K-Electric Secures 20-Year License from NEPRA

In a significant development for the energy sector in Pakistan, K-Electric, one of the country’s leading power utility companies, has successfully obtained a 20-year license from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). This milestone marks a pivotal moment for both K-Electric and the nation, signaling a commitment to long-term stability and advancements in the provision of electricity.

KARACHI: As its six-month extension ended today, K-Electric, the only electric distribution firm in Karachi, made an important move by obtaining 20-year distribution supply licenses from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).

Prior to the liberalization of the power industry, the energy distribution firm had applied for non-exclusive distribution and supply licenses for the ensuing twenty years. The previous 20-year license held by K-electric expired in July 2023.

K-Electric has been a key player in the power distribution landscape in Pakistan, serving the sprawling metropolis of Karachi and its surrounding areas. The company’s efforts to enhance the reliability and efficiency of power supply have been evident, and the acquisition of a 20-year license from NEPRA solidifies its position as a crucial contributor to the nation’s energy infrastructure.

On May 26, 2023, Limited (KEL) filed an application to be granted a Supplier Licence (Supplier Licence) for the purpose of serving as Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) within its assigned service zone.

The statement said, “The authority has approved a new Distribution License to K-Electric in terms of Section-20 and 21 of the NEPRA Act to the extent of distribution/network business only, subsequent to the segregation of distribution and supply functions in the 2018 Amendment Act.”

As per the data furnished by KE, the regulatory body stated that the enterprise possesses 2,068 (public and dedicated) 11 KV feeders in total.

K-Electric’s acquisition of a 20-year license from NEPRA represents a significant stride towards a more stable, efficient, and technologically advanced power sector in Pakistan. This development not only benefits the company but also holds promise for economic growth, investor confidence, and improved living standards for the people of Karachi and its surrounding areas. As K-Electric embraces the responsibilities that come with this extended license, it paves the way for a brighter and more energized future for the nation.

What Matters: Where We Shouldn’t Spend Our Energy and Time

In the relentless pursuit of personal growth and motivation, it’s easy to find ourselves spread thin, chasing after every opportunity and self-improvement trend that comes our way. However, not all avenues are worth our precious time and energy. To truly thrive, it’s essential to identify and prioritize where we invest ourselves. This article explores areas where we should reconsider expending our resources, emphasizing the importance of mindful allocation for sustainable personal development.

  1. Comparing Ourselves to Others: One of the most counterproductive habits is constantly comparing ourselves to others. In the age of social media, it’s easy to fall into the trap of measuring our success and worth based on the curated lives of others. This not only drains our energy but also hinders genuine self-discovery and growth. Instead, focus on your own journey, set individualized goals, and measure success by personal benchmarks.
  2. Chasing Perfection: Perfection is an elusive and often unattainable goal. Spending excessive time and energy striving for perfection can lead to burnout and disappointment. Embrace the concept of progress over perfection. Understand that making mistakes is a natural part of growth, providing valuable lessons that contribute to personal development.
  3. Overcommitting: While ambition is commendable, overcommitting can lead to exhaustion and diminished overall effectiveness. Learn to say no to commitments that do not align with your priorities or values. Quality often surpasses quantity when it comes to personal growth, allowing you to invest more deeply in chosen pursuits.
  4. Endlessly Consuming Self-Help Content: The self-help industry is vast, offering a plethora of books, podcasts, and seminars. While some resources can be valuable, a constant influx of information without application can be counterproductive. Rather than endlessly consuming content, focus on implementing key takeaways into your daily life. Practical application fosters genuine growth.
  5. Rumination on Past Mistakes: Dwelling excessively on past mistakes can impede progress. While reflection is crucial for learning, ruminating can lead to self-doubt and stagnation. Acknowledge mistakes, extract lessons, and use them as stepping stones for growth. Redirect your energy towards present actions that align with your future goals.
  6. Pleasing Everyone: The desire to please everyone can be a draining endeavor. Not everyone will share your vision or support your journey, and that’s okay. Prioritize relationships that contribute positively to your growth and well-being. Authenticity and self-assertiveness often lead to more meaningful connections.
  7. Fear of Failure: Fear of failure can paralyze us, preventing the pursuit of new opportunities. Embrace failure as an inevitable part of the learning process. Each setback is a chance to refine your approach and move closer to your goals. Redirect the energy spent fearing failure into resilience and perseverance.

