President Zardari Signs 26th Constitutional Amendment Into Law

In a significant move for Pakistan’s legislative history, President Asif Ali Zardari has signed the 26th constitutional amendment into law. This amendment marks a crucial step in reshaping the country’s governance structure, addressing long-standing demands for political reforms. The newly signed law primarily focuses on electoral and judicial reforms, with the goal of promoting transparency and efficiency within the country’s political system.

The 26th amendment is expected to bring notable changes in the powers of the judiciary, particularly regarding the selection process for key positions, such as the Chief Justice of Pakistan. The law also addresses electoral integrity, providing clearer guidelines for voter verification and ensuring a transparent election process. These changes come in the wake of widespread debates on how to reduce corruption and political influence within state institutions.

Political analysts are calling this a landmark decision, emphasizing its potential to improve Pakistan’s democratic processes. However, some opposition leaders have raised concerns about the long-term implications, calling for further debate on the law’s implementation. As President Zardari puts his stamp on this historic amendment, the public and political stakeholders will be closely watching how these changes unfold in the coming months.

Uncertainty Looms Over Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2024-25 Schedule Amid PCB Delays

Uncertainty remains about the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2024-25 schedule, while the Pakistan Cricket Board had issued a preliminary schedule suggesting that play would start on October 20. This is a troubling development because Pakistan’s international Test season has already begun and the seven home Test matches are scheduled to take place between August 2024 and January 2025.

All dates for domestic competition were announced by the PCB back in August, but none are confirmed, including the QeA Trophy. Despite a PCB official saying back in September that the tournament was going to begin on time, ESPNcricinfo discovers no one in the PCB has the slightest idea when it is going to start. The schedule simply sits idle awaiting the seal of approval from chairman Mohsin Naqvi, and there has been no public explanation as to why it’s being kept in limbo, though budgetary considerations might well be part of the reason.

It is particularly frustrating for members of the Test squad who have been deprived of vital red-ball practice ahead of their crucial Test series, including the ongoing series against England. The Champions One-Day Cup in September, although well promoted, did not help as it did not coincide with the red-ball preparation.

The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy witnessed uncertainties in schedule and format in the past, but the kind of uncertainty witnessed now is unprecedented. Normally, this tournament would have started by late October. In the last two seasons, it began as early as 1st September. Now, both fans and players are eagerly waiting to hear a word from officials, which affects the preparations for a crammed international calendar for Pakistan.

Consumers to Receive Cheaper Electricity as KE Reaches Historic Milestone

In a major relief for electricity consumers, K-Electric (KE) announced a historic milestone that could result in cheaper power tariffs for residents of Karachi. On October 19, 2024, KE confirmed that it had significantly increased its power generation capacity, thanks to the successful commissioning of a new 900-megawatt power plant in Bin Qasim.

This development comes as part of KE’s broader efforts to modernize its infrastructure and reduce reliance on expensive fuel sources. The new plant is expected to lower electricity costs for consumers by reducing the utility’s dependence on imported fuel, which has been a major factor in driving up electricity prices. KE officials have also hinted at further price reductions if the cost of fuel remains stable in the coming months.

The move has been widely welcomed by both consumers and industry experts, who have long called for reforms in Karachi’s energy sector. With KE’s enhanced capacity, the city could see improved supply reliability, reducing the frequent power outages that have plagued residents for years.

Four Female Dead Bodies Found in Karachi’s Lea Market Area

A tragic and grim discovery was made in Karachi’s Lea Market area, where four female dead bodies were found in a residential building. The incident, reported on October 19, 2024, has sent shockwaves through the community as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Local police were called to the scene after neighbors reported a foul odor emanating from the apartment. Upon entering, they discovered the bodies of four women, believed to be aged between 20 and 45. Initial reports suggest that the women may have been victims of foul play, though the exact cause of death remains undetermined pending autopsy results.

Law enforcement officials have cordoned off the area and launched a detailed investigation. According to sources, several suspects have been detained for questioning, though no official statement has been released regarding potential motives. Karachi has seen an increase in violent crimes in recent months, and this latest incident has further highlighted the need for improved safety measures in densely populated areas.

We Have Required Numbers, Even JUI Doesn’t Agree: Khawaja Asif

Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Asif claimed on October 19, 2024, that the party had the required numbers to form the next government, despite reservations from key political players, including the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI). Asif’s remarks came during an exclusive interview with the media, where he discussed the ongoing political wrangling ahead of the general elections.

