The Sharjah Police Anti-Begging Unit arrested a man after he was found to have collected a staggering Dh14,000 (over one million Pakistani rupees) through begging in just 72 hours.
The suspect, who was residing in the UAE illegally, was apprehended near a mosque where he had been appealing to worshippers for financial assistance. His strategy of preying on public sympathy proved highly lucrative until a concerned citizen tipped off authorities, leading to his arrest.
Authorities Crack Down on Organized Begging
Brigadier General Omar Al-Ghazal Al-Shamsi, Director of the Special Tasks Department and Head of the Beggars and Street Vendors Monitoring Team, underscored that begging is not just a social issue but a security concern. Many individuals, he warned, exploit people’s kindness to make tax-free earnings, often turning it into a seasonal profession—especially during religious occasions.
To curb this menace, Sharjah Police has intensified patrols and surveillance, particularly during Ramadan, under the “Begging is a Crime, Giving is a Responsibility” campaign. The initiative aims to dismantle networks that use deception to amass significant sums of money illegally.
Public Urged to Stay Vigilant
Authorities have urged residents to avoid giving money directly to beggars, as doing so encourages fraudulent practices. Instead, those wishing to help should donate to registered charities that ensure assistance reaches the truly needy.
Residents are also encouraged to report beggars to authorities through the toll-free number 80040 or the call center at 901.
With increased surveillance and public cooperation, Sharjah Police hopes to put an end to illegal begging, ensuring that financial aid reaches those who genuinely need it through proper channels.