In the pursuit of motivation and personal growth, it’s imperative to be discerning about where we invest our time and energy. By avoiding the aforementioned pitfalls, we can create space for meaningful progress, resilience, and a more authentic and fulfilling journey. Remember, true growth is a marathon, not a sprint, and choosing wisely where to direct your efforts will make the journey all the more rewarding.

Pakistan FIFA World Cup Qualifier not to be played in Islamabad

The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has declared that the FIFA World Cup Qualifier Round 2 match against Jordan will now be held at a neutral venue instead of Islamabad’s Jinnah Stadium.

This decision stems from insufficient lighting conditions at the stadium, failing to meet FIFA standards despite collaborative efforts between PFF and the Pakistan Sports Board to enhance facilities since the last home game in November.

The current setup at Jinnah Stadium falls short of FIFA requirements, prompting the PFF to uphold the game’s integrity by seeking alternative options.

Where will FIFA World Cup Qualifier take place?

Facing a deadline of January 21 for venue submission, the PFF is committed to securing a suitable neutral venue and is in discussions with the Jordan Football Association for the home leg.

Challenges include inadequate lighting conditions for the March game, scheduled under lights during Ramadan. Earlier plans for light installation and seat additions by the Pakistan Sports Board were in progress, with completion expected by the end of February.

The match against Jordan would have marked Pakistan’s third appearance in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Round 2 Group stage.

Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab is Also the PCB Chairman

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has designated Mohsin Naqvi as the new Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), succeeding Zaka Ashraf, who recently resigned from the position.

Currently serving as the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi assumes the role after the approval of Zaka Ashraf’s resignation by the interim PM.

Zaka Ashraf stepped down from the PCB Management Committee chairman post after a seven-month tenure, citing working conditions as a key factor for his decision.

In his resignation, Ashraf relinquished his role as Chairman Management Committee and Member Board of Governor (BoG), expressing disappointment over the prevailing working conditions that hindered his ability to carry out his responsibilities effectively.

The PCB Management Committee, led by Zaka Ashraf, was formed in July 2023 for a four-month term under the prerogative of the caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar, who acts as the patron of the PCB.

Onion prices further hike in Pakistan

Onion prices in Pakistan have witnessed a sharp surge, reaching Rs. 320 per kg, according to the latest data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. The capital city, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi are grappling with soaring prices at Rs. 320 and Rs. 310 per kg, respectively.

Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore, and Faisalabad are also experiencing the brunt, with prices ranging from Rs. 220 to Rs. 270 per kg. Karachi and Peshawar report prices at Rs. 220 and Rs. 270 per kg, respectively, contributing to a national average of approximately Rs. 230 per kg.

The spike in onion prices is attributed to India’s ban on onion exports in early December, prompting increased exports from Pakistan and subsequently impacting local prices. Despite the government’s efforts, including an increase in the minimum export price (MEP) from $750 to $1,200 per tonne, local prices have not seen a significant decrease.

This surge in onion prices is affecting consumers across various cities in Pakistan, highlighting the challenges in stabilizing onion prices in the local market. The situation underscores the profound impact of global market dynamics on domestic commodity prices.

IMF Directs Pakistan on Fiscal Discipline: No Supplementary Grants Until New Government Formation

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) instructs Pakistan to refrain from approving supplementary grants until the post-election formation of a new government. In line with commitments under the Stand-By Agreement (SBA), the Finance Division issues directives to ministries, emphasizing the government’s pledge to avoid supplementary grants and adhere to approved fiscal levels in FY2023-24.

These commitments extend to refraining from introducing new preferential tax treatments, exemptions, and tax amnesties, along with a commitment to avoid subsidy or cross-subsidy schemes in FY24 and beyond. The Finance Division further instructs ministries to prevent proposals conflicting with these commitments from reaching competent forums.

