FIA Cracks Down on Loan App Mafia: Nine Suspects Arrested for Blackmailing Borrowers

The Cybercrime Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against the loan app mafia, arresting nine suspects involved in blackmailing individuals who borrowed money from these apps. The operations took place in the Saidpur Road area, and the FIA has also initiated investigations against 19 additional potential culprits.

According to the FIA spokesperson, Inspector Badar Munir led the operation, which resulted in the closure of several offices belonging to the company responsible for the blackmail activities. These offices, located within a business complex, were found to have designated sections for making threatening calls to borrowers, their friends, and relatives. The arrested individuals had the daily task of making 100 to 150 calls, instilling fear and pressuring the victims.

The FIA emphasized that these loan apps were exploiting users’ personal data, such as private photos and contacts, obtained through the apps. This sensitive information was then weaponized to harass and intimidate the victims.

During the operation, the FIA seized crucial evidence, including documents, computers, laptops, and SIM cards. The arrested suspects are currently in custody, and further investigations are underway. The FIA is planning additional raids to apprehend the remaining individuals involved in the blackmailing scheme.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident reported in Karachi, a citizen filed a complaint regarding online loan app blackmail with the FIA’s Cybercrime unit in the city. However, no action has been taken thus far.

The crackdown on the loan app mafia follows a tragic incident involving the suicide of Muhammad Masood, a 42-year-old who faced overwhelming pressure and threats from these criminals. Masood initially borrowed Rs. 13,000, but with missed repayments and mounting interest, his debt escalated to over Rs. 700,000. The blackmailers threatened to leak his private data, which pushed Masood to take his own life. The FIA has since collected Masood’s mobile phone for investigation and is examining his email communications and statements from his family members.

With these arrests and ongoing investigations, the FIA is taking decisive action to curb the loan app mafia’s activities and bring justice to the victims who have suffered due to their exploitative practices.

Shaheen Shah Afridi eying his 100th Test wicket

When Shaheen Shah Afridi made his return to Test cricket for Pakistan after a year-long absence due to a knee injury, he immediately showed his prowess as a fast bowler. Opening the bowling against Sri Lanka Cricket Board XI at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Afridi exhibited searing pace, lethal swing, and impeccable lengths, resulting in three wickets for 36 runs in 12 overs, including three maidens, as Pakistan dismissed the opposition for 196 in the first innings before tea. On the final day, he continued his impressive performance with figures of 4-2-2-1, restricting the hosts to 88 for four. Afridi eventually made his comeback earlier this year, representing Lahore Qalandars in the HBL Pakistan Super League, where they successfully defended their title. Before being selected for the two Test matches, which mark Pakistan’s first matches in the third cycle of the ICC World Test Championship, Afridi played for Nottinghamshire. He ensured that he met the required workload levels to regain his rhythm.

“It takes time to adjust to red-ball cricket after playing white-ball,” Afridi acknowledged. He further added, “But the Karachi camp proved beneficial for me. Test cricket demands patience, and you have to work in partnership with fellow bowlers. Although I have played more white-ball matches over the last year, while I was playing in the United Kingdom, I bowled extra overs after matches, even with the red ball, to meet the desired workload.”

Reflecting on his injury and subsequent recovery, Afridi mentioned, “It seems like yesterday when I was injured. I will be making my Test return at the same ground where I was injured. I was talking to our physiotherapist about it. It is a matter of pride to represent Pakistan in any format, and I enjoy playing for Pakistan. I hope we will have a good beginning to this cycle of the World Test Championship and qualify for the final, something we missed out on in the last two iterations.”

Adding to the excitement of Afridi’s return is the imminent milestone of reaching 100 Test wickets, making him the 11th Pakistani pace bowler to achieve this feat. Afridi expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “There is a lot of excitement for that 100th wicket.”

However, the journey to this milestone has not been without challenges. Afridi recalled the first Test in Galle 12 months ago, where he fell just one wicket short of the century mark. “I was planning to utilize the new ball to reach that milestone, but I got injured before we could get the new ball. So, I have had to wait a lot. It is very tough to be away from cricket, but time has helped me learn a lot, which will assist me in performing well for Pakistan across formats.”

Afridi’s impressive record of 99 wickets in just 25 matches at an average of 24.86 is complemented by four five-wicket hauls and one 10-for in a match. During his rehabilitation, he also focused on strengthening his batting skills, as demonstrated by his quickfire 44 not out off just 15 balls in the HBL PSL 8 final, which played a pivotal role in Lahore Qalandars’ thrilling victory over Multan Sultans. He showcased his batting prowess on the international stage as well, smashing New Zealand’s Blair Tickner for 22 runs, including three sixes and a four, in the last over of the fourth One-Day International in Karachi, propelling Pakistan to a total of 334.

Further analysis of the data reveals that, within the first six months of this year, a total of 832,000 individuals migrated to different countries across 40 sectors in pursuit of employment opportunities.

This group of emigrants comprises individuals with exceptional education and skills. The data showcases the departure of skilled workers from various professions over the past 18 months. Notable figures include 11,000 accountants, 11,000 engineers, 4,000 doctors, 34,000 technicians, and 37,500 managers.

In the last one year, 11,000 engineers, 11,000 accountants, 34,000 technicians, 4,000 doctors, and 37,500 managers have left Pakistan.

In addition to this, 1,560 teachers, 4,000 nurses, 13,445 computer typists, 29,000 electricians, 15,000 computer operators, 8,000 agricultural experts, 1,600 draftsmen anz 24,000 supervisors have also went abroad.

