The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has directed the closure of universities and colleges in several parts of Punjab due to the worsening smog crisis. Lahore and nearby cities like Gujranwala and Faisalabad are experiencing hazardous air quality levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) frequently exceeding safe limits. This alarming situation has prompted authorities to implement emergency measures to safeguard public health.

The smog, primarily caused by industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and crop residue burning, is creating severe respiratory and cardiac health concerns. Hospitals in Lahore report a surge in patients with breathing difficulties, especially among children and the elderly. In response, educational institutions are switching to online classes in affected areas to minimize students’ exposure to toxic air​

Additionally, measures such as traffic restrictions, increased street watering, and discussions around implementing artificial rain have been announced. The Punjab government is also exploring the distribution of electric bikes to students as a long-term solution to reduce vehicular pollution
