“We need to put our focus on mountaineering if we want to succeed”, Says the Trendsetter Mountaineer Naila

Mountaineer Naila

Naila Kiani has been a role model for Pakistani women for her courageous mountain climbing record. She has been a trendsetter for females who have dreams and want to realize them. Naila has shown the world that nothing is impossible if you have the will to achieve it.

Naila summited eight peaks within a span of two years. However, she thinks that there is still a lack of awareness among people regarding mountaineering.

Naila said while addressing a press conference, “We need to be aware of the people of mountaineering as we have got a lot of talent in the country. We also need support from the private sector.”

Also known as the first Pakistani woman to climb Broad Peak, Naila also enjoys the record for summiting all five 8,000 metre peaks located in Pakistan.

Additionally, she has climbed all eight 8000 peaks globally and further plans to ascend all 14 top mountains in the world. She hails from Rawalpindi with no family background in mountaineering, yet she is enthusiastic about climbing mountains.

She said, “We need to put our focus on mountaineering if we want to succeed and improve in the sector. As compared to Nepal, we need to improve the mountaineering sector to benefit from it.”

Naila appreciated the efforts of the Alpine Club of Pakistan in supporting her mission and praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for nominating her for the national civil award Sitara-e-Imtiaz to recognize her achievements.

Sugar prices to further rise in Pakistan

Despite the government’s attempts to regulate sugar prices and prevent them from becoming unaffordable for the common people, the cost of sugar has already risen significantly. It is currently being sold at Rs. 160 per kg in retail, which is a substantial increase from Rs. 98 per kg in mid-April, marking a rise of over 60 percent.

The incoming caretaker setup is now taking charge, and the government has entered a regulatory mode to address the escalating sugar prices. However, both sides are attributing different reasons for the surge in sugar prices over the past three months.

To stabilize prices, the Punjab Government has introduced the Food Stuff Order 2023, empowering the district administration to procure stock from sugar mills and supply it in the market. Those found hoarding sugar may face legal action, including imprisonment for up to three years. Despite these efforts, almost a dozen sugar mills still have around 0.2 million tons of sugar they can’t retain for more than fifteen days.

Critics argue that sugar mills have earned illegal profits of up to Rs. 25 billion since April, as sugar prices cannot be increased without government approval through the Sugar Advisory Board. Furthermore, sugar already sold is not being released from warehouses and is being traded again to drive up prices.

The Minister for National Food Security & Research raised concerns about fudged export numbers, suggesting that exports may have contributed to the price hike. However, the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) contends that rising production costs, reaching Rs. 130 per kg, and a 70 percent increase in markup rates are the primary reasons behind the price surge, not exports.

Market sources believe that these regulatory actions may not have a lasting impact, and any changes in retail prices will be temporary. They predict that the government, particularly during the caretaker setup, may not have the ability to exert long-term control over sugar prices. Additionally, the recent announcement of minimum support prices for sugarcane by provincial governments may further affect market pricing.

Empowering Internet Users in Pakistan: Ensuring Transparent Internet Services, Invoice and Receipt, and Tax Compliance

Empowering Internet Users in Pakistan

In today’s digital age, internet services have become an integral part of our daily lives, transforming how we connect and engage with the world. This article is being written to raise awareness among general internet users about the importance of selecting the service provider, requesting internet invoices and receipts, verifying taxes on these invoices, and making the correct payments. By adopting these practices, we protect ourselves from potential exploitation and support the government in collecting the rightful amount of taxes. Additionally, the users need to verify the legitimacy of service providers to deter illegal operators.

Understanding the Importance of Internet Invoices and Receipts:

Invoices and receipts issued by Internet service providers serve as crucial documents for consumers and the government. Users can track their transactions by requesting and maintaining these records and ensuring they are charged fairly. Moreover, these documents are valuable during the users’ annual income tax return filing and can help avoid being overcharged.

Verifying Taxes on Internet Invoices:

It is essential for internet users to verify the taxes mentioned on their invoices to ensure accuracy, as the provincial government charges 19.5% and the federal government charges 15% on internet services. Many service providers may attempt to exploit customers by generating invoices with lower values, but charging higher amounts, which gives loss not just to the individual user, but also to the government revenue due to under-invoicing. Users can safeguard themselves from such malpractices by carefully scrutinizing the tax components. Additionally, by ensuring the correct amount of taxes is paid, we contribute to the country’s exchequer.

