Essential Food Supplies in Kurram Face Exorbitant Prices Amid Crisis

Residents Struggle with Skyrocketing Costs of Basic Necessities

Soaring Food Prices in Kurram

The Kurram district is currently grappling with a severe crisis as essential food items become increasingly unaffordable. Staples such as wheat flour, rice, and cooking oil have seen unprecedented price hikes, placing immense strain on the local population.

Factors Contributing to the Crisis

Several elements have converged to exacerbate the situation:

  • Supply Chain Disruptions: Ongoing conflicts and infrastructural challenges have hindered the smooth distribution of goods.
  • Inflation: National economic instability has led to a devaluation of currency, increasing the cost of imports.
  • Black Market Activities: Exploitation by unscrupulous traders has resulted in hoarding and artificial scarcity, further driving up prices.

Impact on Residents

The exorbitant prices have forced many families to reduce their daily food intake, leading to malnutrition and associated health issues. The most vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly, are disproportionately affected.

Calls for Government Intervention

Local leaders and humanitarian organizations are urging the government to take immediate action to stabilize prices and ensure the availability of essential commodities. Proposed measures include subsidies, strict regulation of markets, and improved security to facilitate safe transportation of goods.

Saudi Arabia Braces for Hajj Amid Intensifying Heatwaves

Rising Temperatures During Hajj

The annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia has recently been marked by unprecedented heat, with temperatures soaring above 50°C (122°F). In 2024, over 1,300 pilgrims succumbed to heat-related illnesses, underscoring the severe challenges posed by climate change.

Health Risks for Pilgrims

Pilgrims, especially the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions, are at heightened risk of heatstroke, dehydration, and cardiovascular complications. The combination of high temperatures and humidity exacerbates these health concerns, making the pilgrimage increasingly perilous.

Saudi Arabia’s Mitigation Efforts

In response, Saudi authorities have implemented several measures to safeguard pilgrims:

  • Cooling Stations: Establishment of air-conditioned rest areas to provide relief from the heat.
  • Water Distribution: Increased availability of drinking water to prevent dehydration.
  • Medical Services: Enhanced medical facilities equipped to treat heat-related ailments.

Global Implications of Climate Change

The escalating temperatures during Hajj reflect a broader global trend of increasing heatwaves, particularly in the Middle East. Experts warn that without significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, such extreme weather events will become more frequent and severe, posing challenges not only to religious practices but also to public health and safety worldwide.

Salaried class becomes third-largest contributor to Pakistan’s revenue in FY 2023-24

As per the official documents, ARY News reported that the salaried class has become the third-largest contributor to the country’s revenue with a collection of Rs368 billion during the fiscal year 2023-24. This shows an upward surge of 39.3% or Rs103.74 billion from the previous year. The collection of taxes from salaried individuals in Pakistan now surpasses many sectors, entailing the steep role of salaried people in generating revenue for the country.

Despite such a remarkable contribution by the salaried class, taxes from contracts, bank interest, and securities continued to top the chart. Contracts alone raked in Rs496 billion with an increase of over Rs106 billion compared to last year. Taxes on bank interest and securities fetched Rs489 billion as it showed a 52.8% increase compared to a year ago.

Gains from other sectors were equally impressive. A tax on profit distribution rose 70% to Rs 145 billion. Similarly, collection through electricity bills increased by 30% and reached Rs 124 billion. Revenue through the sale and purchase of real estate stood at Rs 104 billion and Rs 95 billion, respectively.

Taxes collected from telephone bills increased by 14.3% and reached Rs100 billion, while the export sector contributed Rs94 billion, which is 27.2% higher. Other areas of increase included technical fees, commissions, cash withdrawals, and retailer purchases.

Addressing “Think Fest 2025” in Lahore, Federal Board of Revenue Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial said 60 percent of the population of the country falls below the threshold limit for paying income tax. However, he mentioned the presence of about 6.7 lakh people, including the ultra-rich, who must pay the taxes but get away with it.

