The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) celebrated the historic T20 World Cup victory of Team India by announcing a monumental bonus for the team. As per the board’s secretary Jay Shah, a whopping INR 125 crore (approximately USD 15 million) is to be given amongst the winning squad.
This generous gesture comes in addition to the ICC’s record prize money for the tournament. India’s pulsating win over South Africa in the Barbados final ensured the champion’s purse of USD 2.45 million, the highest in any men’s T20 World Cup, went into VVS Laxman’s men’s kitty.
The BCCI reward, hence, goes to the most talented, determined, and sportsmanlike values developed by the Indian team throughout their race. It is an award that provides recognition for their efforts on the global platform.
“This bonus reflects our immense appreciation for the incredible achievement of the Team,” said BCCI secretary Jay Shah. “Their victory is not only helpful in uniting the country but has also, through this, cemented India as a powerhouse of T20 cricket.”
The ICC also reworked the share of prize money for the event of the 2024 World Cup, raising the total prize pool for this from USD 5.6 million given in 2022 to USD 11.25 million. All participating teams benefited from this augmentation: South Africa took home USD 1.28 million as the runners-up, while Afghanistan and England received USD 787,500 each as losing semi-finalists.
This was a massive increase in financial rewards for this version of the game, underlining the growing popularity and competitiveness of T20 cricket. It simply shows high regard for this format from the BCCI and ICC through these huge financial rewards.
