Karachi Airport Runway Closure for Repairs

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has taken a proactive step in ensuring the safety and reliability of Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport by temporarily closing two runways. This move has been prompted by the discovery of cracks in runways 25-L and 7-R, raising concerns about flight operations and passenger safety.

As the regulatory body responsible for overseeing Pakistan’s air travel, the CAA has prioritized safety and maintenance in the aviation industry. They have officially issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) outlining a comprehensive repair schedule to address the runway cracks. Both runways will undergo daily closures over the next five months to facilitate the necessary repairs, ultimately enhancing the long-term safety and integrity of the airport’s infrastructure.

To mitigate disruptions to air travel, the CAA has collaborated closely with airlines, keeping them well-informed about the impending closures. During the repair period, alternative runways will be utilized to ensure minimal interruptions to passenger and cargo services.

This proactive approach aligns with international aviation standards, which emphasize the importance of regular maintenance and safety checks in preserving the integrity of aviation infrastructure. The CAA’s commitment to safety reaffirms its dedication to providing secure and efficient air travel services for all passengers and stakeholders.

IMC Takes a Bold Decision to Launch Corolla Cross Hybrid Amid Diminishing Car Demand and Increasing Fuel Prices

Photo: Reuters

The Indus Motor Company (IMC), assembler of Toyota vehicles in Pakistan, takes a bold step to counter increasing fuel prices in the country by planning to launch Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles by end of December or start of January next year.

This launch is considered to be a strategic move by the company to bounce back amid diminishing car demand and increasing fuel prices.

Ali Asghar Jamali, CEO IMC, said in a press briefing that the new Corolla Cross is likely to consume 50% less fuel than its conventional counterparts running on diesel and petrol.

He further said that the hybrid technology will significantly cut the import bill and help save around $37 million on 30,000 hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) units.

Jamali said, “This move towards HEVs is a sustainable solution to Pakistan’s economic challenges, addressing macroeconomic objectives, bolstering employment, increasing exports, and trimming imports.”

Toyota Corolla Cross is going to be Pakistan’s first ever locally assembled HEV SUV vehicle. The company has already invested $100 million in introducing HEV cars in the country.

In addition to fuel consumption, the HEV vehicles are also ideal in reducing carbon footprints.

Jamali added, “Pakistan is acutely affected by climate change, necessitating comprehensive measures across all sectors.”

Jamali is looking at the sale of around 6,000 units per month initially, however, he is hopeful that the demand will further increase with time as the economy stabilizes.

Pollution in South Asia Increased by 10% in 10 Years, Bringing Down Life Expectancy by 5 Years

Image: The Guardian

A report by Annual Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) has revealed that Pakistan is one of the six countries that are bearing the brunt of pollution. The report was published by the Energy Policy Institute (EPIC) of Chicago University.

The other five countries included in this list besides Pakistan are India, Bangladesh Indonesia, Nigeria and China.

The report further elaborated that despite China’s great efforts, pollution still poses the biggest external threat to human health, warning that Asian and African countries are the most effected due to increasing pollution.

World Health organisation (WHO) has recommended a certain level of PM2.5 (a hazardous airborne particle) in the air, if we are able to maintain this level of pollution, the average life expectancy will increase by 2.3 years globally, adding 17.8 billion life years altogether.

According to the AQLI report, the average global pollution levels have come down in the last decade, and the major contribution has come from China. China’s “war on pollution” has successfully decreased the PM2.5 levels by 40% in the past 10 years.

AQLI’s Director, Christa Hasenkopf says, “While China has had remarkable success in its war against air pollution, the trend in other parts of the world is going in the opposite direction.”

PM2.5 levels have increased by 10% in South Asia since 2013, bringing down the average life expectancy by 5 years. Also, the Southeast Asia is considered to have “unsafe levels of pollution”, cutting life expectancy by 2-3 years.

Hasenkopf added, “We haven’t turned the corner on air pollution yet, though China’s example shows us that the issue is a tractable one.”

