Government Plans to Distribute 500,000 Chromebooks to Students Across Pakistan

500000 Chromebooks planned for students across Pakistan

The Prime Minister’s Youth Programme is preparing to distribute 500,000 Chromebooks to students across Pakistan as part of the government’s effort to expand digital learning and access to technology.

The programme announced the plan on October 22, saying the devices are intended to provide students with greater access to digital education, skills development and innovation opportunities.

However, students should note that the government has not yet announced the eligibility criteria, application process or distribution schedule.

What Has Been Announced?

The latest announcement confirms a planned distribution of:

500,000 Chromebooks

to students across Pakistan.

The initiative forms part of the broader Digital Pakistan and youth-development agenda.

Chromebooks are lightweight laptops running Google’s ChromeOS operating system and are designed primarily around web-based applications, cloud storage and online learning tools.

Is Registration Open?

Not yet, based on the latest announcement.

The Prime Minister’s Youth Programme has not provided:

  • an application portal;
  • eligibility requirements;
  • student age limits;
  • university or school criteria;
  • provincial quotas; or
  • an exact distribution date.

Students should therefore avoid websites or social-media pages claiming that official registration has opened unless the PM Youth Programme publishes the application process.

Is This Connected With Local Chromebook Production?

Pakistan has already been developing local Chromebook assembly capacity.

The Federal Education Ministry previously announced a partnership involving NRTC Pakistan, Allied Australian and Tech Valley Pakistan to establish a Chromebook assembly line with an initial annual capacity of 500,000 devices, eventually scalable to one million.

The Chromebook assembly facility at NRTC’s Haripur complex was subsequently launched, with official plans describing capacity of up to 500,000 units annually.

Were 500,000 Chromebooks Announced Before?

Yes.

Earlier in 2026, Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Chairman Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan also referred to plans to distribute 500,000 Chromebooks, including devices for madrassa students, as part of a wider technology and skills initiative.

The October 22 announcement therefore appears to reinforce and broaden the government’s Chromebook distribution plans.

What Should Students Do?

Students interested in receiving a Chromebook should wait for official details from:

  • Prime Minister’s Youth Programme;
  • Ministry of Federal Education;
  • their university or educational institution; and
  • other official government channels.

Trending Pakistan will update this page once the government announces eligibility, registration, application links and distribution dates.

The planned distribution of 500,000 Chromebooks could become one of Pakistan’s largest student technology initiatives.

For now, however, only the broad distribution plan has been confirmed. No official application process or eligibility criteria were announced on October 22.

Students should therefore wait for the next official notification rather than submitting personal information to unofficial websites.