Langrial also expressed sorrow over the unequal tax system in Pakistan, as some of the strongest critics were actually tax evaders themselves. He demanded accountability and reforms for equal contribution by all classes in paying taxes.

Ihsanullah comes out of PSL retirement, says it was only an emotional decision

Ihsanullah comes out of PSL retirement, says it was only an emotional decision

In a dramatic U-turn, Pakistani pacer Ihsanullah on Friday reneged on his decision to boycott the Pakistan Super League, merely hours after he announced his retirement from the tournament. Young fast bowler Ihsanullah remained unpicked in the PSL 10 player draft and disappointed, vowed never to play in the league again. Update: This news about Ihsanullah and the Pakistan Super League is developing.

Being upset, he had said this after he wasn’t picked by any franchise during the draft. However, the 22-year-old has now backtracked from the statement that he made in the heat of the moment in an interview with Geo Super.

Ihsanullah opens up on emotional PSL retirement

He said that the non-selection by any franchise, along with the pressure from outside, had compelled him to make such an emotionally-driven decision. This development about Ihsanullah and the Pakistan Super League has been learned from more than one source.

It’s just that you know that the franchises did not pick me and I was irked by masses and my family so that’s why made the decision emotionally,” Ihsanullah said, admitting that his emotions had gotten the better of him when he made the announcement.

He, though, made it amply clear that he does not intend to retire from the PSL and will work hard over the next few months. The youngster felt that his performances would yield selection by a franchise someday. This is a developing story about the youngster and the Pakistan Super League.

The Multan Sultan bowler, who had a promising PSL 8 with 22 wickets at an average of 15.77, also spoke about his bowling speed. He allayed the fears of his fans, stating that he is constantly bowling between 130-135 kmph, which, he says, is the equivalent of 140 kmph on television. He even claimed to have touched 142 kph in the recent game.

Ihsanullah assures his fans that he is focused on getting better and making a successful return in the PSL. He apologized to the franchises for making such a hasty decision, saying his anger got the better of him. He thanked the PCB for giving him opportunities at the domestic level as well.

Medicines Affected

The affected medicines include treatments for common ailments such as hypertension, diabetes, and bacterial infections. This sharp rise has raised concerns among healthcare professionals and the general public about the affordability and accessibility of crucial medications.

Factors Contributing to the Increase

Industry experts attribute this hike to several factors:

  • Currency Depreciation: The devaluation of the Pakistani rupee has increased import costs for raw materials.
  • Inflation: Overall economic inflation has escalated production and distribution expenses.
  • Regulatory Adjustments: Recent policy changes have allowed pharmaceutical companies to revise prices to maintain profitability.

Impact on Public Health

HBL PSL 2025 Squads Finalized After Player Draft

The final whistles of exciting picks at the HBL PSL 2025 Player Draft mean the stage is all set for a riveting competition. The franchises went into overdrive, securing their teams with an eye on proven international stars, coupled with highly promising local players. For those fans who might have been eager to find out about the final compositions, this means the PSL 2025 squads are finalized, promising a very competitive season.

The Lahore Qalandars made a statement as they picked New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell in the Platinum round as their first pick to give their batting a serious boost. The PSL 2025 squads are shaping up to be some of the most competitive yet, with each team making strategic picks. Not to be left behind, the Karachi Kings chose the explosive left-handed batter David Warner as the first pick to add serious firepower to their batting lineup. Both Mitchell and Warner will be making their much-talked-about PSL debuts.

There were some interesting strategic moves in the draft, too. Peshawar Zalmi used the Right to Match option to retain the familiar face of Tom Kohler-Cadmore in their lineup. Quetta Gladiators, having lost Kohler-Cadmore, picked up New Zealand’s Mark Chapman, adding more international experience to the squad. During the Platinum round of the draft, Michael Bracewell joined Multan Sultans and Matthew Short joined Islamabad United, further enhancing the quality of the PSL 2025 squads.

