Sindh Government Declares 1 Day Holiday for Schools and Colleges on Chehlum of Imam Hussain (RA)

The Sindh Education Department has officially declared a holiday for all public and private schools and colleges across the province on Monday, August 26, in observance of the Chehlum of Imam Hussain (RA). The announcement was made through a notification issued by the department’s steering committee, reflecting the importance of this solemn occasion.

Chehlum, which marks 40 days since the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his 72 companions in the historic Battle of Karbala, is a day of deep religious significance for Muslims around the world. In Pakistan, particularly in Sindh, the day is observed with profound devotion and respect, with various cities and towns hosting mourning processions to honor the sacrifices of the martyrs of Karbala.

The notification from the Sindh Education Department ensures that students, teachers, and staff will have the day off to participate in or observe the Chehlum rituals. This decision aligns with the broader efforts to maintain peace and order during the religious processions, which often see significant participation from the Shia community.

In Karachi, the province’s largest city, the main mourning procession will begin at Nishtar Park, following a traditional route through the city. The procession will conclude at the Hussainia Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar. To ensure the safety and security of the participants, local authorities have put in place comprehensive security measures, including the deployment of law enforcement personnel along the procession route.

The announcement of the holiday serves as a reminder of the cultural and religious diversity in Sindh and highlights the province’s commitment to respecting and honoring important religious events.
