Following the devaluation of the rupee against the dollar, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar Sunday announced that the price of petrol and diesel will go up by Rs35 from 11am today.

Meanwhile, the prices of kerosene oil and light diesel oil have been increased by Rs18 in Pakistan.

The increase comes after the rupee hit a historic low against the dollar following the removal of the unofficial cap on the greenback.

Pakistan has asked for the US help to revive the IMF program to assist soft landing of its economy post devastating floods and economic crisis.

A meeting was held on Wednesday in which Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s Finance Minister, requested a US Delegation to convince the multilateral lender in the Washington DC to be a little lenient towards Pakistan.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Department of Treasury, Ropert Kaproth was leading the delegation.

The sources revealed that Dar has communicated to the visitors that Pakistan would fulfil all its international commitments and is also about to take some “very tough decisions.” The decisions will include a rise in the prices of electricity and gas amongst other measures “even beyond the call of IMF” to bring the country’s economy back on the track.

Dar added that Pakistan needs a breathing space after its agriculture and industry has faced the most challenging time post the natural calamities.

While telling about the current challenges Pakistan is facing, the Finance Minister said that in addition to the domestic issues, smuggling of foreign currencies also put a lot of pressure on Rupee.

Dar also said that his government was handed over a weak economy and they are still struggling with it.

“Despite challenging economic conditions, the government is focusing on fixing things in right direction and introducing reforms in all sectors, including energy sector and capital market, to achieve economic growth and development,” it said.

Senior officials from both the countries were present in the meeting.

Data Protection Bill 2021 Will Strengthen IT & Digital Economy Says Qamar

Qamar was addressing to a conference “Accelerating Silicon Valley Technology Investment in Pakistan” organized by USAID where he assured his support to the business community and promised to facilitate trade and investment in the digital ecosystem.

The Minister further said that it is very crucial to invest in the IT sector of Pakistan to meet the country’s goals. According to him, the government is working on a strategy to increase Pakistan’s IT exports. He added that an incubation center and boot camp will be set up to utilize our digital manpower in the best possible way.

Qamar also said that the government encourages stakeholders to increase their investments in the IT sector. The government will also play its role by creating a suitable environment and providing fundings wherever needed.  

Existing IT Policies Are a Hinderance in Attracting Foreign Investment

Ahmad was addressing at ‘Digital Transformation and Cloud Migration’ where he said, “IT exports hold high potential for notable growth going forward, but the existing policies remain a hindrance.”

The sources reveal that the government is not allowing IT firms to repatriate profits to their foreign head offices due to decrease in foreign exchange reserves.

 “This is hurting foreign investors and blocking the flow of new foreign direct investment (FDIs) into the country,” added Ahmad.

It is speculated that the overall repatriated amount by all foreign firms is nearly $1 billion.

“Change management (mindset) is the biggest hurdle for digital transformation across the world, including Pakistan. Employees feel insecure about their jobs and, hence, are reluctant towards digital change,” said Ahmad.

He further added, “To address the issue, SAP is offering free-of-cost training programmes to students at schools and universities in Pakistan with effect from January 1, 2023.”

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has summoned the Punjab and Islamabad Inspector-Generals of Police (IGPs) over the failure to produce senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry in court. The summon was issued following a petition filed in the LHC challenging Chaudhry’s arrest for allegedly “threatening” the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) members and their families.

During the hearing, LHC Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh instructed the police to present Chaudhry in court by 1:30pm. However, the police refused to comply without a written order. Justice Sheikh expressed his annoyance and remarked that “the court knows how to have its orders implemented”. The judge gave the police until 6pm to produce Chaudhry and warned that he would take action if they failed to do so.

Chaudhry was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday and booked under sections 153A, 506, and 124A of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on a complaint lodged by the ECP Secretary, Umer Hameed. Chaudhry has reportedly been booked for alleged threats to the ECP and its members during a televised interview on Tuesday.

The sudden arrest of Chaudhry has angered the PTI leaders, including Hammad Azhar and Farrukh Habib, who have warned of launching countrywide protests and moving court against it. Chaudhry himself, in a short media talk earlier, said security had been placed in a way as a “terrorist” was being brought to court, adding that he was unaware of the charges leveled against him. He also urged people to take to the street against the government.

Currency Dealers Remove Cap on Rupee-Dollar Conversion

The cap will be removed from 25th January onwards and now rupee will be allowed to depreciate as per its actual value. Earlier, the currency dealers have unanimously decided to keep the rupee overvalued artificially in the open market against Dollar.

After the announcement, is it speculated that Rupee would devalue fast and will near its value in the black market i.e., Rs, 250-260 per Dollar. Rupee was overvalued artificially till Tuesday at Rs. 238/dollar.

Malik Bostan, President Exchange Companies Association of Pakistan (ECAP), held a Zoom meeting in which he said, “The Association has decided to remove the cap on the rupee-dollar exchange rate with effect from Wednesday (January 25).”

He added, “The move will help eliminate black currency markets, increase the flow of foreign currencies to the dealers and will be available to the public for international traveling, education and hospital fees.”

He further said, “People are buying dollars from the open market (at Rs238) and selling them in the black market (at Rs250-260), making it a business to mint profit.”

“The availability of market-based currency rates to individual buyers and sellers will convince them to return to open market counters. This will automatically crash the illegal markets as people feel safe working with legal entities.”

Bostan concluded, “We have informed him (Hussain) that the decision to cap the currency has negatively impacted the country under a fast-changing economic situation.”

He also hopes that this action will further strengthen the value of rupee against Dollar.

Suzuki Pakistan Increases Prices from 115,000 to 355,000

Pak Suzuki Motor Company Limited announced on Tuesday that the prices of various Suzuki models are now increased by up to Rs. 355,000.

Following the new announcement, now the price of Alto VX, VXR, VXR AGS, and AGS is Rs. 1.859 million, Rs. 2.156 million, Rs. 2.310 million, and Rs. 2.423 million after a raise of Rs. 160,000-200,00.

The Wagon R saw an increase of Rs. 208,000-257,000 after which the prices of Wagon R R VXR, R VXL, and R AGS are Rs. 2.629 million, Rs. 2.789 million and Rs. 3.059 million respectively.

The new prices for Suzuki Cultus are increased to Rs. 3.309 million, Rs. 3.339 million, and Rs. 3.356 million for Suzuki Cultus VXR, VXL and AGS.

The new prices of Suzuki GL MT, GL CVT and GLX CVT is raised to Rs3.479 million, Rs 3.742 million and Rs 4.115 million after an increase of Rs. 299,000-355,000.

The company spokesperson Mr. Shafiq Ahmed said that this is the minimal amount of increasing overheads and economic uncertainty that has been passed on to the customers.

Shadab Khan Marries Salain Mushtaq’s Daughter

The all-rounder of Pakistan Cricket Team, Shadab Khan has revealed that he is married to Saqlain Mushtaq’s daughter. Khan took to his Instagram to announce the big news.