Imported Wheat Sets Sail for Karachi Amid Flour Shortage

The voyage of the inaugural vessel, loaded with an impressive cargo of 55,000 tons of wheat, has commenced its journey from Russia. All indications point to its arrival at Karachi Port, Pakistan, on September 8th, swiftly followed by a second vessel scheduled to make port in Pakistan on September 14th.

Navigating the Wheat Importation Challenge Amid Flour Shortages

In the backdrop of this maritime activity, importers have confirmed their procurement of a substantial 400,000 tons of wheat. The private sector, in an effort to remedy the pressing wheat scarcity primarily affecting Karachi, is gearing up for the import of a substantial 0.9 million tons. This proactive measure comes as a relief to local flour mills grappling with the challenge of securing sufficient wheat supplies. Expectations loom large that local wheat prices will continue their ascent in the imminent days and weeks.

It’s worth noting a peculiar development on the news front. Local media had previously disseminated reports regarding the arrival of a Russian vessel laden with privately imported wheat. However, a closer examination reveals these reports to be somewhat inaccurate. Insights from conversations with members of the trading community suggest that this misinformation was strategically propagated to stabilize market prices. Despite these efforts, as previously reported by ProPakistani, the strategy proved largely ineffective.

Importantly, this latest influx of imported wheat is unlikely to exert significant influence on wheat flour prices, which have surged by a staggering 130 percent year-on-year. The substantial deficit in flour mill stocks far surpasses the quantity of wheat slated for government importation.

A shadow of suspicion hangs over several flour mills, implicating them in wheat speculation, and they have resorted to concerted efforts to undermine private wheat imports. However, these efforts have failed to bear fruit. The interim federal government has displayed unwavering resolve, steadfastly resisting all forms of pressure and ill-advised counsel. Its commitment remains resolute in ensuring food security for the nation’s citizens.

In a concurrent development, law enforcement agencies have initiated the compilation of a fresh roster of flour mill owners and hoarders from Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalnagar, known to be involved in illicit wheat trafficking. This action represents a decisive step towards addressing the grave issue of illegal wheat manipulation and maintaining a fair and equitable wheat supply chain.

Huge setback for India ahead of Asia Cup 2023

In a setback for the Indian cricket team, KL Rahul is set to miss the first two matches of the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 due to a lingering fitness concern. Rahul Dravid, the head coach, officially confirmed this news during a recent press conference, revealing that the right-handed batsman won’t be available for the opening clashes against Pakistan and Nepal.

The 31-year-old opener had been sidelined from competitive cricket since May due to a thigh injury but had made a successful recovery and was included in the Asia Cup squad. However, while undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, he encountered an unrelated fitness issue, delaying his return to the field.

“KL Rahul has had a productive week with us, showing promising progress. However, he’ll be unavailable for the initial part of our journey in Kandy,” remarked Dravid, who also expressed optimism about Rahul’s swift recovery and return to action.

In Rahul’s absence, Ishan Kishan is expected to take on wicket-keeping responsibilities during the group-stage matches, scheduled for September 2nd and 4th in Sri Lanka. Additionally, India has a contingency plan with the inclusion of Sanju Samson, who will accompany the team as a reserve player for this prestigious tournament, providing a reliable backup option behind the stumps.

Indus Motor Company Profit Drops by 39% Despite Investments In High-return Schemes

The US SUN

The assembler of Toyota vehicles in Pakistan, Indus Motor Company (IMC), announced a 39% decline in net profit for the current financial year that ended on June 30, 2023.

The company believes diminishing demand of four-wheelers, rupee devaluation and skyrocketing cost of car financing are responsible for the decline in profit.

The company’s profit after 39% drop stands at Rs9.66 billion as compared to Rs 15.80 billion in the financial year 2022 (FY22).

According to the IMC’s profit and loss accounts, this loss could have been more had the company not take timely smart investment decisions. The investment in high-return schemes acted as a buffer against the dwindling demand of vehicles and slowed production.

The per share earnings of IMC is recorded at Rs 122.96 for the FY23 as compared to Rs 201.04 last year. Despite the loss, the company has announced a cash dividend of Rs 29 per share this year.

The IMC issued a press release stating that the sales of completely built units (CBU) and completely knocked down units (CKD) was dropped by 58%, and only 31,602 units were sold in FY23 as compared to the sale of 72,438 units last year.

