PSL 8: Lahore and Rawalpindi matches to go ahead as scheduled

After weeks of back and forth among the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the interim Punjab government, it has been announced that the eighth season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 8) will take place in Lahore and Rawalpindi as planned.

The standoff arose when the provincial government demanded a payment of PKR500 million from the PCB to host the encounters in Lahore and Rawalpindi. Although the board had already paid PKR50 million to cover expenses on food, it refused to pay the remaining PKR450 million for lighting and security purposes.

This left the interim government with no choice but to suggest moving the Punjab-leg of the PSL 8 to Karachi to avoid the costs of lighting and security.

However, the situation has since shifted, and sources now reveal that the interim Government of Punjab has decided to be flexible on lights, security, and other expenses. The Punjab government will bear fifty percent of the bill payment, with the other fifty percent being covered by the PCB.

The parties are set to meet today to finalize the deal and end the deadlock. It is hoped that this resolution will ensure that the PSL 8 will proceed as planned, with matches in Lahore beginning on February 26 and Rawalpindi hosting matches from March 1.

Dr. Javed Akram, Minister of Health from the interim government, has confirmed that the matches will not be shifted to Karachi and will take place in Lahore and Rawalpindi as previously scheduled.

This is welcome news for cricket fans across Pakistan, who have been eagerly anticipating the PSL 8. Despite the initial difficulties, it seems that both the PCB and the interim government have found a workable solution to ensure that the tournament can go ahead as planned.

Protests in Quetta continued: Imran Khan denounces the Case of Barkhan

After remains were discovered in the Barkhan well, protests in Quetta continued for a second consecutive day.

After the discovery of a lady and her two sons’ burnt and bullet-riddled remains in a well close to Barkhan on Wednesday, Marri tribesmen in Balochistan’s Quetta maintained their sit-in outside the Red Zone for a second day in a row.

Marri, who once worked as a security guard for a provincial minister, claimed that his wife and sons were being held in the private jail of Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran, the Balochistan Minister for Communication and Works. He also claimed that five additional members of his family, including his daughter, who is 13 years old, were still being held there.

He identified them as his wife Granaz, age 40, and sons Muhammad Anwar, age 22, and Abdul Qadir, age 4, who were held in a private jail in Haji Kot for the previous four years (15).

The issue started when the remains, believed to be those of Khan Muhammad Marri’s wife and two sons, were discovered late on Monday night.

On social media and even in the Balochistan Assembly, the matter has caused outrage. The police then conducted a search of Khetran’s home. Yet no arrests were indicated.

Government raises diesel prices by Rs10 per litre to boost revenue

The government of Pakistan has decided to increase the petroleum development levy (PDL) in order to address a shortfall in revenue. The PDL for diesel will be raised by Rs5 per litre on March 1 and an additional Rs5 per litre on April 1, 2023, resulting in a total increase of Rs10 per litre. The government had aimed to collect Rs855 billion from the PDL but only managed to secure Rs680 billion, leading to a shortfall of Rs175 billion.

In addition to the PDL increase, the government will also raise the levy on diesel and High-Octane Blending Component (HOBC) from Rs40 per litre to Rs50 per litre during the next two months. This is expected to impact farmers entering crop sowing season, as diesel is widely used in the agriculture and transport sectors.

The government had allocated Rs699 billion in the budget for subsidies for the ongoing financial year, but now expects that amount to rise to Rs1,177 billion. The increase in PDL is in line with commitments made to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as Pakistan had entered into a three-year Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement with the IMF for $6 billion. Pakistan has completed eight IMF reviews and has received $3.9 billion cumulatively.

The IMF agreed to revise the primary deficit target for FY23 to 0.5% of GDP, but this was contingent on measures to generate additional revenue, rationalise expenditure, and do away with non-targeted subsidies. The IMF had initially demanded additional taxes of around Rs875 billion, but this was revised down to Rs170 billion after negotiations. The government highlighted the impact these conditions would have on the poor, and the IMF agreed to enhance social spending by Rs40 billion.

Members of the cabinet were concerned about the inflationary burden that the additional taxes would place on the common man, but agreed that the government had no choice but to return to the IMF program. The members recognised the need for structural reforms, even at the cost of eroding political capital, to steer the country out of its economic crisis cycle.
