US Supreme Court Allows Businesses to Discriminate Against LGBTQ Customers

In a recent ruling, the United States Supreme Court has granted certain businesses the right to refuse services for same-sex weddings, raising concerns about its impact on LGBTQ rights and civil rights laws. The 6-3 decision, supported by the conservative majority, favored web designer Lorie Smith’s plea for an exemption from Colorado’s anti-discrimination law based on sexual orientation and other factors.

Lorie Smith, an evangelical Christian opposed to same-sex marriage, filed a lawsuit in 2016, fearing potential consequences under Colorado’s public accommodations law if she declined to provide services for gay weddings. Her legal team argued that being compelled to participate in a same-sex wedding would contradict her Christian beliefs and violate her freedom of speech protected by the First Amendment.

Advocates for LGBTQ rights argue that Smith’s position infringes on the rights of LGBTQ individuals to access goods and services without facing discrimination. Civil rights groups and legal scholars cautioned about potential ripple effects of this ruling, as it could undermine existing laws aimed at preventing various forms of discrimination. Many US states have public accommodations laws prohibiting businesses from denying goods or services based on characteristics like race, gender, sexual orientation, and religion. Colorado’s Anti-Discrimination Act, for instance, forbids businesses from discrimination on these grounds.

President Joe Biden’s administration supported Colorado in the case, arguing that Smith’s request for exemption went too far, potentially allowing refusal of any wedding-related services for same-sex couples. President Biden expressed deep concern, fearing that the decision could invite more discrimination against LGBTQ+ Americans and weaken longstanding laws protecting everyone from discrimination in public accommodations.

The ruling drew criticism from the American Civil Liberties Union and LGBTQ civil rights group Human Rights Campaign, who highlighted its potential negative consequences for civil rights laws and the inclusivity of commercial spaces. Conversely, the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative religious rights group representing Lorie Smith, celebrated the decision as a victory for free speech rights.

This ruling comes shortly after another case where the Supreme Court unanimously supported employees’ right to obtain accommodations for religious practices at work. In that case, a former mail carrier accused the Postal Service of discrimination for disciplining him after he refused to work on Sundays.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar conducted a press briefing today to announce the recent $3 billion staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Expressing gratitude to the IMF, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif acknowledged the sacrifices made by Pakistan to avoid default. He revealed that Pakistan has secured $4 billion, surpassing the IMF’s identified $2 billion gap. During a visit to Paris, discussions with the President of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) resulted in a commitment of $1 billion from the IDB, providing much-needed support.

A staff-level agreement has been reached, and the Executive Board meeting is scheduled for July 12. Pakistan will receive $3 billion under this nine-month program, with installments commencing after the board meeting. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif appreciated the efforts of the IMF, Ishaq Dar, and their team, but emphasized that this should be a moment of concern rather than pride.

He highlighted the need to break free from the cycle of loans and mentioned the progress made under Nawaz Sharif’s leadership until 2018, including the end of load shedding and the swift progress of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects. The Prime Minister criticized the previous government for mismanagement, corruption, and pocket-filling at the expense of the people. He expressed hope that this would be the last IMF program for Pakistan and urged the public to pray for economic stability.

The Prime Minister announced an agreement with Azerbaijan for liquefied natural gas (LNG), showcasing efforts to diversify partnerships and boost economic growth. He acknowledged the support of friendly countries, including China, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the Islamic Development Bank. By securing financial assistance, Pakistan has avoided the threat of default.

Minister of Finance, Ishaq Dar, mentioned the importance of securing $2.5 billion to avoid financial imbalances and highlighted Pakistan’s substantial assets. He assured that Pakistan is not a beggar but a proud member of the IMF. Minister Dar unveiled a roadmap to halt economic decline and affirmed that Pakistan will not face default. Progress has already been made in repaying commercial bank loans and increasing reserves. The focus now is on achieving economic stability and financial integrity.

Armed Robberies Claim Lives of Pakistani Canadian and Businessman

Two tragic incidents unfolded in Karachi on Tuesday, resulting in the loss of lives of a Pakistani Canadian citizen and a businessman at the hands of armed robbers. The incidents occurred in the Nazimabad and Orangi Town areas, where the victims were fatally shot while resisting robbery attempts.

The local police have faced criticism for their inability to curb street crime, with the death toll from firing during robberies reaching a concerning 70 in just six months this year.

In the first incident near the Board Office in Nazimabad, Amin Alvi, the Pakistani Canadian citizen, was shopping with four street children when the robbery took place. Alvi had visited a bank and a money exchange before the tragic event occurred. According to one of the accompanying children’s account, two men on a motorcycle approached their car. One of the men demanded Alvi’s cash and valuables, leading to a confrontation where Alvi was shot by the assailant, who then fled with his accomplice.

Shockingly, no passing drivers offered assistance as Alvi lay on the road for several minutes. It was only when a rickshaw driver arrived that he was rushed to the hospital. Despite receiving medical treatment, Alvi couldn’t survive his injuries. The police revealed that Alvi had retired from a foreign airline and made periodic visits to Karachi.