Amongst these, many Pakistanis went to the Middle East including 229,000 to the United Arab Emirates, 111,000 to Oman, 90,000 to Qatar and 700,000 to Saudi Arabia.

In 2020, 225,000 people left and then in 2021, 288,000 highly trained and highly qualified went overseas for better career opportunities. However, this year, more than 1.2 million young people have left Pakistan.

Open Auction Announced for Eateries and Cafes in Capital Street Islamabad

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has made an official announcement regarding the dates for an open auction of 1-kanal plots in Shakarparian, Islamabad. These plots will be designated for eateries, cafes, and restaurants in the upcoming Capital Street Islamabad, which aims to replicate the charm of renowned walking streets like JBR Dubai, City Walk Dubai, and Nizami Street Baku.

The open auction is scheduled to take place on July 20th and 21st at the Jinnah Convention Center in Islamabad. A total of 20 plots, each measuring 500 square yards, will be available for interested participants.

To be eligible for participation in the auction, food businesses must be registered with the relevant authorities. International food businesses are also welcome to participate, provided they fulfill all the necessary formalities.

The new WhatsApp update does not allow members to see each other’s phone numbers and also hides the participant’s list. The users are also unable to react to any messages in the community to avoid revealing their numbers. Even if someone reacts to a message, their phone number would remain hidden.

Initially, the update was accessible to a limited number of people who received a message that their phone number is only visible to the contacts they have saved and the community administrators.

Hasaranga showcased exceptional bowling skills, claiming an impressive 26 wickets with an astonishing average of just 10.00. Notably, he made history by becoming the first spinner to achieve three consecutive five-wicket hauls in ODI cricket during the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe.

Expressing his delight, Hasaranga said, “I am incredibly thrilled to receive this prestigious award, especially at such a crucial moment for Sri Lanka Cricket following our qualification for the Cricket World Cup in India. It’s a great privilege and honor to be chosen as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month.”

Travis Head of Australia and Sean Williams of Zimbabwe were also strong contenders for the award in the men’s category, highlighting the fierce competition.

In the women’s category, Ashleigh Gardner secured the award after her exceptional performance in the Test match against England. She contributed significantly, taking four wickets for 99 runs in the first innings and impressive match-winning figures of eight for 66 in the second innings.

Grateful for the recognition, Gardner expressed her gratitude to those who voted for her as the ICC Women’s Player of the Month. She emphasized the significance of winning an Ashes Test match at Trent Bridge, describing it as a special moment for the team. She further acknowledged the challenges of winning a Test match overseas and expressed her excitement to be part of the record-breaking crowds witnessed during the women’s Ashes series in England.

Gardner’s achievement marks her third Player of the Month award, triumphing over Tammy Beaumont of England and Hayley Matthews of the West Indies, showcasing her consistent excellence in the sport.

Rawalpindi resident takes his life after being harassed by loan apps

In a heart-wrenching incident, a 42-year-old resident of Rawalpindi ended his life after being subjected to relentless harassment and threats from representatives of digital lending apps.

According to the deceased’s wife, her husband initially borrowed approximately Rs. 13,000 to cover the expenses of house rent and school fees for their children after losing his job. However, things took a dark turn within weeks as he started receiving menacing threats.

The woman revealed that her husband was coerced into repaying a significantly higher amount and was constantly hounded by threats. Desperate to settle his debt, the deceased resorted to taking another loan from a different digital lending app, only to find himself trapped in a vicious cycle of mounting interest.

Shockingly, the deceased was allegedly blackmailed with the threat of leaking his personal data, including contact details, photos, and videos, if he failed to repay the loan along with exorbitant interest.

Unable to bear the constant threats and blackmail inflicted by these digital lending apps, the man tragically took his own life. The Race Course police have initiated an investigation into the matter and have registered a case.

Earlier this year, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) urged borrowers to thoroughly review all terms and conditions, including interest rates, service fees, and penalties, before engaging with digital loan apps.

In May, the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) issued a warning to the public regarding the growing trend of mobile app-based micro-credit and nano-loan facilities.

Instances of harassment by digital loan apps are unfortunately not uncommon, with numerous accounts shared on social media platforms detailing threats and blackmail tactics employed by these lenders. However, this tragic incident marks a distressing first in Pakistan, where a victim of such loan apps resorted to suicide due to alleged harassment and blackmail perpetrated by these predatory lenders.

“Women on Wheels” Program to Offer 22,000 Scooties at Discounted Price

The federal government of Pakistan has launched a new initiative in which Twenty-two thousand Scooties will be offered to women at discounted prices.

The program “Prime Minister’s Women on Wheels” will give these scooties to women across Pakistan who are working or studying. The initiative is aimed at making women independent in terms of mobility and reducing their dependency on public transportation.

Nilofar Bakhtiar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Poverty Alleviation, told this news to the media and said that a budget of five billion rupees has been allocated for this program.

She further said that the allocation of these scooters will be conducted with transparency and everyone who is eligible for it will be given an equal chance.

The “Women on Wheels” program is expected to start soon and women between the ages of 18 and 55 are eligible for applying. The three-year program will be available for women earning between 30,000 to 1.5 lac rupees. This program will l facilitate women who are working, studying, are polio health workers, journalists or are contributing positively toward the economy of the country.

Bakhtiar also added that all four provinces will get 4,000 scooters each, while Islamabad will get 4,100 and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) will get 1,000 scooters.
