The Punjab Local Government has embarked on a massive infrastructure development initiative, allocating a staggering Rs. 150 billion for road reconstruction projects spanning across the province. The road rehabilitation plan, entrusted to municipal corporations, focuses primarily on revamping main and link roads to enhance connectivity and mobility.

In tandem with the road reconstruction efforts, the provincial government has set up a working group to finalize proposals for the implementation of a garbage collection tax. This group, comprising Senior Minister Mariam Aurangzeb, Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique, and Special Secretary Asia Gul, aims to streamline waste management systems and ensure sustainable funding for garbage collection services. The proposed tax structure ranges from Rs. 50 to Rs. 500, depending on the size and location of households.

Additionally, plans have been unveiled for the construction of five expressways aimed at further bolstering the travel infrastructure in Punjab. With a budget of Rs. 139.5 billion approved by Chief Minister, these expressways include vital routes such as Bahawalpur N5 to Jhangra Sharqi Interchange, Multan to Vehari, Chichawatni to Pir Mahal-Shorkot to Garhmahraja-Chowk Azam to Layyah, Sahiwal to Samundri Interchange, and Faisalabad Chiniot to Kamal Pur Interchange to Tehsil Chowk Chiniot.

Each expressway is strategically designed to address specific connectivity needs, with budgets ranging from Rs. 11 billion to Rs. 66 billion, covering distances varying from 24 to 199 kilometers. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has pledged a thorough investigation into the recent alarming development concerning ‘suspicious letters’ received by judges, including four Supreme Court justices, including Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa. The letters, containing threatening content along with suspicious powder, have also been reported by eight judges of Islamabad High Court and four judges of Lahore High Court.

Chairing a federal cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif assured a responsible approach towards addressing the matter, emphasizing the necessity to avoid political exploitation of the situation. Notably, an inquiry commission has been formed following consultation with former Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, who recused himself from heading the commission.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has taken suo motu notice of the matter, indicating the gravity of the situation. Concurrently, the Prime Minister has decided to conduct a sectoral review of ministries to identify and address any underlying issues, with a particular focus on steering the economy towards self-reliance.

Despite prevailing economic challenges, there has been satisfaction expressed over a gradual decrease in inflation. Steps are underway to mitigate inflation, unemployment, and poverty, underlining the government’s commitment to fostering financial stability.

Confidence prevails in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) releasing the last tranche of $1.1 billion under the standby agreement this month, with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb’s visit to Washington aimed at negotiating a new program with the IMF further reflecting the government’s proactive stance in addressing economic concerns.

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has been elected as the new Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, succeeding Sirajul Haq, in a significant transition for the party’s leadership. The election, which saw the participation of approximately 45,000 party members from across the nation, recorded an impressive turnout with around 82 percent overall participation.

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, who previously served as the Karachi Ameer of the party since 2013, is poised to take the oath of office by April 7. He becomes the sixth individual to hold the top position in JIP. Rehman’s educational background includes a degree in civil engineering and a master’s in Islamic history. His political journey within the party dates back to 2000 when he became a member of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Rehman’s involvement in politics extends beyond his new role, having twice served as Nazim-e-Ala of the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT). Notably, he contested mayoral elections in Karachi previously, though he was defeated by Murtaza Wahab of PPP. However, in the 2024 General Elections, he secured a provincial assembly seat from PS-129 but opted to vacate it without taking the oath, claiming that an independent candidate supported by PTI had won.

Sirajul Haq’s resignation from the party’s top position on February 12, following the defeat in the general elections on February 8, paved the way for Rehman’s election. As Rehman assumes leadership, Jamaat-e-Islami looks ahead to a new chapter under his guidance.
