Inflation to be reduced within a month, assures government

Inflation to be reduced within a month, assures government

The Ministry of Finance provided a positive outlook on inflation for July 2023, forecasting a decrease compared to June 2023. The recent reduction in administered prices of petrol and diesel is expected to result in lower domestic prices for essential items, as transportation costs are impacted. Moreover, declining international commodity prices are anticipated to counteract inflation spikes caused by domestic supply shocks. Notably, the benchmark index for international food commodity prices dropped in June 2023, primarily due to price decreases in major cereals and vegetable oils.

The report highlighted the government’s timely measures to boost the agriculture sector through the Kissan Package, leading to a better crop outlook and improved domestic supplies. Additionally, expected political stability and a stable exchange rate are likely to contribute to price stability. The projected inflation for 2023 is expected to remain in the range of 25-27 percent.

In terms of the current account deficit, the report noted a significant decline in the trade deficit, resulting in a surplus for the last two quarters of FY23, despite the decline in workers’ remittances. For FY24, the expectation is that both exports and imports will gradually increase in the upcoming months, maintaining the current account deficit within a sustainable limit.

On the fiscal front, there has been a notable improvement, with the primary deficit reducing significantly from Rs. 945.3 billion to Rs. 112 billion during Jul-May FY23. The fiscal deficit is expected to continue declining from the previous year, mainly due to a 12 percent reduction in non-markup spending.

Looking ahead to FY24, the government aims to achieve higher growth of 3.5 percent through several strategic measures, including support to the agriculture and industrial sectors, promotion of exports, encouragement of the IT sector, and resource mobilization.

Honda Atlas Cars Limited (HACL) is looking forward to a promising increase in sales in the upcoming Market Year (MY2024) compared to the previous year.

During a recent corporate briefing, HACL revealed that the banks are facilitating the auto industry by opening Letters of Credit (LCs). The company expressed optimism that if the government refrains from restricting automotive imports again, it anticipates a significant boost in sales for MY2024.

Regarding pricing, HACL mentioned that the current car prices are set based on the prevailing US Dollar exchange rate, which is currently hovering around Rs. 287. However, there might be a possibility of car prices rising further if the value of the Pakistani rupee depreciates.

In a noteworthy move towards localization, Honda emphasized the localization rates for each of its car models in Pakistan. The localization rates are as follows: Honda City at 71%, Honda Civic at 61%, Honda BR-V at 55%, and Honda HR-V at 52%. This commitment to localization demonstrates Honda’s dedication to the Pakistani market.

Furthermore, Honda disclosed its future plans to introduce hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) in Pakistan. However, specific details regarding the timeline and the models to be launched were not provided, leaving car enthusiasts eagerly waiting for more updates.

After facing challenges in the automotive industry due to import restrictions in MY2023, Honda’s sales figures were impacted. In MY2023, the company sold 25,726 cars, which was notably lower than the 37,613 cars sold in MY2022. However, with the prospect of a more favorable market environment in MY2024, Honda is determined to improve these figures and regain its momentum in the Pakistani market.

Pakistan to export cherries

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research has successfully resolved a long-pending issue of market access to China. After 12 years of waiting, Pakistani exporters can now export cherries to China from registered orchards and packhouses under the Department of Plant Protection (DPP).

This breakthrough came after the General Administration of Customs China (GACC) conducted a video inspection of quarantine procedures, as well as registered orchards, cold treatment facilities, and packhouses compliant with sanitary and phytosanitary measures. With this approval, cherries from 90 orchards and 15 cold treatment facilities & packhouses in Pakistan can be exported to China.

The Department of Plant Protection played a vital role in upgrading these facilities to meet GACC’s requirements, ensuring food safety, phytosanitary measures, quality, storage, and packaging. This achievement not only opens doors to more exports but also sets a precedent for future partnerships with international markets in Asia, Europe, the US, and Australia.

The Ministry is committed to upgrading more orchards and facilities, aligning them with global standards to secure a significant share in high-end markets worldwide. With quality standards in place, Pakistan is poised for a fruitful venture into the global cherry trade.

How Threads can stay in the market?

Meta’s Threads, once the talk of the town with its explosive start, seems to have lost its momentum, experiencing a sharp decline in engagement by a staggering 70%.

During its initial days, Threads garnered an astonishing 100 million subscribers, sparking speculations that Twitter might lose its luster in comparison. The enthusiasm surrounding the platform was palpable, but unfortunately, Threads has struggled to maintain that excitement and keep its users engaged.