Asif asserted that while some parties may not be fully on board with PML-N’s agenda, his party had successfully built enough support to move forward. “We are confident about our position. Even if some parties, like JUI, have their differences, we have the numbers to push through important legislation and form a stable government,” Asif said.

The remarks have sparked discussions within political circles, as JUI’s position could be crucial in determining the outcome of coalition-building efforts. The PML-N is currently engaged in negotiations with various parties to secure its leadership role in the next government, especially as tensions rise over electoral alliances.

Bilawal Bhutto Named PPP Parliamentary Leader in NA

In a significant move, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has been named the parliamentary leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in the National Assembly. The decision, formalized on October 19, 2024, comes as PPP prepares for the upcoming general elections and seeks to strengthen its position in national politics. Bilawal’s leadership will be pivotal as the party navigates alliances and challenges from opposition forces.

The PPP’s parliamentary board unanimously approved Bilawal’s appointment, reflecting his growing influence within the party. This development is seen as a strategic move to consolidate the party’s standing in the lower house of parliament, where it has been a key player in legislation and government oversight.

Bilawal’s political career has seen a rapid ascent in recent years, marked by his active engagement in parliamentary debates and foreign policy matters. His appointment as parliamentary leader signals the party’s confidence in his ability to steer the PPP in the right direction amid a politically charged atmosphere in the country.

Two Khawarij Killed, Five Arrested in Balochistan IBOs

In a major development, security forces in Balochistan successfully neutralized two Khawarij militants during intelligence-based operations (IBOs). The operations, carried out in the Makran and Panjgur districts, also led to the arrest of five militants who were involved in terror activities. According to security sources, the militants were part of a banned outfit responsible for orchestrating several attacks on civilians and law enforcement personnel.

The IBOs were conducted in response to actionable intelligence gathered over weeks. The militants killed in the operation were allegedly involved in extortion, kidnapping for ransom, and attacks on security convoys. The arrested individuals are now in custody, and investigations are underway to uncover their network and plans for future operations.

This action is part of the military’s ongoing efforts to root out terrorism in Balochistan, a province plagued by insurgency and militancy. The region has witnessed an uptick in such operations aimed at neutralizing threats posed by various militant groups, especially the Khawarij factions that oppose the state’s rule.

Get up Islamabad students: Saturday is a working day!

The Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) has announced Saturday, October 19, 2024, as a working day for all the model schools and colleges of Islamabad that reside within urban and rural sectors.

This has been done in an attempt to help restore classes after weeks of academic disruption caused by class shutdowns due to Shanghai Cooperation Organization activities held in the city.

Saturday in Islamabad is a working day on October 19: Here is why

According to the order issued by Dr. Tabassum Naz, Director of Schools, the FDE would recover the lost academic days and keep the academic schedule on track by declaring Saturday a working day.

This way, FDE would prevent the students from losing a day in their syllabus. The extra instructional day will be useful for the schools and colleges in order to recover lost time and to keep other crucial academic activities on track.

In such a scenario, declaring Saturday a working day as a compensatory measure for the lost days during the SCO event would be warranted. It also vindicates the FDE’s efforts to maintain academic standards properly and that students receive adequate time to complete their coursework.

On that day, schools and colleges will have to arrange makeup classes so that all the lost hours can be recovered and the usual train of study can be regained.

The FDE has also transmitted this notice to all institutions under it jurisdiction so that Saturday is used as a working day in order to recover the instructional time lost during conference days.

Maulana Fazl Urges PML-N to Notify Mansoor Ali Shah as Next CJP

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), has urged the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to notify Justice Mansoor Ali Shah as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP). His recommendation comes ahead of the expected retirement of Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa. Mansoor Ali Shah, known for his progressive legal opinions and judicial reforms, has emerged as a top candidate for the post.

Rehman’s suggestion has raised eyebrows within political circles, as the appointment of the next CJP is a crucial decision with wide-reaching implications. Justice Shah’s potential elevation to the top judicial position has been the subject of speculation, with various political parties weighing in on the decision.

Some analysts believe that Rehman’s endorsement of Shah could influence the final decision, given the JUI-F’s political clout within the ruling coalition. However, the PML-N leadership has yet to make any formal announcements, and discussions on the matter are expected to continue in the coming weeks

PM Shehbaz Sharif Consults Cabinet on Constitutional Tweaks

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has initiated consultations with his cabinet members regarding a series of proposed constitutional amendments. The discussions revolve around making significant tweaks to the governance framework and addressing ambiguities in key laws. According to sources, these amendments aim to streamline legislative procedures and provide clarity on issues such as electoral reforms and judicial powers.

