Pakistani sprinter Sahib e Asra, a celebrated athlete who recently achieved remarkable success in the 34th National Games, encountered an unexpected and perplexing situation when she received a generous gift – a pair of imported spikes. Valued at Rs. 55,000, these spikes were a much-needed aid for her training, as her previous pair had worn out. However, her joy quickly turned to astonishment when she was asked to pay a staggering Rs. 68,000 in taxes on the gifted shoes.

The imposition of such a substantial tax on the spikes came as a surprise to Asra, who couldn’t fathom why the tax amount exceeded the actual cost of the shoes. Apparently, the courier company handling the shipment explained that the tax was a compulsory levy imposed by the authorities on imported items.

In a heartfelt video message, the talented athlete, who has previously won a bronze medal in the South Asian Games, made a plea to the government to address this issue. Asra expressed her gratitude for the kind gesture of receiving the spikes as a helpful gift, considering her financial constraints in acquiring new equipment. The unexpected tax burden not only caught her off guard but also posed a significant financial challenge.

She humbly requested the government to look into the matter and find a resolution, highlighting that the spiked shoes were not a luxury but a necessity for her training. The Elites University, American School of International Business, and the International University of America are some of the entities on the list.

Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are also not immune to the issue. In AJK, all campuses and affiliated colleges of Al-Khair University except Bhimber have been termed non-recognized, while in KP, institutes such as Agha Computers in Abbottabad and Islamabad Computer Institute in Dargai have been identified as fake and illegal.

Additionally, institutions in the Federal Capital have not been spared. Islamabad Law College and Hunerkada College of Visual and Performing Arts are among the institutions on the list, urging students to be cautious when selecting their educational path.

The HEC has been steadfast in its mission to raise awareness about fraudulent educational setups and to promote genuine institutions that adhere to educational standards. Around 12,000 Pakistanis Imprisoned Abroad, Says Foreign Affairs Ministry

In a National Assembly session on Thursday, the foreign affairs ministry revealed that more than 12,000 Pakistanis are jailed abroad for commiting different crimes.

According to the details, most of these people are imprisoned in Arab countries including 6,200 Pakistanis in the jails of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Of these Pakistani citizens, 1,612 are imprisoned in Abu Dhabi, 1,504 in Jeddah, 1,596 in Riyadh, and 1,488 in Dubai.

TikTok Deleted More Than 11.7 Million Pakistani videos and Around 91 Million videos Globally in First Quarter

The online social media platform for video sharing, TikTok, has deleted more than 11.7 million videos by Pakistani users for violating community guidelines from January to March this year.

TikTok further said that it has removed over 91 million videos globally for the same reason. All these videos account for 0.6% of the total videos uploaded by users across the world.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, this number was 85.68 million globally and 11,707,020 videos were deleted in Pakistan for violating community guidelines.

TikTok has also removed 16.94 million accounts suspecting they belonged to users under 13 years of age. Additionally, it also got rid of 51.29 million fake accounts.

According to the report, “TikTok’s community guidelines are designed to foster a safe, inclusive, and authentic experience for all users. These policies apply to everyone and all types of content, with TikTok striving to ensure consistency and equity in their enforcement.”

It added, “TikTok utilizes a combination of innovative technology and human review to identify, assess, and take action against content that violates its community guidelines. The quarterly release of the Community Guidelines Enforcement Report provides insights into the volume and nature of removed content and accounts, ensuring full transparency.”

Each year, on the first day of Muharram, Kiswa of Holy Ka’aba is changed in an intricate ceremony. The Kiswa is a cloth covering the Ka’aba which is handmade and is replaced in a ten step process.

This year, the annual ceremony was held on Wednesday which was supported by 130 manufacturers and technicians.

The Kiswa is made with raw silk and around 120 kilograms of gold and 100 kilograms of silver threads are used in its manufacturing. The raw material is woven together using the latest technology and the largest sewing machine in the world is also dedicated for this purpose.

56 different pieces of hand-embroidered Quranic verses made with gold wires on black silk cloth are then put together to form this beautiful Kiswa. Each of this piece is completed in 60-120 days as reported by a Saudi local newspaper.

A special team is assigned to look after the Kiswa replacing process.

