German missions in Pakistan to celebrate Unity Day on October 3

KARACHI: Germany is celebrating the 31st anniversary of German reunification on October 3, 2021, a statement said on Friday.

This year is very special for both Pakistan and Germany, as they commemorate the 70th anniversary of cordial diplomatic ties.

Due to the pandemic, the German missions in Pakistan must sadly once again refrain from the usual German national day festivities.

Instead, the German Embassy Islamabad and the German Consulate General in Karachi decided to go online on Sunday, October 3, 2021, at 6:30 pm on the embassy’s Facebook page and YouTube channel for a digital celebration with very special guests.

“Naturally, we regret that we cannot celebrate in person with all our friends and partners here in Islamabad. However, we are making the best of it by offering everyone a glimpse into what we at the German missions are up to on a day-to-day basis. Do join us – there will be some great music, too!”, Bernhard Schlagheck, German ambassador to Pakistan, said.

“Having been posted to Karachi for a year already, I am still amazed by all the warmth and hospitality extended to me and my family by the wonderful people of Sindh. We wanted to give something back by hosting this virtual event where we showcase some of the many fields in which Germany and Pakistan work together to an amazing effect,” Holger Ziegeler, German consul general in Karachi, said.

“Germany firmly believes in further deepening its bilateral ties with Pakistan in all fields. We are looking forward to working and further contributing to that goal during our time in Pakistan,” he added.

What does the digital event entail?

First, the Pakistani national anthem will be played by Ustad Ashraf Sharif and friends, a fusion music group based in Germany; followed by the German national anthem by young tabla virtuosos Riyan and Isaac.

After that German Ambassador to Pakistan Bernhard Schlagheck, German Consul General in Karachi Holger Ziegeler, and Head of Economic Cooperation and Youth Ambassador Marion Pfennigs briefed the participants about their life and work in Pakistan.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas will give a short address. The event will also be joined by Village Food sensation Mubashir Siddique who will try out some German recipes with the embassy’s Head of Commerce Christian Böttcher.

Dr Chris Schmotzer, director of the Rawalpindi Leprosy Hospital, will brief about her journey of more than 30 decades in which she has dedicated herself to the treatment of leprosy, tuberculosis and skin diseases in Pakistan.

The celebrations will be concluded by a classical music piece: The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra will play Edward Elgar’s Variation IX, ‘Nimrod’, conducted by Daniel Barenboim.

MINISTRY OF MARITIME AFFAIRS CELEBRATES WORLD MARITIME DAY 2021

Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Government of Pakistan is celebrating World Maritime Day 2021 by organizing a seminar at Beach Luxury Hotel, Karachi. World Maritime Day is observed every year on the last Thursday of September to celebrate the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) founding in 1958, 2021 being the 73rd year.

The theme of this year’s World Maritime Day is “Seafarers: at the core of shipping’s future”. The seminar seeks to increase the visibility of seafarers by drawing attention to the invaluable contribution seafarers make to keep international trade flowing and to keep the world economy running.

Local and international speakers shall be participating in the seminar. President of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi addressed the participants online while Governor Sindh, Mr. Imran Ismail was the chief guest of the event to be hosted by the Minister of Maritime Affairs Syed Ali Haider Zaidi. The event was also be broadcast online globally.

Giving due recognition to the contribution seafarers make, for the first time in Pakistan, the Federal Government on the recommendation of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs has declared seafarers as ‘Key Workers’, thus fulfilling international obligation in line with the resolutions of the IMO.

The present Government has also initiated a solution to the longstanding unresolved issue of seafarers. A big challenge was the digitalization of their Seaman Cards and Books to increase efficiency and reduce red tape. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs in collaboration with NADRA for the first time issued machine-readable SID cards to over 30,000 Pakistani seafarers. With the availability of data online, the process of sign-on and sign-off has been streamlined. Shifting of data online has also increased reliability and security for countries issuing visas to seafarers travelling abroad to join vessels.

