Highlights of Pakistan’s Budget 2023-24 presented by Ishaq Dar

Pakistan's Budget 2023-24

Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar presented the budget for the fiscal year 2023-24 (FY24) on Friday, June 9, 2023, in the National Assembly. The total outlay of the budget is Rs14.46 trillion, according to the minister. The budget is being keenly watched as the government is caught between a painful fiscal adjustment reforms agenda set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and to make room for any relief to the people ahead of a national election scheduled in early November.

Some of the highlights of Pakistan’s Budget 2023-24 are:

– The government has set a non-tax revenue target of Rs2.7 trillion and the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) tax collection target at Rs9.2 trillion.

– A sum of Rs1.8 trillion has been proposed for defense.

– The government has proposed to provide Rs5.27 trillion to the provinces in the federal budget.

– The government has targeted a GDP growth rate of 3.5% for FY24, which is higher than the projected growth rate of 0.29% for FY23.

– The government has announced a 66 percent hike in the discretionary budget of parliamentarians, a decision that might push the cash-strapped country towards a looming default due to shrinking foreign reserves.

– The government has also announced various relief measures for the public, such as increasing the minimum wage, reducing the sales tax on some items, and providing subsidies on electricity and gas bills.

The budget is expected to sail through in the absence of opposing voices, as the opposition parties have boycotted the session. However, the budget faces many challenges, such as getting the IMF on board, which is critical for Pakistan to unlock other bilateral and multilateral financing to avert a debt default.

The country missed almost all of its economic targets set in the last budget, most notably its growth target, which was initially set at 5pc, and revised down to 2pc earlier this year. Foreign exchange reserves have dipped below $4bn, according to State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) data. Inflation posted at 38% in May is the highest in Asia.

The government has no fiscal space to introduce popular measures that will win its votes or a stimulus to spur flagging economic activity, with limited avenues for raising revenue in the short term and domestic and international debt obligations continuing to mount.

Saudi Arabia to Introduce Hyperloop Train, Revolutionizing Travel Experience

The Saudi government has revealed plans to introduce a high-speed hyperloop train, lessening the travel time between Jeddah and Makkah from 50 minutes to just 5 minutes. This creative solution aims to provide a faster and more convenient conveyance option for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims and other travellers. The project will be executed in collaboration with the US-based company, Virgin Hyperloop.

The hyperloop technology forms a near-vacuum environment inside a tube, letting battery-powered pods travel at speeds of up to 1078 km/h, virtually eradicating aerodynamic drag. Travellers will undergo a comfortable and unpretentious journey despite the fantastic speeds.

Another hyperloop train in making

Also, the Saudi government is considering unfolding the hyperloop train service to connect Riyadh with Jeddah, downsizing the journey time from over 9 hours to less than an hour. Furthermore, the proposed train could cut the travel time between Riyadh and Dubai to just 51 minutes, proposing unprecedented convenience for passengers.

By clutching this groundbreaking technology, Saudi Arabia strives to become the foremost government in the world to embrace hyperloop trains, revolutionizing the way people travel and contributing to a more verdant future with zero direct emissions.

Pakistan might not host Champions Trophy 2025

Pakistan might not host Champions Trophy 2025

After the fate of Asia Cup 2023 hosting in Pakistan hangs by a rope, it is expected that the cricket-loving nation might be deprived of Champions Trophy 2025 hosting.

As per the curriculum revealed by the International Cricket Council (ICC), Pakistan was all set to host the Asia Cup 2023 and the Champions Trophy 2025. However, following India’s unwillingness to visit Pakistan, the country’s chances to embrace the multinational events after years seem to have been eradicated.

As reported by News18, Pakistan would compensate to bear the loss of Champions Trophy 2025 being moved out of Pakistan. It has also been reported that the event could instead take place in the West Indies or the United Arab Emirates.

What report says about Pakistan hosting Champions Trophy 2025?

The report reads,

“A likely three-way barter of International Cricket Council (ICC) events between 2024 and 2025 is on the cards. Word coming out of the ICC corridors is that in return for letting go of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States, these co-hosts could be compensated with another event of similar stature at a later stage,” the report stated.

“The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan could turn out to be the event that goes to the West Indies and the United States as compensation for letting go of the 2024 T20 World Cup and in return, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may get compensated monetarily for the loss.

“It is understood that right now this is merely a subject of verbal discussion between the respective cricket boards, the ICC and other stakeholders. It is also learnt that the broadcasters for the next ICC media rights cycle are in agreement with the proposed idea.”

It is unfortunate that despite prior decisions, the global cricket bodies are now going against them. While other countries will host the events as scheduled by ICC, only Pakistan is deprived of its hosting rights.

Donkey population significantly increases in Pakistan

The Pakistan Economic Survey (PES) 2022-23, released recently, reveals a slight increase in the donkey population from 5.7 million to 5.8 million during the previous fiscal year. This consistent growth in the donkey population has been observed over the past few years, with 5.5 million in 2019-20 and 5.6 million in 2020-21.