China Refinances Over $600 Million Debt to Boost Pakistan’s Reserves

The Export-Import (Exim) Bank of China has taken a significant step to bolster Pakistan’s dwindling reserves by refinancing over $600 million to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). This move comes as a positive development in the country’s efforts to strengthen its central bank’s holdings.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made the announcement during an event in Islamabad, highlighting China’s rollover of the matured debt on Monday. In his statement, the Prime Minister emphasized that while foreign exchange reserves are increasing, the goal is to achieve this through generating income rather than relying solely on loans.

Expressing confidence in the potential of Pakistan’s youth, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized their ability to excel and lead the nation in various domains, including sports, information technology, industries, and agriculture.

This latest rollover comes in addition to the $5 billion+ loans refinanced by China for Pakistan over the past three months, which have helped the country avoid default during discussions for an IMF bailout. Alongside previous disbursements of $1.2 billion from the International Monetary Fund, $1 billion from the United Arab Emirates, and $2 billion from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the inflow of funds is expected to raise SBP’s foreign exchange reserves to over $9 billion.

The ceremony, held at FBISE’s headquarters in Islamabad, was graced by the presence of Rana Tanveer Hussain, the Federal Education Minister, who attended as the Chief Guest for the declaration of results.

During the event, the Minister presented Detailed Marks Certificates (DMCs) to the students who achieved outstanding performances in their respective academic groups.

For students who are eagerly awaiting their results, there are several methods available to access them. Firstly, they can visit the official website of the FBISE to check their results.

Alternatively, students can retrieve their results by sending an SMS to 5050 using the format: FB(Space)[Roll Number]. Another option is to contact the FBISE directly by calling 051 9269555-59.

Furthermore, the FBISE will send the results to the candidates via SMS, provided they have provided their mobile phone numbers during the admission process.

Cristiano Ronaldo who left Manchester United for a Saudi team Al Nassr said that he is not going to go back to Europe. He also added that the Saudi league is better than Major League Soccer.

Ronaldo has signed a 2 1/2 year contract with a Saudi Arabian team Al Nas.

Ronaldo was talking after a major loss of 5-0 by his team against Celta Vigo, he said “I’m 100% sure I won’t return to any European club. I’m 38-years-old“. He also added, “European football has lost a lot of quality. The only valid one and still doing good is the (English) Premier League. They’re way ahead of all the other leagues.”

After Ronaldo, many top players are moving to Saudi Arabia. Ronaldo said, “The Saudi league is better than MLS.Now all the players are coming here … In one year, more top players will come to Saudi Arabia.”

Pakistan to Move Forward on Central Asian Regional Economic Program

Pakistan has taken a significant step by initiating a consultative process to become part of the pilot project of the Central Asian Regional Economic (CAREC) Advanced Transit System (CATS) and Information Common Exchange. The primary objective of this initiative is to streamline and harmonize transit documentation, establish a unified electronic messaging system, and introduce a modern, risk-based affordable guarantee mechanism that rewards compliant traders.

The forthcoming CATS system will be aligned with the EU’s New Computerized Transit System, enabling seamless multi-modal transit trade between Asia and Europe. A kick-off meeting involving relevant departments and ministries showcased a consensus among stakeholders in Pakistan for joining CATS.

The comprehensive goals of CATS encompass enhancing supply chain security across the CAREC region. This regional platform aims to facilitate smoother and more efficient trade flow across borders while reducing overall trade costs.

The Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program, comprising 11 countries and development partners, strives to promote development through cooperation, fostering accelerated economic growth and poverty reduction. Guided by the vision of “Good Neighbors, Good Partners, and Good Prospects,” CAREC actively facilitates practical, results-oriented regional projects and policy initiatives crucial to sustainable economic growth and shared prosperity in the region.

Since its establishment in 2001, CAREC has mobilized $41 billion in investments, contributing to the development of multimodal transportation networks, increased energy trade and security, facilitated the movement of people and goods, and laid the foundation for economic corridor development.

The expanded scope of CAREC 2030 presents opportunities for development partners to engage with the region in five operational clusters: Economic and Financial Stability, Trade, Tourism, and Economic Corridors, Infrastructure and Economic Connectivity, Agriculture and Water, and Human Development. Development partners can assume lead roles based on their comparative advantages, fostering new ideas and projects while providing policy guidance, capacity building support, and investment opportunities.