The importance of these commitments is emphasized for achieving program targets and maintaining macroeconomic stability. Ministries are urged to disseminate IMF commitments to institutions under their control for compliance. The IMF’s directives underscore the significance of adherence to these commitments to uphold financial discipline and achieve macroeconomic stability.

Pakistan’s Foreign Exchange Reserves Dip to $13.15 Billion Amid Debt Repayments

According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) data, Pakistan’s liquid foreign exchange reserves have decreased to $13.1451 billion as of January 12. The SBP’s reserves witnessed a decline of $127 million to $8,027.4 million during the week ending on January 12, primarily attributed to debt repayments. The overall liquid foreign reserves, which include both SBP and commercial banks, now stand at $13,145.1 million, with SBP holding $8,027.4 million and commercial banks holding $5,117.7 million.

Comparing to the previous week’s data as of January 5, 2023, the total liquid foreign reserves were $13,256.6 million, with central bank reserves at $8,154.8 million and commercial banks holding $5,101.8 million. The recent decline in reserves reflects a reduction from the previous week’s total.

Despite the decrease in foreign exchange reserves, SBP reported an improvement in the current account balance for July to December 2023, with the current account deficit recorded at $83.1 million. This is a significant improvement from the $3.62 billion deficit recorded in the same period of the previous fiscal year (FY23). The recent positive trend in the current account balance indicates favorable economic developments for Pakistan.

Pakistan Issues Warning Over Iran’s Airstrikes

Iran’s recent airstrikes in Balochistan, Pakistan, targeting Jaish al-Adl, have sparked concerns about the potential escalation of a regional conflict. Tragically, the bombings resulted in casualties, with two children losing their lives, and three others sustaining injuries.

Pakistan swiftly condemned the incident, categorizing it as a blatant violation of sovereignty and issuing a stern warning to Iran regarding potential serious consequences. The timing of these attacks coincides with heightened interactions between Pakistani and Iranian officials, spanning both civilian and military spheres. Notably, Pakistani caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar had met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian just before the airstrikes.

In an effort to address the situation diplomatically, Pakistan’s interim foreign minister, Jalil Abbas Jilani, engaged in discussions with Iran’s special representative for Afghanistan affairs, focusing on enhanced coordination for regional stability. However, analysts expressed concerns that this incident may entangle Islamabad in a broader regional conflict, posing a serious threat to stability.

The timing, occurring just a month before national elections in Pakistan, introduces a political dimension to the situation, potentially influencing the electoral landscape. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes the violation of Pakistani sovereignty, demanding accountability for the air attacks. As the repercussions of these actions unfold, possibilities include increased bilateral engagement, heightened regional instability, and potential diplomatic fallout, shaping the complex dynamics in the aftermath of the strikes.

GPT-4-Turbo is gradually being made available to Copilot customers who have activated GPT-4. It offers a more recent knowledge cutoff, more processing power, and more memory.

What distinguishes GPT-4-Turbo?
The extensive language models that support both Microsoft’s and OpenAI’s AI services and products are being updated regularly. This covers improving and fine-tuning skills.

Compared to previous iterations, the most recent version of GPT-4, which is also its most sophisticated model, features an updated knowledge cutoff. It includes data until April 2023 and a significantly bigger 128k context window, which is the equivalent of 300 text pages in memory.

One year prior to ChatGPT’s introduction, in September 2021, the base GPT-4 model’s previous data cutoff was reached. Additionally, after reading through about 100 pages of text, it would forget what you had told it because of its 32,000 token context window.

Another noteworthy modification in GPT-4-Turbo is its enhanced picture analysis and reasoning skills.

It is therefore more adept at adhering to directions. According to a blog post by OpenAI, “GPT-4 Turbo performs better than our previous models on tasks that require careful following of instructions”.

Although GPT-4-Turbo isn’t officially available within Copilot, Microsoft did state in December that the AI tool will receive frequent updates.

Some users observed that the model named after the most recent OpenAI LLM was listed in the Copilot website’s source code.