The second Platinum round was not any less action-packed. Quetta Gladiators used their Wild Card pick in the signing of all-rounder Faheem Ashraf, while also picking up the explosive Kiwi opener Finn Allen. Karachi Kings, on the other hand, worked on the bowling attack with the selection of Adam Milne and the use of a Wild Card for Mohammad Abbas Afridi, the leading wicket-taker of PSL 2023. This move might add some serious bite to their pace department.

Teams further refined their squads in the Diamond, Gold, and Silver rounds. The top picks included the signings of Corbin Bosch to Peshawar Zalmi, Jason Holder to Islamabad United, and Kusal Perera to Lahore Qalandars. This really deepened that depth with a bit of experience for their respective teams. For now, PSL 2025 rosters are complete and all geared up for a fight on the field.

But still, more was in store with the Supplementary rounds. Karachi Kings roped in Kane Williamson, strengthening their overseas contingent further while some of the notable supplementary picks included Johnson Charles, going to Multan Sultans, Tom Curran, going to Lahore Qalandars, Kusal Mendis going to Quetta Gladiators and Alzarri Joseph was roped in by Peshawar Zalmi. Qalandars picked Sam Billings and used Right to Match against Islamabad United, who then picked Rassie van der Dussen. Quetta Gladiators have picked Shoaib Malik as he will feature in his tenth consecutive PSL edition.

Emerging rounds brought out the nurturing of young talent: Hasan Nawaz for Quetta Gladiators and Maaz Sadaqat for Peshawar Zalmi, who will have a great opportunity to show their mettle on the big stage. The final squads of PSL 2025 reflect that the league is gaining more popularity and attracting the best available talent in the world.

Most Grooming Gang Offences Carried Out by White Men, Not Pakistanis: UK Police Chiefs

Breaking Stereotypes with Facts

Recent data released by UK police chiefs challenges the widespread stereotype linking grooming gangs predominantly to men of Pakistani heritage. The report highlights that most grooming gang offences in the UK are committed by white men, not Pakistanis.

Key Insights from the Report

  • Ethnicity Breakdown: Approximately 85% of grooming gang offenders are white men, whereas individuals of Pakistani descent account for only 7% of such crimes.
  • Data Challenges: Officials note that some cases lack detailed ethnicity information, but the available statistics provide a reliable overview.

Tackling Misconceptions

The findings emphasize the need to address racial and ethnic biases often fueled by media narratives. These stereotypes have unfairly targeted communities of Pakistani and South Asian descent, leading to stigmatization and public mistrust.

Police Chiefs’ Stance

Senior officers stressed the importance of relying on evidence-based approaches to tackle child sexual exploitation. They condemned the racialization of such crimes, urging policymakers and media outlets to focus on the victims’ welfare rather than perpetuating divisive narratives.

Implications for Policy and Public Perception

  • Better Resource Allocation: The report calls for shifting resources toward broader prevention measures rather than focusing on specific ethnic groups.
  • Combatting Racism: A fact-based narrative helps reduce racial profiling and promotes social cohesion.

This data-driven approach highlights the need for collective efforts to address grooming gang crimes without racial bias, ensuring justice and support for victims across the UK.

Gov Sindh Calls for Karachi-Issued Licenses for Heavy Vehicles

Revised Licensing Policy

The Sindh government has proposed a new policy requiring heavy vehicle drivers operating within the province to obtain Karachi-issued licenses. This initiative aims to enhance road safety and streamline regulatory oversight.

Reasons for the Proposal

  • Accident Prevention: A significant number of road accidents in Karachi involve heavy vehicles driven by untrained or unlicensed operators.
  • Standardized Training: Local licenses ensure drivers are trained to meet provincial safety standards.

Implementation Plan

  • License Conversion: Existing heavy vehicle operators will be required to convert their current licenses to Karachi-issued ones within a specified timeframe.
  • Penalties for Non-Compliance: Stricter penalties will be introduced for drivers failing to adhere to the new rules.

Public Reaction

While many applaud the focus on road safety, critics argue that the policy may burden drivers who already face economic hardships. The government plans to address these concerns by offering subsidized training programs.
