In a significant development for the energy sector in Pakistan, K-Electric, one of the country’s leading power utility companies, has successfully obtained a 20-year license from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). This milestone marks a pivotal moment for both K-Electric and the nation, signaling a commitment to long-term stability and advancements in the provision of electricity.
KARACHI: As its six-month extension ended today, K-Electric, the only electric distribution firm in Karachi, made an important move by obtaining 20-year distribution supply licenses from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
Prior to the liberalization of the power industry, the energy distribution firm had applied for non-exclusive distribution and supply licenses for the ensuing twenty years. The previous 20-year license held by K-electric expired in July 2023.
K-Electric has been a key player in the power distribution landscape in Pakistan, serving the sprawling metropolis of Karachi and its surrounding areas. The company’s efforts to enhance the reliability and efficiency of power supply have been evident, and the acquisition of a 20-year license from NEPRA solidifies its position as a crucial contributor to the nation’s energy infrastructure.
On May 26, 2023, Limited (KEL) filed an application to be granted a Supplier Licence (Supplier Licence) for the purpose of serving as Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) within its assigned service zone.
The statement said, “The authority has approved a new Distribution License to K-Electric in terms of Section-20 and 21 of the NEPRA Act to the extent of distribution/network business only, subsequent to the segregation of distribution and supply functions in the 2018 Amendment Act.”
As per the data furnished by KE, the regulatory body stated that the enterprise possesses 2,068 (public and dedicated) 11 KV feeders in total.
K-Electric’s acquisition of a 20-year license from NEPRA represents a significant stride towards a more stable, efficient, and technologically advanced power sector in Pakistan. This development not only benefits the company but also holds promise for economic growth, investor confidence, and improved living standards for the people of Karachi and its surrounding areas. As K-Electric embraces the responsibilities that come with this extended license, it paves the way for a brighter and more energized future for the nation.
