In a heated exchange during the National Assembly session, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif ignited controversy by suggesting the exhumation and hanging of Field Marshall Ayub Khan’s body in accordance with Article 6 of the Constitution. Asif’s statement was a response to NA Opposition Leader Omar Ayub’s remarks. Asif cited the PTI-led previous government’s initiation of Article 6 proceedings against Ayub Khan as precedent.
Khawaja Asif emphasized the need for Article 6 proceedings against those who violated the Constitution, dissolved the assembly, and obstructed the passage of a no-confidence motion, alluding to events surrounding the removal of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The Defence Minister’s remarks sparked uproar among opposition members, prompting NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to call for order.
Earlier in the session, NA Opposition Leader Omar Ayub rejected allegations of his party’s involvement in the May 9 riots. He advocated for a judicial commission to investigate the incidents, which he claimed were orchestrated to target PTI founder Imran Khan.
Ayub also highlighted the extensive damages incurred by the country following the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007. He estimated losses of $2 billion and significant damage to trains, locomotives, and railway stations, particularly in Karachi, amounting to Rs80 to Rs90 billion over three to four days.
