Peshawar Zalmi skipper, Babar Azam, has found himself in the spotlight after a video of him expressing visible fury towards Multan fans went viral. The incident occurred during a match against Multan Sultans, a game in which Azam’s team emerged victorious in. Sultans, who were previously undefeated with three wins out of three games, faced their first defeat against Babar’s team.
The controversy erupted when fans began chanting inappropriate slogans directed at Azam from the stands. This visibly angered the usually composed Azam, who was watching the match from the dugout with his Zalmi teammates. In response to the chants, Azam turned towards the crowd, appearing to mutter something while gesturing against fans furiously with a bottle in his hand.
While the original video lacked sound, edited versions circulating on social media included chants of ‘Zimbabar.’ However, supporters of Azam argue that there was no audible evidence in the original video to confirm what the Multan fans were actually saying. Given Azam’s reputation for maintaining composure on the field, many find it unlikely that he would react so strongly to mere taunts.
The match against Multan Sultans marked a significant victory for Peshawar Zalmi, as it was their first win of the season. Despite this, they find themselves second from the bottom in the league table, with just one win in three games, narrowly above Lahore Qalandars. In contrast, Multan Sultans have managed to retain their position despite the defeat.
As the incident gains traction on social media, Multan fans are being criticized for their behavior towards the star cricketer. The incident has sparked discussions about sportsmanship and the treatment of players by fans, with many calling for better behavior and respect towards athletes, regardless of the team they support. Peshawar Zalmi are set to face Lahore Qalandars on February 25th, where the focus will not only be on the game but also on the behavior of the fans in attendance.