The diminishing engagement can be attributed to several factors, with the lack of captivating features being a prominent one. Despite being built on Instagram’s infrastructure, users have found Threads to be somewhat lackluster and uninteresting, leading to a waning interest in the platform.

Even though Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, expressed pleasant surprise at the overwhelming response to Threads during its launch, the reality is that sustaining that level of interest has proven challenging. Nevertheless, Meta’s team remains undeterred and is committed to enhancing the platform’s fundamentals and devising strategies to retain its user base. By addressing the current shortcomings and investing in improvements, Threads aims to recapture the excitement that once surrounded its inception.

Sprinter Shocked to Learn She Has to Pay Rs. 68,000 Tax on Rs. 55,000 Gifted Spikes

Pakistani sprinter Sahib e Asra, a celebrated athlete who recently achieved remarkable success in the 34th National Games, encountered an unexpected and perplexing situation when she received a generous gift – a pair of imported spikes. Valued at Rs. 55,000, these spikes were a much-needed aid for her training, as her previous pair had worn out. However, her joy quickly turned to astonishment when she was asked to pay a staggering Rs. 68,000 in taxes on the gifted shoes.

The imposition of such a substantial tax on the spikes came as a surprise to Asra, who couldn’t fathom why the tax amount exceeded the actual cost of the shoes. Apparently, the courier company handling the shipment explained that the tax was a compulsory levy imposed by the authorities on imported items.

In a heartfelt video message, the talented athlete, who has previously won a bronze medal in the South Asian Games, made a plea to the government to address this issue. Asra expressed her gratitude for the kind gesture of receiving the spikes as a helpful gift, considering her financial constraints in acquiring new equipment. The unexpected tax burden not only caught her off guard but also posed a significant financial challenge.

She humbly requested the government to look into the matter and find a resolution, highlighting that the spiked shoes were not a luxury but a necessity for her training. As an athlete representing Pakistan on national and international platforms, she hoped that the relevant authorities would consider the implications of such taxes on athletes who rely on sponsorships and support to pursue their passion and bring glory to the country.

The incident raised concerns about the potential impact of tax policies on athletes and individuals receiving gifts or essential equipment for their professions. While taxes play a crucial role in a country’s revenue generation, striking a balance between necessary taxation and supporting aspiring athletes is essential to foster a thriving sports community.

Asra’s plea garnered attention from fellow athletes, sports enthusiasts, and citizens alike, with many expressing solidarity and urging the government to reconsider the tax policy on gifts of this nature. The hope was that a resolution could be reached, ensuring that athletes like Sahib e Asra would continue to receive support and encouragement to excel in their respective sports, bringing pride to the nation on the global stage.

Federal cabinet approves massive hike in electricity price

Federal Cabinet

In a bid to comply with IMF conditions, the federal cabinet has given the green light to yet another substantial electricity price hike.

This decision has come as a powerful shock to the masses, who are already struggling with the impact of inflation.

According to the newly approved tariff structure, the cost per unit of electricity has been raised from Rs. 3 to Rs. 7.50 per unit. This major price adjustment was passed through circulation by the federal cabinet.

Prior to this approval, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) had already granted an increase in electricity tariffs for the current financial year. The federal government had requested NEPRA’s approval for raising the basic electricity price, and the authority is expected to hold a hearing on the matter before reaching a final decision.

The proposed price adjustments vary based on consumption levels. For consumers using up to 100 units of electricity, the price increase per unit is set at Rs. 3. Those consuming 101 to 200 units will face an electricity rate of Rs. 4 per unit after the proposal’s acceptance.

Likewise, electricity consumers using 201 to 300 units will experience a proposed price hike of Rs. 5 per unit, while those consuming 301 to 400 units will see an increase of Rs. 6.50 per unit. Additionally, the government has suggested a significant increase of Rs. 7 per unit for consumers utilizing 400 to 700 units of electricity.

Once NEPRA completes its evaluation, the federal government will issue a formal notification to implement the proposed tariff hike, which was scheduled for July 1.

Mohammad Hafeez appointed chief selector of PCB

Mohammad Hafeez appointed chief selector of PCB

In a significant move, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee has entrusted the former cricketer, Mohammad Hafeez, with the crucial role of Chief Selector for the national team. The appointment is expected to take effect after the ongoing two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, as per media reports.

