Dangerous Levels of Lead Found in Over 40% of Oil-Based Paints Sold in Pakistan

Dangerous Levels of Lead Found in Over 40% of Oil-Based Paints Sold in Pakistan
Image: Pepperfry

A recent study by local and international researchers revealed that over 40% of oil-based paints being sold in Pakistan contain “dangerous and illegally high levels” of lead. This poses a severe threat to children’s health, with irreversible damage to their brain development, short stature, and anemia.

As part of the study, researchers from the Aga Khan University (AKU) and the Lead Exposure Elimination Project (LEEP) examined 60 residential-use paints from 21 brands for sale in Karachi. Results indicated that almost half of the paints tested exceeded Pakistan’s statutory limit of 100 parts per million and the World Health Organization’s recommendations, with some products containing up to 1000 times the permitted amount.

Lead exposure from paint and other sources impacts an estimated 47 million young lives in Pakistan, with the country losing approximately $38 billion in lost wages annually. Even modest exposure to lead can lead to decreased IQ, lower educational attainment, lower future incomes, and increased aggressive behavior in children.

The Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) has called on paint production companies to eliminate lead from their products as soon as possible. In 2017, the PSQCA imposed a mandatory standard that limits the amount of lead in paints to 100 parts per million.

Yellow and red paints were found to be particularly dangerous. Safe replacement pigments are readily available, and several nations have already effectively eliminated lead paint. Some Pakistani companies have also already eliminated lead compounds, based on the study’s findings.

Govt Approves 113% Increase in Natural Gas Prices for IMF Program

The government increased price of natural gas by more than double on Monday to revive International Monetary Fund (IMF) Program. The 113% increase in price is done to recover Rs 310 billion from consumers in the next six months. After the recent hike, consumers are now burdened with Rs 736 billion in the name of taxes and energy cost.

The Pakistani government is facing a tough time as IMF has come up with strict conditions to grant loan this time. In order to fulfill the demands, government is implementing one after another condition. However, the huge size of cabinet has not been reduced yet.

The Economic Coordination Committee of Cabinet approved 113% increased prices for domestic consumers with four cubic meter or more gas consumption.

The price increase for domestic consumers is between 8.5% to 113% besides “optimising” slab benefits previously.

According to the details, the gas prices for the commercial, bulk, fertilizer plants, power producers, cement, exporters, general industry and CNG stations are increased from 10.4% to 105%.

The objective of the recent increase is to stop both the gas supplying companies from bankruptcy. Both the companies have sustained Rs577 billion revenue shortfall since 2013.

According to the Ministry of Finance.“The ECC after a detailed discussion approved a gas price revision proposal for domestic, commercial and power sectors for six months – January to June 2023.”

Apple Unveils the iPhone 15’s Look

Apple Unveils the iPhone 15's Look

According to iPhone 15 reports, Apple will redesign its forthcoming smartphone lineup significantly. ShrimpApplePro, a reputable leaker, has just disclosed information about a conceivably beautiful new display.

According to a source in the industry, the iPhone 15 Pro Max might include a cutting-edge Samsung display with an astounding 2,500 nits of brightness. Anything else in the market, even Samsung’s own recently unveiled Galaxy S23 series, would pale in comparison to this.

Apple rumors indicate that the price of the iPhone 15 Pro model is rising, and a recent leak that dissects iPhone 14 sales information may help to clarify this.

Apple Unveils the iPhone 15's Look

I anticipate that the 2,500 nits level will once again be set aside for a maximum outdoor brightness mode on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Despite this, the panel’s capabilities are still at least 25% greater than anything we have seen on the market for any type of consumer product.

In contrast, the maximum brightness of the Galaxy S23 variants is 1,750 nits. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are limited to 1,000 nits indoors and 1,600 nits for HDR video but can reach 2,000 nits in a constrained outdoor mode. Even the QD-OLED panels in Samsung’s 2023 flagship televisions have a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits, which is already a twofold improvement over what the panels were capable of last year.

Pakistan’s economy has been in a state of decline for quite some time now and is at the brink of default. The devaluation of the rupee against the US dollar has added to the country’s economic woes. The situation is reminiscent of Sri Lanka’s recent economic crisis and serves as a warning for Pakistan to take immediate measures to prevent further deterioration. In this article, we will look at some tips and tricks that Pakistan can implement to get rid of its poor economy.

Improve Tax Collection and Reduce Corruption: One of the major reasons for Pakistan’s economic instability is the low tax collection and rampant corruption in the country. To improve its financial situation, Pakistan needs to increase tax collection and reduce corruption. This can be achieved by improving tax administration and increasing transparency in government operations. The government should also take steps to penalize tax evaders and corrupt officials. By doing so, the country can increase its revenue and reduce the budget deficit.