China Fears Worst Ever Draught in 60 Years As Temperature Rises to 52.2 Celsius

The temperature in a China’s northwest remote town crossed more than 52 Celsius (126 Fahrenheit) on Sunday as reported by the state media. This news made it to headlines across the globe because just six months ago, China was facing minus 50°C temperature.

The temperature in Sanbao, Xinjiang’s Turpan Depression is likely to remain the same for the next five days.

Since April, the counties in Asia are battling high temperatures due to the global climate change.

The prolonged high temperatures in China have affected China’s crops and grids. Experts also fear that this year, the high temperature may invite draught which will be the most severe in 60 years.

“Education is Priority”; Pakistan to Educate 20 Million Out-of-school Children, Says Minister

Rana Tanveer, Federal Education Minister, while attending the stone-laying ceremony of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) in Sheikhupura said that his government has been planning to make education accessible to 20 million out-of-school children in Pakistan. He said, “Education has always been our priority.”

He further said that the Vice Chancellor of AIOU Prof Dr Nasir Mahmood can play a major role in supporting this mission due to his “dynamic” leadership qualities.

Tanveer also said that the foundation of Sheikhupura Regional Campus was laid last year. “Today, we are laying the foundation stone of its academic block. It’s good to hear that Allama Iqbal Open University has been ranked first in the quality of education in Pakistan.”

Tanveer congratulated the VC and faculty members on achieving this milestone and said that AIOU is playing a good time in providing quality education l.

It was also reported that the university will allocate of Rs 2 million each year for scholarship programs and those students who secure 80% marks, their fee would be returned.

Pakistan Street Child Football Defeated Ambassadors European Union 5-0

Muslim Hands Team Maidaan organized a friendly match between Pakistan Street Child Football Team and European Union Ambassoders 11 today at Sports Complex Islamabad. Pakistan Street Child National team won the match by 5-0.

The final training camp of the Pakistan Street Child Football Team for the world’s biggest youth football league “Norway Cup” is going on in Sports Complex Islamabad, players from all over the country are participating in the camp.

On this occasion, a friendly match was organized where the Ambassador of the European Union, Donor agencies Head of the United Nations including ILO, WFP UNHCR, IOM, UNICEF, UN Pak India political Observor, IFAD, FAO, Deputy Ambassador of Germany, First Secretary of Japan, Miltary Attache of Kingdom of Saudia Arabia played under Ambassador 11 Vs Street Child Team Pakistan.

Jugnu, Prominent Pakistani Startup, Shifts Business Strategy

Jugnu, a prominent player in Pakistan’s startup ecosystem, has announced its decision to cease its core business operations in the B2B e-commerce supply chain. The company will be pivoting towards a tech-platform approach, utilizing its extensive technology and data suite to enable commerce, financial inclusion, and other enhancements. This strategic shift is motivated by the need for Jugnu to become more capital efficient and work towards profitability in light of new global macroeconomic realities. Unfortunately, this transition will have a significant impact on some teams, but Jugnu is actively reaching out to organizations to assist with the smooth transition of their talented employees.

According to a former Business Development Executive at Jugnu, the primary reason behind the closure is the withdrawal of an investor. E-commerce FMCG companies like Jugnu face challenges in achieving profitability due to low margins and high costs associated with the products they deal with. Despite its closure, Jugnu had made significant strides in digitizing and empowering small and medium-sized retailers, allowing them to gain greater control over their inventory and capital flow.

Jugnu had raised a total of $25.7 million in funding over three rounds, with the last Series A funding of $22.5 million received in March 2022. The company had successfully connected with 30,000 retailers in cities such as Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore, with plans for further expansion. However, allegations of mismanagement within the company have also surfaced, including claims of internal pilferage, financial impropriety, and logistical mismanagement.

The closure of Jugnu highlights the need for startups to focus not only on securing external investment but also on perfecting their operational management and addressing ground realities. Rethinking approaches and fostering a better understanding of the challenges faced in the market can help founders and upper management navigate potential pitfalls and ensure sustainable growth.