These incidents highlight the urgent need for effective measures to address street crime and improve public safety in Karachi.

This Country’s Citizens Become a Year Or Two Younger As They Ditch Traditional Way of Counting Age

Citizens of South Korea became a year or two younger when the country decided to replace the traditional way of counting age with the international method.

According to the traditional method of counting age, a child is considered to be a year old on their birth and a year is added to their age on every January 1.

Though the country announced to use the modern methodology for counting age in 1960s, still many people were using the old ways.

In December , a new law was passed in South Korea to discontinue the traditional method and adopt the new one which is in accordance with the international standards.

“We expect legal disputes, complaints and social confusion that have been caused over how to calculate ages will be greatly reduced,” said the Minister of Government Legislation Lee Wan-kyu.

A citizen said, “I was about to turn 30 next year (under the traditional Korean age system) but now I have some more time earned and I love it.” He added, “It’s just great to feel like getting younger.”

This remarkable discovery marks the first instance of identifying a black hole of this magnitude using gravitational lensing. Majority of Women Who Choose to Freeze Their Eggs Don’t Even Use Them: Study

Scientists found out that only a quarter of women who froze their eggs between 2009-2019 came back for fertility treatment. More than 843 women were observed as part of the study.

It is seen that the number of women choosing to freeze their eggs has increased recently. Though the physical and financial cost of freezing eggs is a lot, women are still going for it. However, sadly, not all of these women are using the frozen eggs. Some of them did not even return to the facility after their eggs are frozen.

The study was conducted by a team from Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel, a university hospital in Belgium, who tracked 843 women who opted to freeze their eggs between 2009 and 2019. The study reveals that the average age of these women at that time was 36 and they were mostly single.

The study further suggests that by May 2022, only 27 per cent, a quarter of the women came back for further procedure. Those who returned for fertility treatment were around 40 and were in a relationship. Around 48% of these women used their frozen eggs via insemination whole the others opted for other treatments like IVF using fresh eggs.

Though freezing eggs to have children later in life can be a good option for women of older ages, it’s an ‘expensive decision.’

Dr Ezgi Darici in her research submitted to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in Copenhagen said: ‘Increasing numbers of women are choosing to freeze their eggs in the hope that it will enable them to have children later in life.’ She added, ‘Among those who did return for treatment, around half used their frozen eggs. These were older women on average.’

New income tax rates for salaried class

The amended Finance Bill 2023 has introduced new income tax slabs for the salaried class, bringing changes to the tax rates that will come into effect from July 1, 2023. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) recently released the revised Finance Bill, outlining the updated tax brackets.

For individuals with an annual taxable income exceeding Rs. 2,400,000 but not exceeding Rs. 3,600,000, the applicable tax rate will be Rs. 165,000 plus 22.5% of the amount exceeding Rs. 2,400,000, according to the amended Finance Bill 2023.

There will be no changes in the income tax rates for salaried individuals with a taxable income exceeding Rs. 1,200,000 but not exceeding Rs. 2,400,000. The tax rate will remain at Rs. 15,000 plus 12.5% of the amount exceeding Rs. 1,200,000.

Under the new tax slab, individuals with a taxable income exceeding Rs. 3,600,000 but not exceeding Rs. 6,000,000 will face a tax rate of Rs. 405,000 plus 27.5% of the amount exceeding Rs. 3,600,000.

Moreover, the revised income tax slabs reveal that for individuals whose taxable income surpasses Rs. 6,000,000, the tax rate will be Rs. 1,095,000 plus 35% of the amount exceeding Rs. 6,000,000.

These new income tax slabs aim to streamline the tax system for the salaried class and ensure fair taxation based on income levels. Individuals falling within these income brackets will need to comply with the updated tax rates as per the amended Finance Bill 2023.

Hajj 2023: Three Million Pilgrims Reach Mina to Start Hajj

The Hajj 2023 is officially starting from today. More than 3 million Pilgrims have reached the tent valley to start their Hajj rituals. The pilgrims will stay in Mina the whole day today and tonight. Then they will move toward Arafat to offer the Hajj prayers.

A majority of Pakistani pilgrims will reach Arafat by train as more than 63% of them have been allotted tents in the vicinity of train route.

The remaining Hujjaj will head to Arafat via a buss or on foot.

The Pakistan Hajj Mission has adviced people to follow their schedule in order to avoid any mishap due to hot weather or overcrowding.

Hajj is one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam and is mandatory for anyone who has enough money to perform it.

There are a series of rites that need to be completed in four days as part of this scared journey.

The pilgrims started reaching Mina on Sunday night. Later on, they will head to Arafat where the Hajj sermon will be delivered. It is also believed that Hazrat Muhammad PBUH also delivered his last sermon at this place.

Pakistan’s national hockey team’s Schedule for Men’s Junior World Cup 2023
