Pakistan’s interim Health Minister, Dr. Nadeem Jan, has announced plans to host a groundbreaking global health security summit in November of this year, marking a historic milestone for the South Asian nation. Dr. Jan revealed this ambitious initiative during an inter-ministerial health and population council meeting held in Islamabad.

The summit’s primary objective is to enable Pakistan to solidify a comprehensive strategic roadmap, equipping the nation to effectively combat health emergencies and epidemics. Dr. Jan emphasized that this significant event would gather leaders, foremost experts, and stakeholders from around the world to collaborate on bolstering Pakistan’s healthcare preparedness.

Pakistan, with a population exceeding 240 million, has grappled with major outbreaks of vector- and water-borne diseases, particularly in the aftermath of devastating floods that submerged a third of the country last year. More recently, regions like Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have faced outbreaks of diseases like dengue and chickenpox.

The nation’s already strained healthcare infrastructure, compounded by economic challenges, poses significant hurdles in responding effectively to such health crises. Pakistan remains one of only two countries where polio is still endemic, further underscoring the urgency of addressing its healthcare challenges.

Dr. Jan stressed the paramount importance of developing integrated strategies for disease eradication, placing the global summit’s agenda at the forefront of his government’s priorities. His ministry is fully committed to providing unwavering support in the fight against infectious diseases, ensuring the health and well-being of the Pakistani populace.

This global health security summit marks a pivotal step in Pakistan’s journey to fortify its healthcare system and respond proactively to health emergencies, ultimately safeguarding the health of its citizens and contributing to global health security.
