Pakistan Opens Kartarpur Corridor for Guru Nanak’s 557th Birth Anniversary Celebrations

Pakistan has opened the Kartarpur Corridor for Sikh pilgrims attending religious celebrations marking the 557th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. The initiative is part of arrangements to facilitate religious gatherings and provide Sikh devotees with access to one of their faith’s most significant historical sites.

The Pakistani government had announced the reopening of the corridor on September 17, 2026, describing the decision as a gesture of religious goodwill. Preparations have also been completed for ceremonies commemorating the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak.

The Kartarpur Corridor connects Dera Baba Nanak in India’s Punjab with Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, located in Pakistan’s Narowal district. The historic shrine holds special importance for Sikh communities because Guru Nanak spent the final years of his life in Kartarpur.

Every year, Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary, widely known as Gurpurab, is observed by Sikh communities around the world. The occasion brings together devotees for prayers, religious ceremonies and gatherings that celebrate the teachings and legacy of the founder of Sikhism.

The opening of the corridor provides an important opportunity for Sikh pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib and participate in religious activities associated with the occasion. The shrine is among the most significant pilgrimage destinations for followers of Sikhism.

Pakistan has continued to highlight the religious and historical importance of Kartarpur as a destination for Sikh visitors. The corridor was established to facilitate easier access to the holy site, particularly for pilgrims travelling from across the border.

The initiative also carries importance for religious tourism and people-to-people connections. By facilitating access to religious sites, the corridor provides opportunities for visitors to learn about Sikh history, heritage and traditions.

Gurdwara Darbar Sahib is closely associated with Guru Nanak’s life and teachings. Its location makes it particularly meaningful for Sikh devotees who wish to pay their respects and connect with the historical roots of their religion.

The arrangements for the 557th birth anniversary celebrations reflect the importance of the occasion for the global Sikh community. Religious gatherings typically include prayers, recitation of sacred hymns and other traditional activities honouring Guru Nanak’s message.

His teachings emphasised equality, humanity, compassion, honesty and service to others. These principles continue to influence Sikh religious and cultural traditions across different countries.

The reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor for the celebrations is also expected to draw attention to Pakistan’s religious heritage and its role in facilitating access to important Sikh pilgrimage locations.

As preparations for the anniversary ceremonies conclude, the corridor remains an important symbol of religious connection and cultural heritage for Sikh communities. The occasion provides an opportunity for devotees to honour Guru Nanak’s legacy at a site closely connected with his life.
