Former Pakistan PM and Foreign Minister Sentenced to 10 Years in “Cipher Case”

All You Need to Know About Toshakhana Case

In a significant development on January 31, 2024, former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have been handed a 14-year jail sentence by an accountability court in Rawalpindi. The verdict, related to the illegal sale of state gifts, not only brings severe legal consequences for the couple but also renders them ineligible to contest public office for a decade. Alongside the hefty prison term, a substantial fine of 787 million rupees ($2.8 million) has been imposed on each of them.

The case centers around the alleged illegal sale of gifts received by Imran Khan during his premiership from 2018 to 2022. These gifts, typically stored in Toshakhana since its establishment in 1974, include a variety of valuables such as bulletproof cars, gold-plated souvenirs, paintings, watches, ornaments, rugs, and swords. While government officials are permitted to retain low-worth gifts, extravagant items require payment of a reduced fee.

The accusations suggest that Imran Khan, during his tenure, purchased these gifts at lower rates and subsequently sold them for significant profits. The total worth of misused gifts is reported to be more than Rs140 million ($635,000), with items like Rolex and a “Master Graff limited edition” wristwatch valued at 85 million Pakistani rupees among them.

The controversy emerged when National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf forwarded a reference to the Election Commission, leading to an investigation. In October 2022, the Election Commission declared Imran Khan guilty of corrupt practices, asserting that he had made false statements and incorrect declarations about the gifts, disqualifying him under Article 63(1)(p) of the Constitution.

The legal proceedings saw various twists and turns, including the trial court indicting Imran Khan on May 10, rejecting his plea to declare the case inadmissible. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) overturned the trial court’s ruling on July 4, directing a rehearing within seven days. On July 8, 2023, Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Dilawar declared the Toshakhana case against Khan as maintainable.

Amidst trial proceedings, Imran Khan’s legal team accused the presiding judge of bias, leading to a request for the case’s transfer. However, the trial court rejected the list of witnesses presented by PTI Chairman on August 2, citing a failure to prove their relevance. Chief Justice of the IHC, Farooq, referred the matter back to the trial court on August 4, directing a re-examination of jurisdiction and procedural lapses.

The trial court eventually found Imran Khan guilty of misdeclaration of state gifts on August 5. In August 2023, the IHC announced a short verdict, directing authorities to release Imran Khan on bail, contingent on the submission of a surety bond of Rs100,000, earlier instructed in 2023. This landmark case, with its intricate legal maneuvers, underscores the legal ramifications for a former head of state and adds another layer to the political landscape in Pakistan.

All You Need to Know About the Cipher Case

All You Need to Know About the Cipher Case

In a shocking turn of events, former Prime Minister Imran Khan and ex-Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi have been sentenced to 10 years in jail in what is now widely known as the cipher case. This high-profile case has been a focal point of controversy, stemming from allegations of mishandling a diplomatic document that purportedly contained a threat from the United States.

The saga began in March 2022 when Imran Khan, during a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) rally, brandished a letter claiming foreign interference aimed at toppling his government. This set off a chain of events, including a no-confidence motion gaining momentum amidst accusations of foreign meddling.

Despite PTI’s claims of an international conspiracy, Imran was successfully ousted through a no-confidence vote in April 2022. The origins of the scandal trace back to a farewell lunch in March 2022 attended by US officials, including Donald Lu and Asad Majeed Khan. Leaked audios in September 2022 revealed Imran instructing his secretary to emphasize the threat without explicitly naming any country.

The Intercept later published the alleged text of the diplomatic cipher, exposing US objections to Pakistan’s stance on the Ukraine war. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) registered an FIR against Imran and Qureshi under the Official Secrets Act in August 2023.

A special court was established for in-camera proceedings, but the Islamabad High Court declared the initial proceedings illegal in November. The case resumed in December after rectifying the legal errors. Despite the Supreme Court approving post-arrest bail for Imran and Qureshi in December, citing a lack of incriminating material, they remained incarcerated due to other cases.

A stay order on in-camera proceedings, issued until January 11, was withdrawn, allowing fresh witness statements. Key figures, including former principal secretary Azam Khan and ex-foreign secretary Sohail Mehmood, recorded statements in January. During the trial, the special court faced challenges, including the appointment of new defense counsel due to the absence of the defendants’ lawyers.

