Gilgit-Baltistan, a place known for its breathtaking natural beauty and challenging terrain, has been named one of the top travel destinations to visit in 2025 by the world-renowned CNN Travel. The region is nestled among the majestic Karakoram Mountains, with landscapes that are as awe-inspiring as they are demanding.
CNN Travel quite aptly called the journey to Gilgit-Baltistan a journey in itself, as such weather conditions, coupled with uneven road conditions, can be unpredictably disruptive during travel. In fact, however, the essence of this untamed paradise is precisely its rugged beauty and seclusion.
Gilgit-Baltistan is home to no less than five of the 14 “eight-thousander” peaks in the world, one of which is the legendary K2, commonly known as the “Savage Mountain.” There are all types of travelers – from seasoned mountaineers climbing the towering peaks to intrepid trekkers discovering hidden valleys and thrill-seekers enjoying paragliding adventures.
While the attraction of these grand mountains is undeniable, the region also poses inherent risks. In 2024, a tragic series of events unfolded, with nine mountaineers losing their lives during various expeditions. This stark reminder serves as a poignant reminder of the respect and caution required when venturing into such challenging terrain.
