Pakistan has taken a major step toward improving transparency, fair competition, and consumer protection in its pharmaceutical and therapeutic goods sector. In a significant development, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) and the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at boosting coordination and enhancing regulatory oversight.

The MoU, signed in Islamabad and reported on Thursday, brings together two key federal bodies that play central roles in monitoring the pharmaceutical supply chain and ensuring competitive market behaviour. The agreement was formally inked by CCP Member Salman Amin and DRAP CEO Dr Obaidullah during a ceremony held at the CCP headquarters. Senior officials, including Member CCP Saeed Ahmed Nawaz and DRAP Director of Legal Affairs Aamar Latif, were present at the event.

The partnership establishes a structured framework for closer collaboration between the two organisations. Under this MoU, DRAP and CCP will share market data, cooperate on investigations, and jointly monitor deceptive marketing tactics, misleading therapeutic claims, and anti-competitive practices—especially in the fast-growing Over-the-Counter (OTC) and therapeutic goods segments.

The agreement also extends to digital information sharing, capacity-building initiatives, and collaborative research efforts intended to strengthen policy-making. As online advertising and e-commerce continue to reshape the pharmaceutical landscape, both institutions acknowledged the heightened risk of misleading promotions and unfair business practices.

Speaking at the ceremony, CCP Member Salman Amin emphasised that the partnership will help ensure fair market practices and protect consumers in a sector that directly affects millions. He noted that coordinated oversight has become essential as digital platforms expand their reach and influence on purchasing behaviour.

DRAP CEO Dr Obaidullah echoed this sentiment, highlighting that while federal regulators have distinct mandates, their objectives often overlap. He pointed out that price deregulation, supply-chain challenges, and the need for uninterrupted availability of essential medicines demand a unified approach. Improved cooperation, he added, will enhance regulatory outcomes and contribute to stable pricing and consistent access to medicines.

Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to putting the MoU into practical action through joint enforcement, shared monitoring, and effective market oversight. The collaboration is expected to strengthen consumer welfare and reinforce transparency across Pakistan’s pharmaceutical and health-related markets.

Alektra is offering a Rs. 50,000 discount on all variants for bookings made before November 30, 2025, making the vehicles more accessible to buyers.

Booking Process and Delivery Timeline

Customers can reserve their Metro EV by paying 20% of the total invoice value as a booking fee. The company estimates a delivery period of 90 days, ensuring buyers receive their vehicles within three months of booking.

This launch marks a significant step in Pakistan’s EV market expansion, offering budget-friendly electric mobility solutions for daily commuters.

Punjab Government Ends Nursing Students Stipends in Controversial Policy Shift

Monthly Stipend and Free Hostel Facilities Abolished for Aspiring Nurses

The Punjab government has revoked the Rs. 31,600 monthly stipend and free hostel facilities for nursing students, transferring the financial burden onto families already grappling with rising living expenses. The decision, approved by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has drawn sharp criticism for contradicting her earlier promises of accessible nursing education for women from low-income backgrounds.

The policy change was reportedly proposed by Punjab Health Minister Khwaja Salman Rafique and Health Secretary Azmat Mahmood, raising concerns that the chief minister was not fully briefed on its financial repercussions. Experts warn that the move signals a shift toward the privatization of nursing education, potentially worsening the shortage of trained nurses in Punjab’s struggling public healthcare system.

Admission Changes and Financial Barriers for Nursing Students

Under the revised policy, the University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore now oversees admissions for the four-year BSN (Generic) program, offering 3,100 morning-shift seats across 45 public-sector nursing colleges. Additionally, 1,400 evening-program seats have been introduced in 15 colleges, including major institutions affiliated with Mayo Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Jinnah Hospital, and Nishtar Hospital.

The new guidelines explicitly state: “There shall be no stipend for the students enrolled in the BSN Generic programme, in both morning and evening batches.” A senior official expressed concerns that nursing education has become “prohibitively expensive,” disproportionately affecting female students from low and middle-income households, who may now struggle to afford hostel fees or private accommodations.

Backlash Over Widening Inequality in Nursing Education

For years, government subsidies enabled economically disadvantaged women to pursue nursing as a stable career path. The withdrawal of financial support has sparked frustration among students and families, with critics arguing that the policy will deter talented candidates and worsen healthcare staffing shortages. The move also raises safety concerns, as students may be forced into unaffordable or unsafe housing near their colleges.

The new policy includes updated eligibility criteria and admission procedures, but without financial assistance, many fear it will limit opportunities for those who need them most.

King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa of Bahrain conferred the Order of Bahrain (First Class)—the highest honor granted to heads of state and government—on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a meeting in Manama. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to defense cooperation, agreeing to expand collaboration in training, logistics, manpower, and defense production. Additionally, they discussed the escalating crisis in Gaza, agreeing that lasting peace and stability were urgently needed for the region’s suffering population.

King Hamad also shared a historic connection, recalling that Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah once served as Bahrain’s legal representative. He remarked, “Muhammad Ali Jinnah remained Bahrain’s lawyer for a long time,” underscoring the deep-rooted ties between the two nations.
