On Tuesday, Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka and Ashleigh Gardner of Australia were crowned as the ICC Players of the Month for June, marking their outstanding performances.
Hasaranga showcased exceptional bowling skills, claiming an impressive 26 wickets with an astonishing average of just 10.00. Notably, he made history by becoming the first spinner to achieve three consecutive five-wicket hauls in ODI cricket during the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe.
Expressing his delight, Hasaranga said, “I am incredibly thrilled to receive this prestigious award, especially at such a crucial moment for Sri Lanka Cricket following our qualification for the Cricket World Cup in India. It’s a great privilege and honor to be chosen as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month.”
Travis Head of Australia and Sean Williams of Zimbabwe were also strong contenders for the award in the men’s category, highlighting the fierce competition.
In the women’s category, Ashleigh Gardner secured the award after her exceptional performance in the Test match against England. She contributed significantly, taking four wickets for 99 runs in the first innings and impressive match-winning figures of eight for 66 in the second innings.
Grateful for the recognition, Gardner expressed her gratitude to those who voted for her as the ICC Women’s Player of the Month. She emphasized the significance of winning an Ashes Test match at Trent Bridge, describing it as a special moment for the team. She further acknowledged the challenges of winning a Test match overseas and expressed her excitement to be part of the record-breaking crowds witnessed during the women’s Ashes series in England.
Gardner’s achievement marks her third Player of the Month award, triumphing over Tammy Beaumont of England and Hayley Matthews of the West Indies, showcasing her consistent excellence in the sport.
