Prime Minister of Pakistan Announces Cost-Cutting Measures to Reduce Expenses

During a news conference with members of the federal cabinet, Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, announced several cost-cutting measures, including the sale of luxury cars used by government officials. Sharif stated that the expensive cars would be returned and put up for sale, and that cabinet members may be provided with only one car for safety purposes.

Furthermore, Sharif declared that the cabinet members would be required to fly economy when travelling abroad, and that their staff would not be permitted to accompany them. These measures are intended to save costs and reduce unnecessary expenses, and reflect the government’s commitment to responsible financial management.

With the prices of petroleum products and groceries rising rapidly in Pakistan, many citizens have begun to raise concerns about the fairness of government policies. Some have pointed out that government officials receive free petrol, while citizens must pay for it out of their own pockets.

This has led to growing frustration and calls for greater transparency and equality in the distribution of resources. As inflation continues to affect the daily lives of ordinary citizens, many are urging the government to take action to address these issues and ensure that everyone is treated fairly and equitably.

Pakistan International Airlines’ bank accounts seized by tax authorities

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has had its bank accounts seized by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for failing to pay taxes totalling Rs2.86 billion. In a letter addressed to the bank manager, Deputy Commissioner Inland Revenue Unit-02 Sharjeel Ahmed stated that the government dues of Rs2,864 million were outstanding against M/S Pakistan International Airlines NTN: 0803450 for multiple tax periods.

Under Section 14(3) read with Rule 60(1)(d) of the Federal Excise Act, 2005, the letter issued a notice for the attachment of the bank account, as well as any other bank account maintained against NTN: 0803450 of the defaulter maintained with the bank, until the amount of tax is paid or recovered in full.

The FBR’s move comes as part of its ongoing efforts to recover unpaid taxes from defaulters. PIA has had its bank accounts seized by the FBR in the past for non-payment of taxes, and the airline has faced financial difficulties in recent years due to a range of factors, including mismanagement, corruption, and a decline in revenue caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

PIA is yet to respond to this latest development, but it is clear that the airline will need to take steps to address its financial challenges in order to avoid further action from the FBR and other authorities.

Protests in Quetta continued: Imran Khan denounces the Case of Barkhan

After remains were discovered in the Barkhan well, protests in Quetta continued for a second consecutive day.

After the discovery of a lady and her two sons’ burnt and bullet-riddled remains in a well close to Barkhan on Wednesday, Marri tribesmen in Balochistan’s Quetta maintained their sit-in outside the Red Zone for a second day in a row.

Marri, who once worked as a security guard for a provincial minister, claimed that his wife and sons were being held in the private jail of Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran, the Balochistan Minister for Communication and Works. He also claimed that five additional members of his family, including his daughter, who is 13 years old, were still being held there.

He identified them as his wife Granaz, age 40, and sons Muhammad Anwar, age 22, and Abdul Qadir, age 4, who were held in a private jail in Haji Kot for the previous four years (15).

The issue started when the remains, believed to be those of Khan Muhammad Marri’s wife and two sons, were discovered late on Monday night.

On social media and even in the Balochistan Assembly, the matter has caused outrage. The police then conducted a search of Khetran’s home. Yet no arrests were indicated.

Government raises diesel prices by Rs10 per litre to boost revenue

Image: PSO

The government of Pakistan has decided to increase the petroleum development levy (PDL) in order to address a shortfall in revenue. The PDL for diesel will be raised by Rs5 per litre on March 1 and an additional Rs5 per litre on April 1, 2023, resulting in a total increase of Rs10 per litre. The government had aimed to collect Rs855 billion from the PDL but only managed to secure Rs680 billion, leading to a shortfall of Rs175 billion.

In addition to the PDL increase, the government will also raise the levy on diesel and High-Octane Blending Component (HOBC) from Rs40 per litre to Rs50 per litre during the next two months. This is expected to impact farmers entering crop sowing season, as diesel is widely used in the agriculture and transport sectors.

The government had allocated Rs699 billion in the budget for subsidies for the ongoing financial year, but now expects that amount to rise to Rs1,177 billion. The increase in PDL is in line with commitments made to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as Pakistan had entered into a three-year Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement with the IMF for $6 billion. Pakistan has completed eight IMF reviews and has received $3.9 billion cumulatively.

The IMF agreed to revise the primary deficit target for FY23 to 0.5% of GDP, but this was contingent on measures to generate additional revenue, rationalise expenditure, and do away with non-targeted subsidies. The IMF had initially demanded additional taxes of around Rs875 billion, but this was revised down to Rs170 billion after negotiations. The government highlighted the impact these conditions would have on the poor, and the IMF agreed to enhance social spending by Rs40 billion.

Members of the cabinet were concerned about the inflationary burden that the additional taxes would place on the common man, but agreed that the government had no choice but to return to the IMF program. The members recognised the need for structural reforms, even at the cost of eroding political capital, to steer the country out of its economic crisis cycle.

A new AI Feature for iPhone photography.

In recent years, there has been a fierce arms race over smartphone cameras. With better sensors and lenses frequently serving as the primary selling point of each year’s new models, manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, Google, and many more have been vying to add ever-bigger sensors and further-reaching zooms.

