Pakistan has earned a top score in the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024, placing it among the world’s leading cybersecurity role models. With a Tier 1 ranking, Pakistan has solidified its position as a global leader in cybersecurity.
The Global Cybersecurity Index: A Snapshot
The Global Cybersecurity Index 2024 ranks nations based on their cybersecurity infrastructure and preparedness. Countries are evaluated across five tiers:
- Tier 1 (Role-Modelling): Score 95-100
- Tier 2 (Advancing): Score 85-95
- Tier 3 (Establishing): Score 55-85
- Tier 4 (Evolving): Score 20-55
- Tier 5 (Building): Score 0-20
Pakistan is now ranked in Tier 1, with a score between 95-100, reflecting its robust cybersecurity practices. Other countries sharing this ranking include the United States, Germany, Bahrain, Italy, and Australia.
Key Achievements
Pakistan achieved top marks in legal and organizational measures, earning a perfect score of 20/20. The country also excelled in capacity development and cooperation efforts, with scores of 20 and 18.48, respectively. Pakistan’s technical measures scored 18.21, solidifying its place among global cybersecurity leaders.
This is a significant improvement from the previous ranking in 2021, where Pakistan stood at 79th place. The leap to the top tier demonstrates the country’s dedication to strengthening its digital defenses.
Government Recognition
Following the release of the report, State Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, applauded the country’s efforts. “Our placement in Tier 1 alongside nations like the United States and Singapore shows Pakistan’s commitment to bolstering cybersecurity measures and protecting its digital infrastructure,” she said.