Earlier this month, Zaka Ashraf, the newly appointed interim Chairman of the PCB, approached Hafeez with the offer to assume the Chief Selector position. The former captain was given time to consider the responsibility due to his current commitments, but eventually, he accepted the prestigious role.

In addition to Hafeez’s appointment, rumors have been swirling about other cricketers like Younis Khan, Mohsin Khan, Saleem Yousuf, and Shoaib Akhtar being offered various positions within the PCB.

It is worth noting that the federal government officially appointed Zaka Ashraf as the chairman of the newly formed management committee, granting the committee a four-month term to oversee the affairs of the PCB.

List of Fake and Unrecognized Institutions in Pakistan

Education is the foundation of progress and personal growth. In Pakistan, the pursuit of education is embraced with enthusiasm and ambition. However, it is essential for students and parents to be vigilant and aware of the legitimacy of educational institutions they choose. To combat the prevalence of fake and unrecognized institutions, government bodies like the Higher Education Commission (HEC) have taken significant steps to expose and discourage such establishments.

A comprehensive list of fake, illegal, unlawful, and unrecognized institutions across various provinces of Pakistan has been compiled by the HEC. This crucial information serves as a safeguard against falling victim to deceptive educational ventures.

In Punjab, a significant number of institutions have been identified as non-recognized. From the All Affiliated Colleges with Global Institute in Lahore to the American International College in Faisal Town, these institutions often claim to offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs but lack official recognition.

Similar concerns exist in Sindh, where multiple campuses and affiliated colleges of institutions like Preston Institute of Management Science and Technology have been flagged as non-recognized. The Elites University, American School of International Business, and the International University of America are some of the entities on the list.

Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are also not immune to the issue. In AJK, all campuses and affiliated colleges of Al-Khair University except Bhimber have been termed non-recognized, while in KP, institutes such as Agha Computers in Abbottabad and Islamabad Computer Institute in Dargai have been identified as fake and illegal.

Additionally, institutions in the Federal Capital have not been spared. Islamabad Law College and Hunerkada College of Visual and Performing Arts are among the institutions on the list, urging students to be cautious when selecting their educational path.

The HEC has been steadfast in its mission to raise awareness about fraudulent educational setups and to promote genuine institutions that adhere to educational standards. By sharing this list, they aim to empower students and parents with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their academic journey.

China Refinances Over $600 Million Debt to Boost Pakistan’s Reserves

Here is Everything You Need to Know About the Holy Kaaba’s Kiswa Changing Ceremony

Holy Kaaba

Each year, on the first day of Muharram, Kiswa of Holy Ka’aba is changed in an intricate ceremony. The Kiswa is a cloth covering the Ka’aba which is handmade and is replaced in a ten step process.

This year, the annual ceremony was held on Wednesday which was supported by 130 manufacturers and technicians.

The Kiswa is made with raw silk and around 120 kilograms of gold and 100 kilograms of silver threads are used in its manufacturing. The raw material is woven together using the latest technology and the largest sewing machine in the world is also dedicated for this purpose.

56 different pieces of hand-embroidered Quranic verses made with gold wires on black silk cloth are then put together to form this beautiful Kiswa. Each of this piece is completed in 60-120 days as reported by a Saudi local newspaper.

A special team is assigned to look after the Kiswa replacing process.

China Refinances Over $600 Million Debt to Boost Pakistan’s Reserves

debts

The Export-Import (Exim) Bank of China has taken a significant step to bolster Pakistan’s dwindling reserves by refinancing over $600 million to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). This move comes as a positive development in the country’s efforts to strengthen its central bank’s holdings.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made the announcement during an event in Islamabad, highlighting China’s rollover of the matured debt on Monday. In his statement, the Prime Minister emphasized that while foreign exchange reserves are increasing, the goal is to achieve this through generating income rather than relying solely on loans.

Expressing confidence in the potential of Pakistan’s youth, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized their ability to excel and lead the nation in various domains, including sports, information technology, industries, and agriculture.

This latest rollover comes in addition to the $5 billion+ loans refinanced by China for Pakistan over the past three months, which have helped the country avoid default during discussions for an IMF bailout. Alongside previous disbursements of $1.2 billion from the International Monetary Fund, $1 billion from the United Arab Emirates, and $2 billion from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the inflow of funds is expected to raise SBP’s foreign exchange reserves to over $9 billion.
