From Cricket Field to Politics? Shahid Afridi’s Potential Ministerial Role

Shahid Afridi, the former captain of Pakistan’s cricket team, is reportedly in line for a significant role as a federal minister in the interim government leading up to the upcoming general elections.

Sources suggest that Afridi’s name is being considered for a crucial portfolio within the caretaker setup, as reported by Dunya News.

The appointment comes as Senator Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar assumes the position of caretaker Prime Minister, following the conclusion of the National Assembly’s term on August 14.

Taking his oath of office on Independence Day, Kakar, a 52-year-old Senator hailing from Balochistan, is entrusted with the responsibility of guiding the nation through the electoral process.

This move highlights the potential incorporation of Afridi’s well-known public figure status into the political landscape during this transitional phase.

Gunmen Attacking Chinese Convoy in Balochistan Neutralized by Pakistani Security Forces

Pakistani security forces successfully eliminated two assailants who targeted a convoy of Chinese workers in Balochistan province’s southwestern region. Gawadar Deputy Superintendent of Police Chakar Baloch confirmed the operation’s success, with all members of the Chinese convoy and involved security personnel emerging unscathed from the exchange of gunfire.

The separatist group Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), proscribed in Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the assault on a convoy carrying Chinese engineers in Gawadar, a strategic city where China is actively constructing a seaport. The BLA’s “Majeed Brigade” conducted the attack, underscoring the ongoing security challenges in the region.

Responding to the threat, Pakistan’s military swiftly launched an operation in response to verified reports of terrorists’ presence in the area. The operation’s resolute execution underscores the nation’s commitment to safeguarding both its citizens and foreign workers within its borders.

Suspension of ‘Cheap’ Russian Crude Import Due to Imbalanced Refining Process

Suspension of 'Cheap' Russian Crude Import Due to Imbalanced Refining Process

Recent developments reveal a pause in the import of what was once touted as ‘inexpensive’ Russian crude oil, triggered by a refining process that yielded a higher proportion of furnace oil compared to petrol. A trusted National Daily presents insights from sources indicating that Pakistan Refinery Limited (PRL) has declined further processing of Russian crude, citing significant disparities in the production of petrol from Russian versus Arabian crude.

Reportedly, the much-anticipated cost savings of importing Russian crude have been marred by unfavorable outcomes. The quantity of furnace oil generated from the Russian variant exceeds expectations, tempering the perceived advantages. Additionally, the production of kerosene and jet fuel from Russian crude has demonstrated lower yields, further eroding the anticipated benefits.

In late June, Pakistan received its second cargo of Russian crude, amounting to 55,000 tons. This followed the arrival of the inaugural 45,000-ton shipment on June 12, marking the initiation of Pakistan’s Russian crude imports.

Initially hailed as a transformative move that would drive down domestic petroleum product prices, the reality has cast a shadow over these optimistic expectations. The diminished production of petrol from the Russian crude has dampened the envisioned benefits, prompting a reconsideration of the imported resource.

While the report posits that the feasibility of Russian crude could potentially materialize if its prices remain stable in the face of rising global oil prices, such a scenario appears less plausible. The complex dynamics of the global oil market cast uncertainty on this prospect.

Pakistan is gearing up for a crucial economic review as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) prepares to send its delegation in November to evaluate the progress of the $3 billion stand-by arrangement (SBA). This anticipated review has significant implications, with Pakistan potentially accessing a tranche of $700 million contingent on a successful outcome.

In this forthcoming assessment, the focus will be squarely on Pakistan’s economic performance and the attainment of goals established within the context of the stand-by agreement for the July to September 2023 period.

A comprehensive overview of Pakistan’s endeavors to tackle the persistent issue of circular debt in the energy sector will be presented to the IMF delegation. Additionally, updates will be provided on the strategic revenue measures implemented to meet the ambitious tax collection target set for the current fiscal year (FY24). The discourse will also encompass the evaluation of both monetary and fiscal policies.

Another pivotal aspect of the review will be Pakistan’s progress toward achieving the petroleum levy collection target of Rs. 859 billion for FY24. The IMF delegation will be presented with the latest collection figures up until September, shedding light on the country’s trajectory.

This development follows the approval by the IMF Executive Board back in July, which sanctioned a 9-month stand-by arrangement for Pakistan, amounting to SDR2,250 million (approximately $3 billion). This measure was intended to provide support to Pakistan’s economic stabilization program. The immediate outcome of the approval was the disbursement of SDR894 million (around $1.2 billion), with the remaining funds scheduled for phased distribution over the course of the program, contingent upon two quarterly reviews.