World Maritime Day was first celebrated on 17th March 1978. The world relies on a safe, secure, and efficient international shipping industry, which is an essential component for economic growth in a sustainable manner. International shipping transports more than 80% of global trade to people and communities all over the world. World Maritime Day provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the world’s 1.5 million seafarers for their unique and all-too-often overlooked contribution to the well-being of the general public.

The celebration of World Maritime Day 2021 is particularly important as it coincides with Pakistan’s candidature in this year’s elections to the IMO Council in Category “C” at the 32nd session of IMO Assembly, to be held in December 2021.

Pakistani stalls showcase export-oriented products at China-ASEAN Expo

NANNING: Pakistani traders and businessmen showcased marble, wood handicrafts, carpets, leather garments and other products of the country at the 18th China-Asean Expo in Nanning, China on Friday.

Pakistan, with an exhibition area of 81 square metres, has set up a pavilion, as well as 24 booths to showcase its national image and display its products to further promote its exchange and cooperation with China and Asean countries.

Pakistan Ambassador to China Moin ul Haque visited different stalls and talked with the Pakistani businessmen and buyers.

Talking to APP, he said, the China-Asean Expo will serve as a platform to boost in-depth development of China-Pakistan cooperation and all-weather strategic partnership of cooperation.

He said like the previous year, Pakistan is participating in this year’s expo as a Special Partner Country this year too, adding that Pakistan attended the 17th CAEXPO with the same honorary title and set up its pavilion and booths to promote its products.

Pakistan, he said, is one of the countries along the Belt and Road and a geographical neighbour to the Asean countries. For many years, Pakistan has actively joined the CAEXPO, through which to enhance its exchange and cooperation with China and other countries along the Belt and Road.

He said the China-Asean countries have a population of over two billion people and a more than $18 trillion economy, which provides a good platform to expand its trade with these countries.

Ambassador Haque said that Pakistan’s textile sector has a complete supply chain system and the agriculture sector makes it a more competitive country in the world. The government is also focusing on the value addition of these sectors, which would help promote exports.

Pakistan is the fourth largest milk producing country and now we are paying attention to produce value-added dairy products such as cheese and butter, which were in high demand in China, as well as Asean countries.

He said Pakistan is one of the leading countries in manufacturing sports products, especially footballs are famous across the globe and other leather sports products, including boxing gloves.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Pakistan, he said, adding that by seizing the cooperative and business opportunities of the 18th CAEXPO, Pakistan is all set to introduce its products to promote business and trade.

Ambassador Haque said that after signing the Free Trade Agreement Phase-II, Pakistani traders could export over 1,000 different goods to China, adding: “We have seen big improvement in our exports to China after the signing of that agreement.”

The expo is hosted by the departments in charge of economic development and trade in China and 10 Asean countries in collaboration with the Asean Secretariat.

With a theme of “Sharing Opportunities Created by the New Land-Sea Corridor, Building the China-Asean Community with a Shared Future”, this year’s expo is being held in a mixed model of Physical + Online CAEXPO adopted for the second time.

An exhibition area of 12,000 square metres has been allocated to the exhibitors of the 10 Asean countries, and each Asean country has its own exhibition area, as usual.

Day five of YLC let its young participants know deeply about History, Politics of Region to become future leaders

[Karachi, 6th Sept, 2021] Day five of the ongoing Young Leaders Conference (YLC) on Sunday was dedicated to let its participants know about the history and politics of the region as an essential component of their upbringing to assume leadership roles in the near future.

The day’s theme was “History and Politics-Iqtidar” and the champions of the proceedings were Shireen Naqvi and Faizan Arafat.

The day’s proceedings were conducted with the aim that the budding leaders of tomorrow should have ample knowledge about politics and history to act as responsible global citizens. The day was intended to promote political, cultural, and historical awareness among the young participants of the conference. The conference’s different sessions also explored the need for diplomacy in the present age of turmoil for promoting peace in the global environment.

Faizan Arafat’s session titled “The History of Human Struggle” highlighted the importance of history and how it was termed the black box of cause and effect because of its opaque nature. He talked about five important points in the past 500 years’ history that shaped nations and their ways of living.

Arfa Syeda Zehra’s session titled “Sach ka Samna” was an attempt to shed light on the blind spots in our history books and made the participants aware as to how these narratives come about.

