Akash Ambani is emerging as one of the most prominent figures in the Reliance business empire as Jio Platforms moves toward a $3.2 billion initial public offering, putting greater attention on the next generation of the Ambani family.
The eldest son of billionaire Mukesh Ambani turned 35 on October 23 and currently serves as Managing Director of Jio Platforms as well as Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm.
His growing public role comes at an important moment for Jio, whose IPO attracted strong investor demand and was fully subscribed within two hours of opening for public bidding.
Akash Ambani Leads Jio IPO Pitch
Akash Ambani took a leading role at Jio Platforms’ recent IPO presentation, briefing investors about the company’s customer base, profitability and future strategy.
Mukesh Ambani did not attend the event, while Akash and his twin sister Isha Ambani represented the family during the presentation.
The appearance highlighted Akash’s increasing responsibility within Reliance’s telecom and digital businesses.

What Is Akash Ambani’s Current Role?
Akash Ambani has served as Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm since June 2022.
He is also Managing Director of Jio Platforms, the broader digital business that includes Reliance’s telecom, broadband, digital applications, cloud, entertainment and technology operations.
Reliance says Akash is closely involved in shaping Jio’s long-term strategy across technologies including 5G, artificial intelligence, blockchain and the Internet of Things.
Mukesh Ambani, however, remains Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries and Chairman of Jio Platforms.
Jio IPO Attracts Strong Demand
Jio Platforms’ $3.2 billion IPO has attracted significant investor interest.
Its anchor-investor book drew bids worth more than $25 billion, according to sources cited by Reuters, while institutional investors included names such as BlackRock, Fidelity and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.
The public offering was also quickly subscribed after opening to investors.
The strong demand has increased attention on Jio’s future as a separately listed company and on the executives expected to lead its next phase of growth.
More Than 500 Million Jio Customers
Jio has grown into one of the world’s largest telecom businesses by customer numbers.
Reuters reports that Jio now serves more than 533 million customers, making it second only to China Mobile among telecom operators measured by subscribers within a single country.
Telecommunications remains the foundation of Jio’s business, contributing nearly 90% of its annual revenue.
However, Akash Ambani has increasingly presented Jio as a broader technology company rather than simply a mobile network operator.
Jio Pushes Into AI and Digital Services
Akash has emphasized Jio’s expansion into areas such as artificial intelligence, digital services and connected devices.
At the recent IPO presentation, he highlighted plans for AI-powered services including call summaries and transcription in multiple Indian languages.
Jio’s strategy is increasingly focused on using its massive telecom subscriber base to sell additional digital and technology services.
Akash Ambani and Reliance Succession
Akash’s appointment as chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm in 2022 was widely viewed as an important step in the Ambani family’s long-term succession planning.
Mukesh Ambani had stepped down as director of the telecom subsidiary at the time, handing leadership of that business to his son.
However, it would be premature to describe Akash as the sole successor to the entire Reliance empire.
Mukesh Ambani remains in charge of Reliance Industries, while Akash, Isha and Anant Ambani all hold senior roles across different parts of the family-controlled group.
Who Is Akash Ambani?
Akash Ambani studied economics at Brown University in the United States before joining the Reliance group.
He has been closely involved with Jio since its early development and has played roles in product strategy, technology and investor relationships.
He is also involved in the management of the Ambani family’s Indian Premier League cricket franchise, Mumbai Indians.
Akash married Shloka Mehta in 2019 and has two children.
Akash Ambani’s growing visibility comes at a defining moment for Reliance’s digital business.
With Jio Platforms moving toward a major stock-market listing and attracting billions of dollars in investor demand, the 35-year-old executive is taking an increasingly prominent role in presenting the company’s strategy to investors and the public.
The development does not mean control of the entire Reliance empire has formally passed to him, but it does underline his expanding influence over one of the group’s most important businesses.
