A devastating road accident near Malir Halt on Monday claimed the lives of a pregnant woman, her husband, and their unborn baby after a reckless water tanker ran over their motorcycle.
Eyewitnesses described the horrifying scene as the couple, en route to the hospital for the woman’s delivery, was struck by the speeding tanker. The force of the impact was so severe that the baby was delivered prematurely at the crash site. Despite immediate rescue efforts, all three succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
Authorities swiftly apprehended the tanker driver and his assistant. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Korangi confirmed that legal action is underway, with an FIR being registered against those responsible.
A City Under Siege by Traffic Accidents
The tragic loss of this family highlights a growing crisis in Karachi—rampant road accidents caused by heavy vehicles. Statistics paint a grim picture: in just the first 45 days of 2025, traffic collisions have claimed 107 lives, including 14 women and 11 children. An additional 1,493 people have been injured.
The bulk of these accidents involve massive vehicles like dumpers, trailers, and water tankers. Traffic police reports indicate that 32 such collisions have occurred since January alone. In response, authorities have taken action, issuing over 34,000 fines, cancelling 532 vehicle fitness certificates, and arresting nearly 500 reckless drivers.
Growing Public Outrage
Frustration over unchecked road carnage has led to extreme reactions. Over the past few days, unidentified individuals have set several heavy vehicles ablaze in Karachi’s Landhi, Korangi, and Surjani Town areas. Authorities suspect this is an act of retaliation by citizens fed up with the city’s worsening road safety crisis.
In an attempt to prevent further tragedies, a four-member investigative committee has been formed to assess the causes of these accidents. The committee will scrutinize vehicle fitness certifications and the licensing process for heavy vehicle drivers.