The prime minister is expected to build a consensus within the cabinet before presenting the draft amendments in Parliament. The changes are being crafted with input from legal experts and coalition partners, ensuring that the amendments reflect the broader political goals of the ruling alliance.

While details of the amendments remain under wraps, the move has sparked speculation about potential shifts in power dynamics within Pakistan’s governance structures. Critics have raised concerns that some amendments may be aimed at centralizing power, but government officials insist the changes are necessary for smoother governance

Constitutional Amendments: PPP Claims Unanimous Approval, PTI Denies

A new political clash has emerged as the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) claims that the draft for constitutional amendments was unanimously approved by the ruling coalition. However, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has outrightly denied any consensus on the matter. According to PPP officials, the amendments are designed to address ambiguities in the constitution, including changes in governance structures and electoral reforms.

PTI has expressed strong opposition, accusing the ruling party of rushing the process without proper deliberation. The proposed amendments, if passed, could impact key constitutional provisions, such as the distribution of powers between federal and provincial governments. This disagreement has raised concerns that the amendments may not receive the broad political support needed for approval.

While the PPP continues to push the narrative of unanimous approval, the PTI’s denial suggests that further discussions are likely. Political analysts predict a heated debate in Parliament as the government moves forward with the legislative process

Election Act Amendment Cannot Override July 12 Ruling on Reserved Seats: SC

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ruled that amendments to the Election Act cannot override its earlier decision on reserved seats, delivered on July 12, 2024. The court had ruled that any changes to the allocation of reserved seats for women and minorities must adhere strictly to constitutional guidelines. This decision comes amid significant political debate about whether recent amendments infringe upon the autonomy of the judiciary and the constitution.

The controversy arose when political parties clashed over the distribution of reserved seats in the National Assembly and provincial legislatures. Some factions argued that the recent amendments unfairly favor certain political parties. The SC’s ruling effectively reinforces its earlier stance, ensuring that reserved seats remain governed by its constitutional interpretation.

This decision has been met with mixed reactions, with some political groups hailing it as a victory for judicial independence, while others argue that it stifles legislative progress. Legal experts believe this ruling sets a precedent that future electoral reforms will need to align with constitutional provisions

Pakistan Seeks US Presidential Pardon for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui

Pakistan has intensified its diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist currently serving a lengthy sentence in the U.S. The Islamabad High Court recently supported the government’s petition seeking a presidential pardon for Dr. Siddiqui on humanitarian grounds. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to raise the issue during talks with U.S. officials at the United Nations assembly. The government is also preparing a clemency plea, emphasizing Dr. Siddiqui’s deteriorating health and public sentiment surrounding her case.

Dr. Siddiqui has been a controversial figure in both Pakistan and the U.S. since her conviction in 2010. The Pakistani government has pursued various legal and diplomatic avenues for her release, but progress has been slow. Her family, led by her sister Dr. Fauzia Siddiqui, has been at the forefront of the campaign, pushing for humanitarian considerations to be prioritized.

In addition to the clemency request, Pakistan has explored the possibility of a prisoner exchange agreement with the U.S. This move has garnered significant attention from local media and advocacy groups, who hope that international pressure might finally lead to her repatriation

Nawaz Sharif meets Indian journalists, discusses revival of Pakistan-India relations

Nawaz Sharif called a meeting with Indian journalists in Lahore, and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader pressed on the need to bring about improvement in Pakistan-India relations. The meeting, arranged on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation conference, saw Sharif holding discussions with the visiting Indian media professionals on subjects ranging from diplomacy through sports to general interest. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was also present during the discussion.

Sharif said he was hoping the SCO conference would lead to a way out and become a stepping stone toward restoration of Pakistan-India relations. Sharif underscored the need for peaceful relations between the two neighbours.

“If the Pakistan-India relations improve, many facets of our bilateral cooperation will see an improvement,” he explained.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader says Pakistan-India relations can be improved through cricket

Sharif then brought up another tool of diplomacy sports, especially cricket-where the visit by India to play in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan could serve as a symbol of change.