Ali Asghar Jamali, IMC CEO said,“The automobile industry in Pakistan is facing the worst-ever economic downturn due to prevailing circumstances. Global disruptions, import restrictions on CKD kits, and demand contraction have led to plant closures, impacting industry employment.”

The people of Narowal also gathered to protest against the inflated electricity bills. Similar protests were also seen in different parts of Punjab including Multan, Faisalabad, Taunsa, Vehari, Rahim Yar Khan and Attock. The residents of Rehmanpura gathered in front of the Lahore Electricity Supply Company (LESCO) office and recorded their protest.

In Rawalpindi, the traders and business community protested against the escalated bills and expressed their concerns.

The people of Peshawar also protested against the overbilling and gathered in different areas including Kohat Road, Asia gate, and Ring Road.

People in Lower Dir, Nowshera, Swabi and other cities of KPK also seemed unhappy with the hyped up electricity tariff and protested.

Karachi’s traffic was also disturbed last night due to an ongoing protest at Aisha Manzil against the unnecessary hike in electricity charges.

RCCI Sets Deadline for Electricity Price Rollback Demand

The Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) has issued a stern ultimatum to the government, setting a deadline of August 29 for the withdrawal of the recent electricity price hike.

In a press conference held on Saturday, Saqib Rafiq, the President of RCCI, declared that if the government fails to heed their demand and roll back the price increase, traders are prepared to launch a protest rally from the chamber to Kachehri Chowk.

Rafiq expressed the grave concerns of traders, emphasizing their inability to remain competitive in the international market under the current electricity pricing structure. He lamented the challenging business environment, citing the unfortunate closure of numerous businesses.

The RCCI President underscored the importance of the government exploring alternative sources of energy to facilitate affordable electricity rates. Such an initiative, he argued, would not only benefit businesses but also foster a conducive investment climate, thereby enhancing tax collection.

Rafiq further highlighted a series of pressing issues that warrant immediate government attention. These include the escalating interest rates, the uncertain status of the US dollar, soaring fuel costs, higher tariffs for gas and power, and unrelenting food inflation. He urged the government to prioritize addressing these critical concerns to stabilize the economic landscape.

Punjab Governor Introduces Comprehensive Framework to Address Sexual Harassment in Universities

Punjab Governor Introduces Comprehensive Framework to Address Sexual Harassment in Universities

Punjab’s Governor, Baligh-ur-Rehman, has taken a resolute stride towards tackling incidents of sexual harassment in universities. In an official announcement, the governor has set up a comprehensive framework to proactively address and thwart cases of sexual harassment, prompted by recent occurrences within educational institutions.

The directive mandates universities to adopt specific measures aimed at fostering a safer environment for all members of their academic communities. The governor underlines the indispensability of shielding against sexual harassment to uphold an environment conducive to both learning and personal development. He unequivocally declares a zero-tolerance stance towards any form of sexual harassment.

The prescribed measures encompass the establishment of Inquiry Committees tasked with investigating complaints, ensuring expedited resolutions within 45 days, and appointing a senior female faculty member as a designated contact person to receive all reports. This contact person, positioned independently from the university’s management hierarchy, will guarantee the utmost confidentiality and privacy during complaint handling.

Moreover, the policy is to be integrated into the university’s code of conduct, translated into local languages, promoted through various awareness channels, and enforced as a ‘Code of Conduct’ that unambiguously outlines unacceptable behaviors and their consequences.

Universities are strongly encouraged to institute a transparent and easily accessible ‘Complaint Mechanism,’ educating both students and staff about identifying, preventing, and responding to sexual harassment. The directive also underscores the significance of establishing a robust monitoring and evaluation system, ensuring a continuous enhancement of the responsiveness of this mechanism.

The new visa is a sign of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to attracting foreign talent and supporting its economic development.

Another mishandling by Pakistan: IMF likely to be furious

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is poised to scrutinize Pakistan’s government for its delay in notifying the gas tariff increase approved by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) in June. This scrutiny comes as part of the upcoming review under the IMF’s $3 billion Standby Arrangement, with a $1 billion tranche due in November. To meet IMF requirements, the government may have no choice but to implement a gas rate hike of up to 50 percent.