41 Million-Year-Old Whale Remains Unearthed in Egypt Desert

Egypt Desert

Paleontologists digging in an Egyptian desert have unearthed an extinct whale species that lived on the planet 41 million years ago. It is said that during that period the whale ancestors were migrating from land to the sea.

The species “Tutcetus rayanensis” is around 2.5 meters (eight feet) in length and should have weighed 187 Kg (410 pounds). It is believed that Tutcetus is the smallest Whale species that ever lived as compared to the basilosaurids, which used to live in the water exclusively.

Hesham Sallam, Team leader of this project termed it as a “remarkable discovery that documents one of the first phases of the transition to a fully aquatic lifestyle”.

According to Salam, the species Basilosaurids “developed fish-like characteristics, such as a streamlined body, a strong tail, flippers, and a tail fin, and had the last hind limbs visible enough to be recognized as ‘legs’, which were not used for walking but possibly for mating.”

Erik Seiffert from the University of Southern California and also a member of the finding team says that this particular site in Egypt, Eocene fossil sites located in Egypt’s Western Desert is very important in understanding the earlier life of whales, including their move from the land to water.

Islamabad bans airhorns on Independence Day

The use of airhorns in Islamabad on Independence Day (August 14) has been prohibited by the federal administration. Early adopters in Mexico were spotted at a café participating in a Biometric Project aiming to create a unique digital identification for everyone on the earth. The participants were getting their eyes scanned through a futuristic sphere which is outfitted with cameras.

The project is aimed at scanning the iris of human beings in order to differentiate them from online bots. Those participating in the project are being paid an incentive in the form of a cryptocurrency bonus.

This Worldcoin project of a biometric verification tool is a joint collaboration between the CEO of Open AI, Sam Altman and Tools for Humanity (a crypto-based company by Altman).

Sam Sadle who is the public policy chief at Tools for Humanity said, “The point of the iris biometrics is simply to confirm that you’re human.” He further added, “The image on default is deleted and the only piece that is kept is the iris code.

Regarding the security of this project, Agneris Sampieri, a policy analyst remarked, “They don’t clearly mention the time frame in which the biometric data they collect will be processed and retained.”

Pakistan Will Opt to Play FIFA World Cup Qualifier in Foreign Country if it Fails to Secure Home Stadium

Exploring the intricate venue selection narrative, Haroon Malik, Chairman of the PFF Normalization Committee, has delved into the scenario surrounding the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Cambodia in October.

In his dialogue with the media, Haroon conveyed that the federation’s paramount objective remains to secure a venue in Pakistan that aligns with the rigorous standards set by FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation.

Elaborating further, Haroon emphasized that the federation’s plan includes approaching the government to facilitate a suitable venue. However, in cases where this proves unfeasible, they are prepared to actively explore alternative options.

The PFF Normalization Committee stands at a pivotal juncture, as FIFA has issued a pressing demand for the venue selection to be finalized promptly for their impending World Cup Qualifier.

Media sources suggest that the PFF NC has narrowed down the potential venues to two choices: the Punjab Stadium in Lahore and the Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad, both being evaluated as plausible settings for the pivotal clash.

In addition to these considerations, the People Sports Complex and KPT Stadium in Karachi are being examined as viable alternatives for the momentous encounter scheduled for 17 October.

Recent developments highlight the PFF’s initiative in engaging with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation to potentially host the Qualifiers’ showdown, in response to FIFA’s stipulation.

As a noteworthy observation, the first leg is slated to commence in Cambodia on 12 October, while the return leg, earmarked for Pakistan, is scheduled to unfold on 17 October. With the clock ticking, the PFF strives to secure a fitting platform that encapsulates the essence of this significant event.

Pakistan Parliament Due to be Dissolved Today Ahead of Elections

Pakistan Parliament
Image: Pakistan Today

Pakistan was pushed into political turmoil ever since ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan lost office last April.

Then Shehbaz Sharif took over the office and he has been struggling to bring things back on track. He launched several initiatives and drafted strategies to recover the economy.

Today, Sharif too will go home as the parliament of Pakistan is completing its tenure and will be dissolved. Soon an interim government with qualified technocrats will come and take charge until the next elected government comes into power.

In an ideal scenario, elections should be conducted within 90 days of dissolving parliament. It is noteworthy that Imran Khan has been disqualified over the Toshakhana case and he will not be able to run for the PM office this year.
