The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for several upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) following forecasts of heavy rainfall from July 19 to July 25. The advisory comes as authorities prepare for possible flooding, landslides, and other weather-related emergencies across the province’s northern regions.
According to the PDMA, widespread and persistent rainfall is expected to affect upper KP throughout the week, significantly increasing the risk of flash floods in rivers, streams, and low-lying areas. Mountainous districts are also likely to face a heightened threat of landslides due to saturated soil and continuous rainfall.
The authority has warned that communities living near rivers, nullahs, and vulnerable slopes should remain alert and closely follow weather advisories issued by the relevant departments. Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and to take precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property.
A Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) occurs when water retained by a glacier is suddenly released after a natural dam collapses. Such events can trigger powerful flash floods capable of causing widespread damage to infrastructure, agricultural land, roads, and settlements located downstream.
Northern Pakistan is particularly vulnerable to GLOF incidents because it is home to thousands of glaciers, many of which have formed unstable glacial lakes. Rising temperatures and changing weather patterns have increased concerns about the frequency of such events in recent years.
The PDMA has directed district administrations, rescue services, and relevant government departments to remain on high alert during the forecast period. Emergency response teams have been advised to ensure the availability of rescue equipment and maintain readiness in areas considered most vulnerable to flooding.
Authorities have also encouraged local administrations to monitor water levels in rivers and streams while coordinating with meteorological agencies to provide timely warnings if weather conditions deteriorate further. Early preparedness is considered essential for reducing the impact of potential natural disasters.
Motorists and tourists planning to travel to northern areas have been advised to check the latest weather updates before departing. Heavy rainfall can lead to road blockages, landslides, and disruptions to transportation routes, particularly in mountainous regions.
The latest advisory reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness during the monsoon season. Timely alerts allow emergency services and local communities to take preventive action before severe weather conditions develop.
With heavy rains expected across upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the coming days, residents are urged to remain vigilant, follow official safety instructions, and report emergencies to the relevant authorities. Staying informed and taking precautionary measures can help minimize the risks associated with flash floods, landslides, and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods.