Imran, in particular, showed reluctance to appear before the judge, while Qureshi appeared in court a day before the 13-hour-long cross-examination of all 25 prosecution witnesses concluded. The defense’s alleged tactics to delay the trial prompted concerns from the FIA prosecutor.

The special court, despite PTI leaders expressing a lack of confidence in Judge Zulqarnain, dismissed the petition. Imran and Qureshi were handed a questionnaire under Section 342 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, with Imran claiming ignorance of the cipher’s whereabouts during his recorded statement.

In a shocking culmination, Judge Zulqarnain announced a 10-year sentence for both Imran and Qureshi, just nine days before the upcoming general elections. Qureshi protested that his statement was not recorded, and in response, PTI decided to challenge the verdict in the Islamabad High Court.

The case, entangled with allegations of communicating classified information under the Official Secrets Act, marks a historic moment as Imran Khan becomes the first prime minister in Pakistan’s history to be removed through a no-confidence vote. The underlying US objection in the diplomatic cipher concerning Pakistan’s neutral stance on the Ukraine crisis forms the basis of Imran’s persistent claims of a conspiracy against his government.

China Overtakes Japan as World’s Top Vehicle Exporter, Fueled by EV Boom

China’s roaring auto industry has roared past Japan, claiming the title of the world’s biggest vehicle exporter in 2023. This historic shift marks a significant victory for China’s electric vehicle (EV) focus while leaving Japan’s traditional hybrid approach in the dust.

Key Takeaways:

  • China exported 4.91 million vehicles in 2023, compared to Japan’s 4.42 million.
  • China’s EV dominance is undeniable, with one in three exported vehicles being fully electric.
  • Japanese automakers like Toyota still focus on hybrids, with only 1.7% of their domestic sales being EVs.
  • Toyota aims to ramp up EV production, targeting 1.5 million units by 2026 and 3.5 million by 2030.
  • China’s EV success has drawn scrutiny, with the EU investigating potential anti-competitive practices.

China’s electric surge is fueled by heavy government support and a booming domestic market. Meanwhile, Japan’s hybrid strategy, while pioneering, hasn’t kept pace with the EV revolution. Yet, Japanese giants like Toyota are betting on solid-state batteries to regain ground in the future.

This changing landscape presents both challenges and opportunities for the global auto industry. As China asserts its dominance in EVs, other players must adapt and innovate to stay ahead in the race for clean mobility.

This is just the beginning of a thrilling new chapter in the automotive story. Stay tuned for more updates on how this electric revolution unfolds!

Former Pakistan PM and Foreign Minister Sentenced to 10 Years in “Cipher Case”

In a swift, surprising move, a special court in Karachi sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to 10 years in prison each on Tuesday. The conviction stems from the controversial “Cipher Case,” involving allegations of mishandling classified diplomatic documents.

The court, established under the Official Secrets Act, announced the verdict after a marathon hearing that saw the defense accused of delaying tactics. Notably, just last Friday, the prosecution requested the court to limit the defense’s cross-examination, citing deliberate attempts to prolong the trial.

What is the Cipher Case?

The saga began in August 2023 with the registration of an FIR (First Information Report) under the Official Secrets Act. The report, filed by the Home Secretary, accused Khan and Qureshi of mishandling sensitive diplomatic documents related to foreign relations. While details remain under wraps due to the nature of the case, the report also mentioned the involvement of other former officials, including Azam Khan and Asad Umar.

The court’s swift decision and the potential penalties for Umar and Khan have sent shockwaves through Pakistani politics. Whether this marks the end of the case or just the beginning of a lengthy legal battle remains to be seen. The coming days and weeks will likely see further developments in this high-profile saga.

Punjab Police Accused of Sexually Harassing Foreign Tourists

A trio of foreign tourists—Alex Sidney from Italy, Charlie West from the UK, and Motahhareh Abbasi from Iran—have reported serious assault and sexual harassment by Punjab police during their cycling journey from Sadiqabad towards Lahore on January 25.

Despite having a police escort assigned for their security, the cyclists claim they were assaulted by ASI Liaqat, who allegedly attempted to snatch a camera and grabbed one of the cyclists by the hair. A video capturing one of the assaults has surfaced, revealing the alleged misconduct.