Making the Correct Payment:

Making the right payment for internet services is about the amount and ensuring compliance with tax regulations. Users can confidently make the correct payment by understanding the tax calculation and verifying its alignment with the invoice details. Customers should promptly contact their service providers for clarification and rectification in case of any confusion or discrepancies. Always ask for the invoices and receipts from your service provider.

Checking Service Provider Legitimacy with the Regulatory Authority:

Pakistan has witnessed an increasing number of illegal internet service providers resulting in financial losses for the government. To protect ourselves and support legal operators, verifying the legitimacy of service providers on the PTA website (list of operators) is essential. By doing so, we can make informed choices and contribute to eliminating unscrupulous service providers. Pakistan Telecom Authority has conducted successful raids in different cities to eliminate illegal service providers in collaboration with Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)

Concerns on Social Media and other Platforms:

On social media platforms like Facebook (for e.g, Pakistan Internet Service Providers Support, facebook Support Group,  and WhatsApp groups, discussions about price variations in the name of taxes are prevalent. While some variations may be legitimate due to regional differences or specific tax policies, it is crucial to be cautious of potential scams. By promoting awareness and knowledge about tax regulations, we can empower ourselves and others to identify and report suspicious activities.

Conclusion:

As responsible internet users in Pakistan, it is our duty to be vigilant and proactive in ensuring transparent internet services and tax compliance. By requesting internet invoices and receipts, verifying taxes, and making the correct payments, we contribute to the government’s revenue collection efforts and the overall development of our nation. Additionally, by checking the legitimacy of service providers on the Pakistan Telecom Authority website, we foster a trustworthy digital environment for everyone. Let us work together to protect our interests, support legitimate operators, and uphold the integrity of our nation’s digital landscape.

Pakistan hockey team faces setback ahead of Asian Champions Trophy in India

Pakistan hockey team faces setback ahead of Asian Champions Trophy in India

Shahnaz Sheikh, recently appointed as the hockey team’s consultant, unfortunately faces an obstacle as he will be unable to join the squad for the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy in India. The visa application process for Sheikh was initiated after the rest of the team’s, resulting in a logistical challenge that the team management and PHF could not resolve in time. This setback comes just as the national team is preparing to depart for India, where Sheikh was expected to play a vital role in guiding and boosting the players’ performance during the tournament.

The absence of Sheikh is undoubtedly disappointing for the players, who were eagerly looking forward to benefiting from his expertise and experience in their quest for success in the championship. Appointed by the Pakistan Hockey Federation earlier this month, the former Olympian was tasked with revitalizing the team’s performance, and his absence at this crucial time is a missed opportunity for the players to tap into his knowledge.

With the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy scheduled to kick off soon in India, Pakistan’s campaign begins on August 2 against Malaysia at Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai. Following that, they will face Korea on August 3, and then take on Japan and China on August 6 and 7, respectively, at the same venue.

The much-anticipated clash against arch-rivals India will be their last group-stage match, with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals. As the team prepares for these challenging encounters, they will undoubtedly feel the absence of Sheikh’s valuable guidance and support. Nevertheless, the players will strive to give their best and make their mark in this prestigious tournament.

Islamabad’s Hiking Trails Closed for Public Temporarily

Islamabad’s Hiking Trails Closed for Public Temporarily

In a precautionary move, the Islamabad administration has announced the temporary closure of hiking trails 3 and 5 for the public from July 30 to August 1. The decision has been taken to ensure the utmost security of a visiting high-level foreign delegation, including Chinese Vice Premier, He Lifeng, who will be arriving as President Xi Jinping’s Special Envoy.

The Office of District Magistrate Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) issued a late notification on July 29, informing the public about the closure of these popular hiking trails, known for attracting both locals and tourists.

Although the closure may cause inconvenience to the public, the administration emphasizes the significance of maintaining a secure environment during crucial diplomatic visits. Hosting such esteemed foreign delegates demands heightened security measures and restricted access to specific areas to guarantee their safety and smooth proceedings during their stay.

By temporarily limiting access to these hiking trails, the authorities aim to prevent any potential untoward incidents and ensure a successful and safe visit for the esteemed delegation.

In light of the visit, the government had previously declared Monday and Tuesday as local holidays in the federal capital. This step showcases the importance placed on providing a secure and suitable environment for the high-profile foreign delegate’s visit.
