Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have been placed on a six-day physical remand in a new Toshakhana case. This decision was announced by Judge Muhammad Ali Warraich of the accountability court following the pleas for their physical remand. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) will conduct investigations during their time in custody.
Due to security concerns, the Ministry of Law and Justice has approved a jail trial for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. This decision was ratified by the federal government under Section 16-B of the NAB Ordinance 1999. The couple was arrested in connection with a new NAB reference related to Toshakhana, just hours after being acquitted in the Iddat case. Their arrest was carried out by a NAB team led by Deputy Director Mohsin Haroon at Adiala Jail.
The initial statements of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were recorded by the NAB team. Bushra Bibi was re-arrested shortly after her release from Adiala Jail, following the necessary release procedures after the issuance of release orders. The Islamabad district and sessions court had accepted their appeals against their convictions in the Iddat case, where they had been sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Rs500,000 each in February for a fraudulent nikah.
Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi’s marriage took place in February 2018 in Lahore, attended by close relatives and friends, though Imran Khan’s sisters were notably absent. The nikah was performed by Mufti Saeed with former PTI leader Awn Chaudhary and former SAPM Zulfi Bukhari acting as witnesses. Bushra Bibi’s ex-husband, Khawar Maneka, claimed their marriage was illegal and against Sharia laws, accusing them of marrying within the three-month “iddat period” following Bushra Bibi’s divorce and alleging fornication.
This development is part of a broader series of legal challenges faced by Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, with their sentences in the Toshakhana cases now suspended and Imran Khan recently acquitted in the cipher case by the Islamabad High Court.