Alex reported that the police instructed the driver to run over Motahhareh when she tried to block the vehicle’s path. The tourists faced multiple incidents of assault and harassment by Punjab police, including being hit by police vehicles and motorcycles, with the police claiming they were going the wrong way.

Alex added,

“We entered Punjab on Jan 25 and started having assaults and harassment from Jan 26. In earlier assaults, we were hit by police vehicles and motorcycles as they continued telling us that we were going the wrong way. We told them that we were going to a hotel on the national highway. They would try to knock us down.”

The tourists attempted to register a complaint at Ahmedpur Lamma Police Station, but the desk officer refused, suggesting seeking help through social media. Motahhareh has also alleged serious sexual harassment by Pakistani policemen, stating that they asked for her WhatsApp number and sent inappropriate messages, with the situation worsening in Punjab.

She added,

“Many times, they asked me for my WhatsApp number and kept on insisting. When I asked them the reason, they would start insulting me. At the start, I gave my phone number to some of them and they started asking for pictures and sending creepy messages. For the last one month, I have been receiving creepy messages from Pakistani policemen.”

Iran Extends Gas Pipeline Project Deadline with Pakistan Amidst Heavy Warning

Iran has granted Pakistan a 180-day extension for the gas pipeline project, pushing the deadline to September 2024.

The extension comes with a stern warning from Tehran, indicating the possibility of seeking an $18 billion penalty through International Arbitration in Paris if the matter proceeds to that stage.

In an effort to find an amicable solution, Iran has proposed sending legal and technical teams to collaborate with Pakistan before the extended deadline.

The teams, comprising professionals in international relations, legislation, legal structure, and engineering, are set to visit Pakistan in February 2024. Both nations aim to ensure the completion of the gas pipeline project without resorting to arbitration.

The collaborative efforts signal a diplomatic approach to resolving the long-standing issue that has faced hurdles, with Pakistan attributing delays to US sanctions on Iran, a claim Tehran disputes, asserting the unjustifiability of the restrictions.

Instagram Tests ‘Flipside’: A New Feature for Private Posts

Instagram is currently testing a new feature called “Flipside,” signaling a potential shift in how users share content on the platform. In this experimental phase with a select group of users, Flipside enables individuals to create private posts visible exclusively to chosen users or close friends. Although the official launch remains uncertain, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri is closely monitoring user responses.

Flipside provides users with the ability to curate a separate space for private posts, allowing them control over who can view this content. This feature is particularly suited for sharing more personal or private moments exclusively with close friends and family.

Users can use Flipside on their primary accounts, resembling the concept of a “finsta” (fake Insta), to share pictures and videos visible only to selected users. Instagram is contemplating additional customization options for Flipside, potentially allowing users to configure a custom profile picture, name, and bio for the separate profile, akin to a separate account experience.

Currently accessible to a limited user group, Instagram plans to gradually roll out the Flipside feature to all users in the coming weeks. This experimentation aligns with Instagram’s commitment to adapting and enhancing user experience, catering to evolving preferences and needs within the dynamic social media landscape.

Video goes viral as Ayushmann Khurrana sings ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ – But what is the truth?

A recent surge in the circulation of a video featuring Ayushmann Khurrana singing ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ has triggered online criticism, with allegations of insensitivity during times of conflict. The controversy revolves around a misleading clip that lacks crucial context and is being propagated by a user on X, who has a history of spreading disinformation.

The user, known for previous instances of misinformation, accused Khurrana of singing the song during a period of alleged harm caused by Pakistanis to Indian soldiers and citizens, attempting to link it to the actor’s sentiments about the Ram Mandir. However, a thorough investigation reveals a different story.

What is the truth?

The clipped video dates back to 2017 when Ayushmann Khurrana performed at a concert in Dubai, paying tribute to various regions in India and Asian countries. The complete video narrative, available on an unverified YouTube channel, shows Khurrana acknowledging people from different Indian states before singing ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ as a tribute to his Pakistani friends. The actor then went on to perform ‘Chak De India’ with his brother and also sang for various Asian nations.