Yet, even with the most modern versions, a zoom that is actually useful is often only available on the priciest model—in the case of Apple’s phones, the iPhone 14 Pro. Lower-end models continue to regularly use digital zooms, which don’t always result in fantastic pictures. But, AI might be the answer (if you are looking to upgrade your iPhone, see our roundup of the best iPhone 14 prices and the best iPhone 14 cases).

Halide’s Neural Telephoto tool essentially aims to provide iPhone users with a “virtual telephoto lens” that performs better than the terrible digital zooms that owners of lower-spec phones must endure.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CoaMtNhP2YD/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

The normal iPhone lacks a physical telephoto lens even in Apple’s newest model, the iPhone 14, but the Pro delivers a total of 6x optical zoom, from the 0.5x ultrawide camera to the 3x telephoto. By using digital zoom, you frequently “get foggy results, and diagonal lines look a bit jagged,” as Halide observes. However, it asserts that its Neural Telephoto, which is driven by artificial intelligence (AI), uses machine learning to enhance the details in such photographs, producing a false 2x telephoto.

Torkham Border Crossing Closed Amidst Gunfire as Afghanistan-Pakistan Relations Deteriorate

On Monday, the Torkham border crossing, the primary point of transit between Afghanistan and Pakistan, was closed. Local residents reported hearing gunfire near the normally bustling transit point. It is not clear whether Afghan or Pakistani authorities closed the border, but the move follows a sharp deterioration in relations between the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

While media reports indicated that the border was closed on Sunday evening, no reason was given. However, disputes over the 2,600 km (1,615 mile) border have been a longstanding issue between the neighboring countries.

The Torkham border crossing serves as the main entry point for travellers and goods between Pakistan and landlocked Afghanistan. A resident of the Pakistani side, Mohammad Ali Shinwari, reported that the border had been closed late on Sunday, with gunfire heard early on Monday morning.

Clashes on the border have been commonplace for years, dating back to the two-decade rule of Afghanistan’s U.S.-backed government and continuing since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2021. Tensions between Afghan and Pakistani security forces have also resulted in the closure of the second most important crossing between the two countries, at Chaman to the south.

While Pakistani officials were not immediately available for comment, the country’s foreign minister warned at a security conference in Germany on Sunday that militancy from Afghanistan could threaten global security. In response, a Taliban foreign ministry spokesperson urged Pakistan to raise issues in private rather than at public forums.

Despite the rising tensions, the Taliban foreign ministry assured that its territory would not be used against other countries, particularly against its neighbors. The closure of the Torkham border crossing remains in effect, with no indications of a resolution anytime soon.

“Tax the Rich, Subside the Poor,” IMF Tells Pakistan

PC: DW Asia Twitter

Pakistan is on the verge of getting bankrupt and urgently needs the International Monterey Fund’s (IMF) help to come out of this chaos. Both the parties are holding talks to reach an agreement for $1.1Bn.

IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva has asked Pakistan to tax the rich, subsidise the poor.

She further said that if Pakistan wants to stay as a country, it must make its rich pay taxes and give subsidies to the poor

She said in an interview, “My heart goes to the people of Pakistan. They have been devastated by the floods that affected one-third of the population of the country.”

She added, “What we are asking for are steps Pakistan needs to take to be able to function as a country and not to get into a dangerous place where its debt needs to be restructured. I want to stress that we are emphasising two things. Number one, tax revenues. Those who can, those that are making good money [in the] public or private sector need to contribute to the economy. Secondly, to have a fairer distribution of the pressures by moving subsidies only towards the people who really need it.”

It shouldn’t be that the wealthy benefit from subsidies. It should be the poor [who] benefit from them. she further said.

During the pre-dawn meal, also known as Suhoor, it’s important to eat a balanced meal with complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats. This will help keep you full and energized throughout the day. During the post-sunset meal, also known as Iftar, start with a light snack like dates and water, then move on to a balanced meal with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and protein.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water is essential during the fasting period. Try to drink at least 8-10 cups of water between Iftar and Suhoor. You can also add some natural electrolytes like coconut water or electrolyte powder to your water to keep yourself hydrated.

Avoid Processed Foods

Processed and high-fat foods can leave you feeling sluggish and tired during the day. It’s important to focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates. Avoid foods that are high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats.

Exercise

Although it may be tempting to skip exercising during the fasting period, regular exercise can help you stay energized and improve your overall health. Plan your exercise routine during the non-fasting hours or during the evening to avoid feeling tired during the day.

Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep is crucial during the fasting period. It’s important to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every day to keep your body functioning properly.

Seek Medical Advice

If you have any pre-existing health conditions or are taking any medication, it’s important to consult your doctor before starting the fast. Your doctor can give you personalized advice on how to stay healthy and safe during the fasting period.

In conclusion, staying healthy and eating right during Ramadan fasting requires careful planning and attention to your body’s needs. By following these tips, you can ensure that you stay energized, healthy, and focused throughout the month. Remember, fasting during Ramadan is an act of devotion, and taking care of your body is an important part of that devotion.
