Ghulam Mustafa Bashir, Pakistani shooter, bowed out of contention in the first round at the 25m rapid pistol qualification in the Paris Olympics on Sunday. The world championships’ bronze medalist finished with a total score of 581 but was short of the required top six for the final medal round.

The performance by Bashir saw him score 292 points in the first stage, resulting in series scores of 98, 99, and 95 in the 8, 6, and 4-second series, respectively. He continued in the second stage with scores of 97, 97, and 95 points in the three series. Despite the hard struggling, the total score was not sufficient for him to secure a place among the top competitors.

This result culminates the Olympic journey of Bashir, which mirrors the problems that the Pakistani contingent faced at Paris. Of the seven athletes sent off to the Olympic Games from Pakistan, six of them have now closed their participation in search of at least one medal. All hopes are now pinned on the javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem, who is due to feature on August 6 with a final—the last rites—on August 8.