Pakistan holds the third position globally in terms of donkey populations, with Ethiopia ranking second and China leading with the largest number of donkeys. In light of this substantial donkey population, there were reports last year suggesting Pakistan’s plans to export donkeys and dogs to China.

However, officials have clarified that no decision has been made regarding the export of donkeys or dogs to any country for any purpose. They cautioned against spreading false news on this matter. China’s demand for donkeys exceeds its local supply, prompting it to import at least two million donkeys domestically and the remaining three million from other countries.

The increase in Pakistan’s donkey population showcases the significance of this animal in the country’s agricultural and transportation sectors. As the population continues to grow, it highlights the need for sustainable management and preservation of this valuable resource.

Is it justified? Unilever won Marketer of the Year award at Effies 2023

Image: Twitter

In the bustling city of Karachi, the news spread like wildfire. Unilever Pakistan had clinched the most prestigious Effie; Marketer of the Year Award. It was an honor coveted by many, a recognition that represented the pinnacle of advertising success. The company triumphed, outshining its competitors with a series of campaigns that promised to leave a lasting impact on the masses.

However, as the accolades rained down upon Unilever, a storm of discontent began to brew. Whispers of skepticism filled the air, growing louder with each passing day. Critics emerged, questioning the legitimacy of Unilever’s victory, and their skepticism found a humorous voice in the satirical columnist Ad Mad.

Unilever, the esteemed sponsor of the Effie Awards, has conveniently bestowed upon itself the prestigious title of Best Marketer of the Year. In an unsurprising turn of events, Unilever’s self-proclaimed triumph reeks of bias and self-aggrandizement. By presenting the award to themselves, they have created an atmosphere of dubious credibility, raising questions about the authenticity and integrity of the entire award ceremony.

Known for his witty and incisive commentary on the world of advertising, Ad Mad couldn’t resist poking fun at Unilever’s triumph. In his typical tongue-in-cheek style, he coined the term “Lullifever” to mock the company’s dominance, suggesting that their campaigns were so obscure that the masses remained blissfully unaware of their existence.

As Ad Mad Dude’s words gained traction, social media platforms erupted with laughter and criticism. Memes and jokes flooded timelines, with people playfully insinuating that Unilever had bought their way to victory, sarcastically questioning how money could guarantee success.

Unilever, meanwhile, remained stoic in the face of the backlash. They knew that great achievements often attracted their fair share of detractors. While the world laughed, they focused on the passion and creativity that had propelled them to the top. They took solace in the knowledge that their campaigns had resonated with the target audience, regardless of public opinion.

Time would tell whether Unilever’s triumph would stand the test of time or become a footnote in the annals of advertising history. For now, the laughter continued, as the company basked in both the glory and the ridicule that accompanied their victory. And perhaps, amidst the humor and mockery, Unilever had unknowingly sparked a debate about the nature of success in the world of marketing, igniting a fire that would burn long after the laughter faded away.

India’s train crash: People still waiting to receive dead bodies of their loved ones

India's train crash: People still waiting to receive dead bodies of their loved ones

Families of the victims involved in India’s deadliest train crash in decades have gathered at a hospital in Bhubaneswar city to identify and claim the bodies of their loved ones. The tragic incident claimed the lives of 275 people, prompting railway officials to recommend the country’s premier criminal investigating agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), to probe the crash.

Distraught relatives lined up outside the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Odisha, where survivors of the accident were also receiving treatment. The survivors, still grappling with the horrors they had experienced, struggled to comprehend the magnitude of the disaster.

Outside the hospital, large screens displayed photos of the victims, their faces disfigured and charred, making them barely recognizable. Each body was assigned a number, and families anxiously watched as the images rotated, searching for any identifying details, such as clothing, to assist in the identification process.

Many family members recounted arduous journeys spanning multiple trains, buses, or rented cars from neighboring states, desperate to locate their missing relatives. The gruesome nature of the injuries prolonged the identification process, which extended into a third day.

Out of the 275 victims, only 45 bodies have been identified so far, with 33 of them handed over to their families. Mayur Sooryavanshi, an administrator overseeing the identification process, expressed the challenges faced due to the severity of the injuries.

One grieving father, Upendra Ram, traveled approximately 850km (520 miles) from Bihar state in search of his son, Retul Ram. Exhausted from the day-long journey by rented car, Ram identified his 17-year-old son around noon on Monday. Retul, who had dropped out of school, was on his way to Chennai in search of work to support his family.

Investigations into the crash suggest a signaling failure as a possible cause of the three-train collision, marking one of the deadliest rail disasters in India’s history. In response, authorities have recommended that the CBI conduct an investigation into the incident.

After two days of repair work, partial train service resumed on the tracks, allowing some semblance of normalcy to return. Hundreds of workers, aided by excavators, removed the mangled train coaches from the site of the accident.

As the affected families grapple with immense grief, the investigation into the crash aims to shed light on the circumstances and factors contributing to this devastating tragedy.
