India’s ongoing oil trade with Moscow has drawn fresh criticism from the United States, with a senior Trump aide claiming that New Delhi is indirectly financing Russia in Ukraine war. The accusation, made by former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, has intensified scrutiny of India’s role in the geopolitical balance amid the ongoing conflict.
Speaking on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Miller expressed alarm over India’s growing imports of Russian crude, claiming, “People will be shocked to learn that India is basically tied with China in purchasing Russian oil.” He added that such purchases effectively support Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine, despite mounting Western pressure to isolate Russia economically.
Energy Ties or Strategic Autonomy?
The Indian government has not issued an official response to the statement, but sources in New Delhi maintain that India will continue sourcing oil from Russia. Officials argue that energy security and affordability remain top priorities, and purchasing discounted crude is a strategic decision rather than a political endorsement.
Still, the charge that India is financing Russia in Ukraine war is gaining traction in U.S. political circles. The timing is especially significant: a 25% tariff on Indian goods came into force last week, targeting countries engaging in military and energy transactions with Russia.
