Free Parking Across Karachi Now a Reality

In a landmark decision aimed at improving urban accessibility, the Sindh government has formally ended charged parking across all 25 towns of Karachi. The move aligns with Mayor Murtaza Wahab’s vision of making public parking free throughout the city.

The Local Government Department issued an official notification on Friday, placing a complete ban on collecting parking fees on public roads across Karachi. This marks a significant shift in urban mobility policy and offers immediate financial relief to daily commuters.

Parking Fees Restricted to Designated Facilities

According to the notification, parking charges will now only be applicable at designated parking plazas, private plots, or areas officially managed by municipal councils. This means unauthorized collection of parking fees on streets or commercial zones is now illegal.

All town municipal corporations have been directed to implement the order without delay.

Crackdown on Illegal Parking Charges

The government has launched a citywide enforcement campaign to ensure the new policy is upheld. Officials have been instructed to take strict action against individuals or groups found collecting parking charges unlawfully.

Previously, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) had already suspended fee collection on roads under its jurisdiction. The new directive now extends this to all 25 town municipal areas.

Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, has announced that Pakistan’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy—finalized after extensive consultations with local and international stakeholders—is likely to receive official approval soon. Speaking at a seminar at Quaid-i-Azam University, the minister emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to not just creating the policy, but seeing it effectively implemented across the country.

She urged all relevant sectors and experts to become proactive participants in this journey. “Our main focus now is on putting the policy into action. We want everyone to join this journey and help bring the ideas to life,” she said, highlighting the importance of collective responsibility and engagement.

Six Core Areas of the AI Policy

Shaza Fatima urged experts and organizations to review the AI policy’s six central pillars: innovation, awareness, infrastructure, AI ethics and safety, sectoral changes, and global cooperation. She welcomed constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement, noting that the Ministry remains accessible through email and social media for stakeholder input.

According to the minister, these core areas were selected to ensure a holistic and future-proof policy. The inclusion of AI ethics and safety, for example, is intended to address concerns about responsible AI development and application, while sectoral changes are expected to drive transformation in critical industries such as healthcare, agriculture, and education.

Shaza Fatima Khawaja stressed the need for national unity and teamwork to unlock the potential of AI and digital technologies. “If we work together, nothing can stop our progress.