Verification through multiple sources, including a Gulf News report and Khurrana’s official social media handle, confirms the authenticity of the video and its context.

The motive behind the misleading claims appears to be a deliberate omission of the broader context of the performance. Critics fail to acknowledge that Ayushmann Khurrana also sang ‘Chak De India’ during the same event, undermining any insinuations of insensitivity.

Furthermore, recent participation by the actor in the inauguration ceremony of the Ram Mandir on January 22 refutes claims of insensitivity and emphasizes the importance of considering the full picture before passing judgment. In conclusion, the allegations against Ayushmann Khurrana lack merit, and the actor’s actions and the video in question are taken out of context to create unwarranted controversy.

PTI’s websites blocked ahead of elections

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) found itself in the midst of a digital storm on Friday as it accused federal authorities of blocking its websites within Pakistan. With the iconic ‘bat’ symbol denied for the upcoming polls, PTI strategically positioned its leaders as independent candidates, adopting various electoral symbols.

To counter potential voter confusion, the party introduced an online portal on insaf.pk and a backup site, pticandidates.com. Furthermore, PTI allowed voters to message Imran Khan’s Facebook account for information about their supported candidates.

However, accessing PTI’s websites proved challenging for the users on Friday, except when using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). PTI’s official account took to social media, tagging the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), interim information minister Murtaza Solangi, and interim IT minister Umar Saif, seeking an explanation for the alleged website blockage. The party questioned the purpose behind the blockage, especially when symbol information was still accessible through Imran Khan’s Facebook page.

Jibran Ilyas from PTI’s social media team directly addressed Minister Umar Saif on Twitter, demanding an explanation. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has yet to respond to Dawn.com’s request for comment on the alleged blockage.

This controversy follows a recent incident involving a fake web portal mimicking PTI’s platform, disseminating incorrect information about PTI-backed candidates. Additionally, multiple countrywide internet outages in recent weeks, coinciding with PTI’s online events, have raised eyebrows.

The interim government, led by Murtaza Solangi, attributed these internet disruptions to “technical” issues and ongoing system installations. PTA Director General Ahmed Shamim Pirzada echoed these sentiments, citing “technical glitches” and system upgrades while cautioning of potential disruptions for the next two to three months.

As Pakistan gears up for elections, PTI’s accusations bring to light concerns about digital interference and accessibility, amplifying the broader discourse surrounding internet disruptions during pivotal political events in the country. Calls for transparency and a thorough investigation into the alleged website blockage persist, shaping the unfolding narrative.

Fly Jinnah: First Pakistani airline to operate during fog

Established in November 2022, Fly Jinnah has swiftly risen to prominence in Pakistan’s aviation sector. The airline recently achieved a significant milestone by being granted CAT III certification by Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for approaches, arrivals, and departures.

Notably, Fly Jinnah stands out as the sole domestic carrier with CAT III status across its entire fleet and for its pilots, enhancing its operational capabilities in extremely low visibility conditions, particularly during fog. The CAT III certification in the Instrument Landing System (ILS) holds great significance, supporting landing operations in challenging weather conditions.

Fly Jinnah to extend its horizons

With federal cabinet approval for international operations, Fly Jinnah is set to broaden its horizons, connecting Pakistan to destinations in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iraq, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkiye, and the UAE.

This move is anticipated to not only improve navigation and operational efficiency during adverse weather conditions between major cities in Pakistan but also positions Fly Jinnah as a key player in both domestic and international aviation markets.

The airline’s remarkable achievements also include being recognized by the CAA as the top domestic airline for flight punctuality, boasting an impressive on-time departure rate of 87.93%, surpassing competitors like Air Sial, Air Blue, and Serene Airlines. Fly Jinnah’s strong operational performance underscores its growing influence in the aviation industry.

The student, allegedly linked to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), was chased on a scooty and eventually caught by the police. The video has triggered widespread condemnation from netizens and civil society, with the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samith leader expressing deep concern and demanding an unconditional apology from Telangana Police for their unacceptable behavior.

This incident has brought attention to the challenges surrounding student protests and police response in India, sparking discussions on social media platforms about the use of force by law enforcement.

Civil society is calling for accountability and a thorough investigation into the actions of the involved police officers, highlighting broader concerns about freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly.