Focus on Agriculture and Small Businesses: Agriculture and small businesses are the backbone of Pakistan’s economy. The government should provide incentives and support to farmers and small business owners to encourage growth in these sectors. This can include providing low-interest loans, tax breaks, and training programs. By doing so, the country can create job opportunities and increase economic growth.

Diversify Exports: Pakistan’s economy is heavily dependent on exports, mainly textiles. To reduce its dependence on a single sector, the country should diversify its exports. This can include promoting exports of other products such as leather goods, sports goods, and pharmaceuticals. By diversifying its exports, the country can reduce the impact of any downturn in a specific sector.

Promote Tourism: Tourism is a significant source of foreign exchange for many countries. Pakistan has a rich cultural heritage and natural beauty that can attract tourists from all over the world. The government should take steps to promote tourism in the country. This can include improving infrastructure, providing visa facilities, and promoting cultural and natural attractions. By doing so, the country can increase its foreign exchange reserves and boost its economy.

Control Inflation: Inflation is a major problem in Pakistan and is contributing to the decline of its economy. The government should take steps to control inflation by reducing its spending and implementing monetary policies. By doing so, the country can reduce the cost of living for its citizens and encourage economic growth.

Pakistan’s economy is in a dire state and immediate measures need to be taken to prevent further deterioration. The tips and tricks discussed in this article can help the country get rid of its poor economy. The government should focus on improving tax collection, supporting agriculture and small businesses, diversifying exports, promoting tourism, and controlling inflation. Rupee on the Road to Recovery Against US Dollar

Image: Pexels

The Pakistani Rupee is anticipated to begin its resurgence against the US dollar, following the government’s attempts to secure a bailout program from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Traders and analysts believe that the market’s positive sentiments have been boosted by the government’s efforts to meet the IMF conditions for the state-level agreement.

During the previous week, the local currency appreciated by 2.18% against the greenback, with the rate rising from 275.30 to 269.28. Although no agreement was reached between the government of Pakistan and the IMF during the latter’s recent visit, both parties agreed to continue their negotiations.

The country’s economic crisis appears to have no quick resolution, and it is crucial that Pakistan comes to an agreement with the IMF in order to secure additional aid, avoid default, and restore its foreign currency reserves, which have decreased to $2.9 billion.

The stock market experienced a sell-off, but there was no reaction to the failure of both parties to reach a staff-level agreement. This extends the IMF timeline by at least another 10 to 12 days, which is a significant concern given the depleting reserves.

Despite this setback, the market remains optimistic that the IMF agreement will proceed, especially given the several prior actions already taken by Pakistan. A currency dealer stated that “the IMF must witness some progress on the terms; the staff-level agreement (SLA) is yet not in place.

At least in a week, the SLA might be signed and then sent to the IMF board for final approval. Overall, progress is good.” The currency market is also seeing a positive effect from exporters, who are realizing export proceeds and providing much-needed liquidity in the market.

According to a client note from Tresmark, “for the first time in many months, the market also witnessed material selling in the forward tenors by exporters.” However, there is still a substantial backlog of imports and payments, which could exceed any inflow of export proceeds. In the medium term, if the IMF agreement goes ahead with follow-up from friendly countries and multilateral institutions, demand may take a huge hit.

The client note concludes that “entities involved in the export business will see a boom, while those in the import business will notice a bust. In the short term, the market might stay above the 270/$ level, but is likely to fall back to 262/$ level in the medium term.”

Petrol Shortage Imminent: Refineries Sound the Alarm

Fuel Crisis Looms in Pakistan: Petrol Stations Running Dry in Major Cities

Refineries in Pakistan are warning of a severe petrol crisis by mid-February, unless the government takes immediate action to resolve the issues surrounding letters of credit (LCs) for imported raw materials and additives. In separate letters addressed to the Minister of State for Petroleum and the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, the refining sector expressed their concern that the delay in payments, combined with the dollar shortage, is severely hindering petrol production.

The challenges in obtaining LCs to pay for essential inputs have been identified as a major contributor to the crisis. Vendors have started hoarding supplies in anticipation of a price hike, leading to petrol shortages in Punjab. Despite petroleum products being on the State Bank of Pakistan’s priority list of essential imports, imports of raw materials and additives are being held by banks, who remain hesitant to establish LCs for future payments due in February and March 2023.

Refineries have stressed the importance of maximum production of domestic petroleum products, as oil marketing companies are already facing difficulties importing fuel due to a lack of foreign exchange liquidity in Pakistan. The refining sector also pointed out their significant contributions to the country’s economy, including revenue, government levies, and taxes, as well as their role in processing crude oil and saving precious foreign exchange through import substitution.

Any delay or suspension of foreign payments for the imports in question would severely impact refinery operations and local petrol production, the refineries warned. The situation is rapidly becoming critical and immediate action is needed to avoid a nationwide petrol crisis.
