Parents are advised to avoid this potentially fatal mistake when putting children to sleep. According to a team at CPR Kids, parents should never put their children to sleep when they are wearing a beanie, bonnet or hoodie.
The team said, ‘Keeping your baby’s head and face uncovered during sleep reduces the risk of sudden and unexpected death, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).’
SIDS, also known as ‘cot death’ is the death of a healthy-looking child without any explainable reason.
According to the NHS, while sleeping a child’s feet should touch the end of their basket, cot, or pram. SIDS is most likely to happen to a child when they are under six months old and while they are sleeping. Around 200 babies die due to SIDs in the UK alone.
In order to reduce the chances of SIDS, the expectant mother should avoid smoking and the infant should not be exposed to smokers either. A child should also sleep in the same room as their parents for the first six months to lessen the chances of SIDS.