Nawaz Sharif believed cross-border interaction was relevant and said the Indian cricket team should be allowed to visit Pakistan and participate in key tournaments.

“Ask the Indian cricket team; they would say, ‘We want to come to Pakistan and play.'”

He felt this could form one of the most significant steps in softening relations between the two nations. He also mentioned the absence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the SCO conference, saying that personal presence could have contributed much more to the improvement in Pakistan-India relations.

Maryam Nawaz added her voice, enthusiastically speaking of her personal desire to visit India. She said,

“I want to visit Indian Punjab to understand the cultural differences better.”

She made it amply clear that both countries have much to gain by increasing dialogue and further cooperation that could outline a better future for Pakistan-India relations.

As per the move, no classes will take place. An official notification issued earlier today communicated this decision.

Power Sector Subsidies Surge by 400% in Five Years: World Bank Report

A World Bank report released on October 17, 2024, revealed that subsidies in Pakistan’s power sector have surged by an astonishing 400% over the past five years. The report, which analyzes the country’s energy sector dynamics, highlights the growing burden of subsidies on the national economy, with costs ballooning due to inefficiencies, mismanagement, and rising energy prices.

The report identifies several factors contributing to the surge, including outdated power infrastructure, delays in renewable energy projects, and the increasing reliance on expensive imported fuel. The subsidies are largely aimed at keeping electricity prices affordable for consumers, but they have resulted in an unsustainable fiscal strain. According to the World Bank, Pakistan’s energy subsidy bill now accounts for nearly 2.5% of its GDP, a figure that has alarmed financial experts.

The report urges Pakistan to undertake comprehensive reforms in the energy sector, including better management of distribution companies, investment in renewable energy, and the gradual phasing out of subsidies. It warns that without these measures, the country’s economic recovery could be at risk.

Government officials acknowledged the findings, but emphasized that reducing subsidies too quickly could exacerbate the financial pressures on lower-income households. Energy Minister Khurram Dastgir stated that while reforms are necessary, they must be implemented in a way that balances fiscal responsibility with the needs of Pakistan’s poorest citizens.

IMF Approves Increase in Benazir Kafalat Program Stipend Amount

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved an increase in the stipend amount distributed under Pakistan’s Benazir Kafalat Program, a significant move aimed at supporting low-income households amid rising inflation. On October 17, 2024, the IMF greenlit this increase as part of its ongoing financial support package for Pakistan, recognizing the need for enhanced social safety nets in the current economic climate.

The new stipend amount, which was raised by approximately 20%, will benefit over 8 million families registered under the program. The decision comes at a time when Pakistan is grappling with economic challenges, including high inflation, soaring food prices, and a weakened currency. The IMF’s approval followed extensive discussions with Pakistan’s finance ministry and relevant stakeholders, who argued that bolstering social welfare programs is crucial for poverty alleviation.

The Benazir Kafalat Program has been a cornerstone of Pakistan’s poverty reduction efforts, providing monthly cash transfers to low-income women. The increase in stipends has been widely welcomed, particularly by welfare organizations, though some economists have raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of such subsidies given Pakistan’s fiscal constraints.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded the IMF’s decision, stating that it would provide much-needed relief to millions of Pakistanis struggling with the economic downturn. However, opposition parties criticized the government’s reliance on IMF bailouts, calling for more self-reliant economic policies.

ARY Unveils Key Points of JUI’s Draft for Constitutional Amendment

On October 17, 2024, ARY News unveiled key points from a proposed constitutional amendment draft prepared by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F). The amendment, which is being circulated among political stakeholders, aims to address several structural and legal changes that the JUI-F believes are necessary to strengthen the country’s democratic system and Islamic identity.

The draft highlights amendments in areas related to judicial independence, the role of the military in civilian governance, and the introduction of stricter Islamic laws. It also proposes reforms in election procedures, focusing on greater transparency and reduced influence of money in politics. According to the ARY report, one of the key points includes a clause that would make Islamic teachings more central to Pakistan’s legal framework, an idea that has sparked both support and opposition from various political factions.

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have expressed interest in reviewing the draft, though no official comments have been made regarding their stance. However, some secular parties, particularly the PTI, have voiced concerns about potential challenges to Pakistan’s secular legal principles.

JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman has long advocated for constitutional changes, particularly focusing on enhancing Islamic principles within governance. The proposed draft is expected to be debated in parliament in the coming months, where it could face considerable opposition from liberal and secular parties.
