Pakistan Customs has initiated a nationwide crackdown on the illegal trade of cigarettes. In an effort to combat the smuggling of tobacco products, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) released a statement on Sunday announcing raids on numerous warehouses and stores across various cities. Substantial quantities of smuggled cigarettes have been confiscated over the past few days.
Following an increase in federal excise duty (FED) on cigarettes, reports surfaced indicating a significant surge in cigarette smuggling. As a result, Customs teams in different cities have been actively identifying warehouses used for storing illicit cigarettes, destined for distribution to retail shops.
Multiple raids have already been conducted within the past 48 hours, with additional operations planned in the coming days, as stated in the official announcement.
The seized contraband comprises a considerable amount of foreign brands, valued at an estimated Rs. 33.6 million, according to the FBR’s statement.