Currently, both of Pakistan’s gas companies are grappling with a substantial deficit of Rs. 657.766 billion. The IMF is likely to raise this issue during pre-review discussions if the tariff increase is not officially communicated.

In June 2023, OGRA had announced a 50 percent increase (Rs. 415.11 per MMBTU) for Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) customers and a 45 percent increase (Rs. 417.23 per MMBTU) for Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) customers for the fiscal year 2023-24.

Sui Northern still carries a shortfall of Rs. 560.378 billion for the financial year 2022-23, while Sui Southern faces a deficit of Rs. 97.388 billion. Combined, both companies have a total deficit of Rs. 657.766 billion.

The IMF is urging the government to develop a strategy to tackle the Rs. 1.7 trillion circular debt in the oil and gas sector, with Rs. 1.3 trillion of it attributable to the gas sector.

If implemented, this strategy would allow the federal government to inject approximately Rs. 414 billion into SNGPL and SSGCL to clear outstanding dues with gas producers such as OGDCL, PPL, and GHPL. Additionally, OGDCL and PPL are expected to contribute Rs. 56 billion and may consider issuing investment bonds.

Gas Shortage in Karachi: CNG and Industries Face Supply Interruptions

Due to a critical shortage of natural gas in Karachi, the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has made the tough decision to halt gas supply to CNG stations for a duration of 72 hours, and to industries for 48 hours.

As per the SSGC spokesperson, gas supply to all CNG stations within Sindh province, including RLNG pumps, will be suspended for 72 hours starting from 8:00 AM on Saturday, August 26, until 8:00 AM on Monday, August 28. This measure is aimed at ensuring the general public’s gas needs are met during this period.

In addition to this, gas supply to all general industries will also be temporarily ceased for the next 48 hours, starting from 8:00 AM on August 26. While the exact cause for this gas shutdown hasn’t been disclosed by the company, the prevailing gas shortage is the most likely reason.

On a related note, Pakistan and Turkmenistan recently joined forces to expedite progress on the TAPI gas pipeline project. This development was the outcome of a meeting between Turkmenistan’s Ambassador, Atadjan Movlamov, and Pakistan’s Interim Federal Minister for Energy, Muhammad Ali.

The minister emphasized the vital role of gas in Pakistan’s economy and stressed the need for assertive approaches in addressing the country’s escalating energy demands.

2,227 Children Became Victims of Sexual Abuse in Pakistan in First Six Months of 2023, Sahil Reports

Sexual Abuse in Pakistan

According to the report, more than 2,227 children became victims of sexual abuse in Pakistan in the first six months of 2023. The report was issued on Thursday by Sahil, a non-profit organisation, which is working for the protection of children.

The report revealed that on average daily 12 children suffered from sexual abuse in Pakistan from January to June 2203.

The document states that the number of female and male children who suffered from sexual abuse during this period were 1,207 and 1,020 respectively.

Sahil relied on the media reports to compile this data on child molestation, however, it is feared that the actual number of cases is much higher as many of the cases are never reported.

According to Sahil, the number of reported child abuse cases were 4,253 last year and 2,123 of these cases were of sexual in nature.

The provincial coordinator Sahil, Ansar Sajjad Bhatti, told the media that four child marriage cases have been reported in the first half of 2023 while a minor girl child was abducted during the same period. He further added that 22 boys and girls were subjected to sexual abuse in the madrassas.

Bhatti said that children in Pakistan were molested in different places including cars, clinics, hospitals, hotels, factories, prisons, wedding halls, cemeteries, and police stations.

The Sahil representative said that more than 1,648 sexual abuse cases were reported in Punjab, 314 in Sindh, 161 in Islamabad, 24 in Balochistan, four in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and four in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Furthermore, Sahil reported 53 incidents of child pornography and 963 incidents where the children’s life was put in danger. 760 of these children died, 265 drowned, 148 were murdered and 144 lost their lives in different accidents.

Sahil suggests setting up a child safety cell and running awareness campaigns to protect children from such incidents in the future.
