PTA Expenses Increase by 239% in Four Years

PC: Unsplash

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) recently published its Annual Report 2022 in which it is revealed that the administrative expenses of the organisation skyrocketed by 239% in just four years. The expenses were around 1 billion four years ago and were recorded 3.5 billion in 2022.

According to the report, Rs 926 million were given to employees as a compensation for absences and other perks. Meanwhile, Rs 585 were invested in equipment, property, and other intangible assets since 2018.

Contrastingly, the administrative expenses of other regulatory organisations are much lower. For example, the National Electric Lower Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) are Rs 1.7 billion and Rs. 0.8 billion respectively.

Even in India, the Telecom Regulatory Authority which is regulating a huge industry worth INR 2.685 Trillion has reported its operating expense as INR 1 billion.

It’s shocking to see that PTA which is regulating a comparatively small industry (Rs 694 billion) has such a huge amount of operating expenses.

How can Twitter Users Now Appeal Account Suspension According to a New Rule

How can Twitter Users Now Appeal Account Suspension According to a New Rule

A Twitter user’s request to have his account reinstated will now be evaluated according to a new set of criteria, the popular microblogging site announced on Wednesday.

Here is how you can appeal.

Click here and unlock or unsuspend your Twitter account easily.

Why might my Twitter account be suspended?

Spam behaviour: Most of the accounts we suspend are suspended because they are spammy, or just plain fake, and they introduce security risks for Twitter and for everyone using Twitter. These types of accounts are against our Twitter Rules. Sometimes a real person’s account gets suspended by mistake, and in those cases, we’ll work with the person to make sure the account is unsuspended.

Account security at risk: If we suspect an account has been hacked or compromised, we may suspend it until it can be secured and restored to the account owner in order to reduce potentially malicious activity caused by the compromise.

Abusive Tweets or behavior: We may suspend an account if it has been reported to us as violating our Twitter Rules surrounding abuse. When an account engages in abusive behavior, like sending threats to others or impersonating other accounts, we may suspend it temporarily or, in some cases, permanently.

Note: In addition to showing Account suspended on a Twitter profile, we may add more details about why an account has been suspended.

Misuse of Flood Relief in Sindh Goes Unchecked

Misuse of Flood Relief in Sindh Goes Unchecked
Image: Reuters

The authorities in Sindh have fallen short in taking action against those accused of misusing the relief aid meant for the flood victims in the province. According to reports, rice sacks donated by foreign aid organizations have been spotted for sale in local markets, despite the clear note on the bags that read “These items are not for sale.”

Over 1.5 million people affected by the floods in Sindh remain homeless, and around 32,097 victims are residing in tent cities and villages. The administration has been unable to effectively crack down on those profiting off the misfortune of the flood victims.

While relief operations have been underway, including the distribution of mosquito nets and establishment of medical camps in flood-hit areas of Balochistan, health issues persist in these regions. Sources report cases of diarrhea, gastroenteritis, malaria, and respiratory diseases among the flood victims.

Several districts in Sindh and Balochistan, including Khairpur, Sukkur, Badin, Sanghar, Jamshoro, Umarkot, Dadu, Qambar-Shahdadkot, Mirpur Khas, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Naushehro Feroz, continue to be impacted by standing floodwater. The ongoing mismanagement of flood relief efforts highlights the need for more effective solutions to support the affected communities.

Pakistan Records Highest Inflation in 48 Years

Inflation in Pakistan has reached a record high, as consumer prices rose 27.6% in January compared to 13% in the same month of the previous year. This is the highest year-on-year inflation since May 1975. The inflation rate has been over 20% since June and is due to supply constraints for food products, the recent surge in petroleum prices, and the logjam of containers in the country’s ports.

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) also rose sharply by 28.53% in January compared to 24% in the same month a year ago. The overall inflation rate increased in both urban and rural areas, with food inflation in villages and cities rising by 45.2% and 39% respectively. The non-food inflation rate in urban areas was recorded at 15.6% and 20.9% in rural areas.

Core inflation, calculated by excluding food and energy items, rose 15.4% in urban areas and 19.4% in rural areas. Within the food group, prices of non-perishable food items surged 12.51% and perishable goods edged up by 2.66%.

The average inflation rate for the first seven months (July – January) of the current fiscal year came in at 25.4%, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. Analysts expect inflation to increase further with the recent depreciation of the rupee and the increase in petroleum prices.

The State Bank of Pakistan recently increased its benchmark rate to 17%, the highest in more than 24 years, in an effort to stabilize the economy which is facing supply shortages, sky-high prices, and a funding crunch.

The first case of very infectious Sub-Variant of COVID-19 BF-7 has reached Karachi. The provincial health department has confirmed the news after Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) reported the positive sample.

According to the officials at health department the patient diagnosed with the infections COVID-19 BF-7 Sub-Variant is a 49-year-old male.

The officials further said that the growth of this virus is steady. It said, “For example, in the US, it was estimated to account for 5.7 per cent of infections up to Dec 10, 2022, down from 6.6pc the week prior. The Chinese situation and BF-7’s high reproduction rate might be partly due to a low level of immunity in China from the previous infection and possibly vaccination.”

Inflation Likely to Reach 27%; Will Cross 30% After IMF Program

Inflation in Pakistan
PC: Brecorder

Pakistan is going through the worst economic crisis. It is speculated that inflation is likely to reach 27% in January. This is in comparison to the central bank’s anticipated average of 21-23% for the current financial year

It is also anticipated that the government will further increase the prices of power and gas after which the inflation will reach 30% in the upcoming months.

According to Fahad Rauf, Head of Research Ismail Iqbal Securities, “Wheat and wheat-flour prices shot up as flour mills were unable to procure wheat from provincial governments.”

He added, “We estimate the CPI (consumer price inflation) index to increase by 2.4% month-on-month led by higher food and quarterly house rent revision. On a year-on-year basis, inflation is estimated at 27% (in January 2023).”

Rauf further said, “The current real (interest) rate on core inflation is marginally positive.”

The State Bank of Pakistan has also increased its key policy rate. An official statement by SBP said, “National CPI inflation remained at elevated levels…An increase in food inflation remains the major contributor to this persistence in inflation. The uncertainty on their (fuel price) future path and expected near-term adjustments remain the major upside risks to the inflation outlook.”

Leaked Audio of Imran Khan Discussing Cipher Strategy

Another audio clip of former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, was leaked on Friday. In the recording, Khan can be heard discussing strategy with former Federal Ministers Asad Umar and Shah Mahmood Qureshi regarding the “foreign conspiracy” about the US cipher. The voice, claimed to be that of Khan, suggests holding a meeting with Qureshi and the foreign secretary to twist the minutes of the cipher.

Khan instructs his aides to change the minutes of the cipher and mentions that his former principal secretary advised having a xerox copy. During the conversation, a voice claimed to be Azam Khan’s can be heard discussing the cipher and its timing. Khan stresses the importance of avoiding naming the United States and not uttering any country’s name.

Senior PTI leader Asad Umar then corrected Khan, stating that it’s not a letter but a transcript of the meeting. Khan cleared that the term is for the masses. In the first part of the alleged audio, Khan and his principal secretary discussed ways to play with the cipher.

Khan instructed, “Don’t take America’s name, just play with this.” Azam advised holding a meeting on the subject first and to hold a meeting with Qureshi and the foreign secretary. Azam suggested that Qureshi would read out the text and that the foreign secretary would convert it into minutes to become the office record.

These leaked audio recordings have sparked controversy and raised questions about the actions of the former Prime Minister and his close aides. The authenticity of the recordings has yet to be verified, but they have created a stir in the political sphere nonetheless.
