development, a top Hamas commander was killed in a strike in Beirut, although Israel has not officially claimed responsibility.

The conflict, triggered by a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, has resulted in a considerable number of casualties. Israeli strikes hit Khan Yunis, Rafah, and central Gaza, targeting over 100 sites within a 24-hour period. Gaza’s health ministry recorded 162 deaths during the same timeframe.

The situation is dire, with Palestinian militants killed in clashes, tunnels uncovered under the Blue Beach Hotel used by terrorists, and families arriving in Rafah facing shortages of water, electricity, and food. Renewed shelling and drone fire around Al-Amal hospital in Khan Yunis have been reported, resulting in the tragic death of seven displaced people, including a five-day-old baby.

As the conflict persists, a humanitarian catastrophe looms, with epidemics spreading, hospitals overwhelmed, and displaced people facing dire conditions. The Palestinian Red Crescent reports ongoing challenges and casualties in the conflict zone, painting a grim picture of the unfolding crisis.

Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan Faces Contempt Charges from Electoral Watchdog

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan is facing contempt charges from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), marking another legal challenge in the wake of his removal from office in April 2022. The 71-year-old ex-cricket star has been absent from public view since his three-year imprisonment in August, related to the unlawful sale of state gifts during his tenure from 2018 to 2022.

The ECP initiated contempt proceedings against Khan and other leaders of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Imran Khan’s lawyer, Naeem Haider Panjutha, alleges that the Election Commission indicted Khan in the absence of lawyers. Khan, known as the country’s most popular leader, vehemently denies all charges, attributing them to alleged persecution by the military to keep him out of elections—a claim that the military denies.

Recent legal setbacks include a high court rejecting Khan’s request to suspend his disqualification from contesting elections. These legal battles further contribute to the political turmoil surrounding Imran Khan since his ousting from the prime ministerial office, highlighting the complexities of his post-premiership challenges.

FBR exposes Rs 16 billion fraud

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has uncovered a massive financial scandal in Islamabad, exposing a Rs 16 billion fraud related to the illegal import of solar panels. A private company stands accused of involvement in illegal imports totaling Rs 1.62 billion, with an additional Rs 16 billion linked to illegal solar panel imports for 11 different companies.

The imported goods were intended for companies with a total financial position of less than Rs 4 million, rendering them ineligible for bank transactions for importing such items. In an attempt to evade detection, data for the 11 companies involved was systematically erased after suspicious imports.

This revelation follows a previous case that exposed over Rs 69.5 billion in over-invoicing related to solar panel imports between 2017 and 2022. The FBR report underscores a clear pattern of over-invoicing on 6,232 Goods Declarations from 63 importers, involving the transfer of Rs 72 billion from two private companies, with solar panels worth Rs 45 billion imported.

FBR Chairman briefed the Senate standing committee on finance about the extensive over-invoicing, highlighting that commercial banks violated financial monitoring unit rules in the transfer. Consequently, an FIR has been registered against those involved, underscoring the gravity of the financial malpractice.

Elections 2024: No more bat for PTI

In a significant development ahead of the Elections 2024, the Peshawar High Court (PHC) has lifted the stay order and reinstated the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to declare Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) intra-party polls null and void. The decision includes the removal of PTI’s election symbol, the ‘bat’.

On December 26, a single-member bench led by Justice Ejaz Khan delivered the verdict on a review plea filed by the ECP. Despite the PHC’s announcement, the decision has not been implemented yet, as emphasized by PTI’s advocates, Anwar and Barrister Gohar Khan, during the hearing.

Political parties express their support for the ECP’s stance in court, while PTI’s lawyer questions the ECP’s authority to challenge the high court’s ruling, prompting inquiries about filing a contempt case.

Justice Khan highlights PTI’s opportunity to file a contempt case and stresses the party’s desire for free and fair elections. The court reserves the verdict after hearing arguments from both sides.

The controversy began on December 2 when the ECP nullified PTI’s intra-party elections, citing non-compliance with the Elections Act 2017 and PTI’s constitution, subsequently declaring PTI ineligible for using the ‘bat’ symbol. PTI challenged the ECP’s decision in the Peshawar High Court, leading to this latest development.

The intra-party elections, electing Barrister Gohar Khan as PTI chairman, faced criticism from estranged founding member Akbar S. Babar, who alleged a selective process favoring lawyers over party workers.

Supreme Court declared me ‘Sadiq and Ameen’ – Declares Sheikh Rasheed

Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, former interior minister and chief of the Awami Muslim League (AML), is facing a setback as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) rejected his nomination papers for NA-56 and NA-57 in Rawalpindi for the upcoming 2024 general elections. Expressing frustration over not receiving a copy of the ECP’s decision, Rasheed asserts that the Supreme Court has previously declared him ‘Sadiq and Ameen’ (truthful and trustworthy).

The alleged reason for the rejection is an accusation that Rasheed did not pay rent for a rest house he resided in 12 years ago. Denying the claim vehemently, Rasheed challenges anyone to prove that he lived in such a rest house, offering to resign from politics if proven.

Despite this setback, Sheikh Rasheed remains determined to contest the elections and vows to move the Supreme Court to assert his rights. He emphasizes his commitment to the legal and constitutional process, expressing regret over what he perceives as a violation of the law to bring back a “corrupt person” to the country.

Announcing his intention to challenge the returning officer’s verdict in court, Rasheed is confident in the support of voters, claiming that victory is inevitable and there is no escape for the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). He believes success will be achieved through historical symbolism, referring to the ink pot with a pen.

Recently summoned to the commissioner’s office to address accusations related to the non-disclosure of a specific piece of land, Sheikh Rasheed stands firm in his commitment to the legal and constitutional process despite facing the rejection of his nomination papers.