She said in her talk that a large part of our identity stemmed from our history and culture that is deep within our land. It is ironic then, how history as we know it, does show us the full picture.

“Understanding the circumstances that have brought us here today are crucial for us to understand what it means to be a Pakistani,” she said.

Justice (retired) Nasira Iqbal talked about the issue of Rights Vs Responsibilities while saying that if someone was spreading negativity and hate speech in the name of freedom of speech, he or she was not taking responsibility for their actions. “If we don’t take responsibility for our actions and their impact, and continue to exploit our rights in the name of freedom, we will move towards a chaotic and dysfunctional society rather than a society where we strive for collective benefit,” she added.

Shireen Naqvi and Faizan Arafat’s joint session “Rewind & Forward” was aimed at telling the YLC participants that our current reality is shaped by a multitude of events in our history, every one of which affects our state today. “Everything that is happening today will be history one day, and everything we do today shapes what the world will look like tomorrow,” the participants were informed.

Shireen Naqvi in her session “Alliance Formation” talked about the frequent formation of alliances by different political parties in the country to come into power and to what extent this culture affects political governance in Pakistan.

Barrister Shahida Jamil conducted the Presidential Debate of the day.

Waqar Ali ended the day by uplifting the participants to face the challenges in their lives ahead.

Day 4 was aimed to recognise the Human Skills that are becoming increasingly important in today’s technology driven world.

Day four of the Young Leaders Conference (YLC) was aimed at providing the best guidance to its participants to choose a career path in their upcoming life in the backdrop of massive changes in the job market the world over due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The theme of the day was “Enterprise and Employment-AITEBAAR” with Champ Waleed Anwar as the star participant of the proceedings.

Speakers belonging to diverse professional backgrounds also taught the YLC participants about the skills and qualifications required to practice entrepreneurship or to enter the realm of start-ups in their practical life.

They also counselled about the fundamental changes in the businesses and industries due to heavy reliance on technology, computers, and the Internet to do professional work as the job market becomes extremely challenging due to the ever-shrinking requirement of human resources.

Umair Jaliawala, Trainer and founder at Torquie joined the conference for his session. Umair Jallawala said the people around the world had to face unexpected challenges and realities while fulfilling their professional commitments during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Companies had to rethink and reshape their structures, many failed or took a hit but some rose to the challenge and used this crisis as an opportunity for taking massive action,” he said.

He provided guidance to the participants in order to help them nurture the ability to identify a crisis associated with their professional lives and what skills set was required to tackle the challenging situation in the occupational surroundings.

Shahbaz Islam in his session said that many existing jobs would likely become obsolete soon due to the rapid rise of technology and automation.

He said research showed that around 40 per cent of the workforce would require re-skilling by 2025, causing great anxieties amongst the youth entering the job market in such turbulent times.

“However, we must realise that although technology has replaced many human jobs, this recent shift has made certain human skills more valuable than ever. Skills such as adaptability, creative problem solving and effective decision making-commonly called soft skills-are now so essential that employers have started to call them core skills,” he said.

Junaid Alam taught the participants about the fast-emerging world of start-ups and its relevance for the Pakistani youth.

Arsal Fahim spoke on the need to gain financial literacy to sharpen their professional skills through a very engaging and fun activity “Money matters”

Arif Pyarall shared his ideas about establishing long-lasting and successful ties with the industry.

The day ended with Extra Corp  by Waqar Ali,  a simulation in which team SoL aware participants about inclusion, diversity and acceptance of others. This whole simulation revolves around only one fundamental, that is, no matter what color, cast, gender you are. Everyone is equal and nobody is superior to others.

Gold price in Pakistan surges in line with international market

The price of gold resumed its uptrend in the domestic market and rose by Rs1,300 to close at Rs112,300 per tola on Saturday in line with the surge in the international bullion market.

The rates went up by Rs1,300 per tola to Rs112,300 and surged by Rs1,115 per 10-grams to Rs95,165 compared to Thursday’s prices.

Gold prices clocked in at R111,050 per tola and Rs95,165 on Thursday (September 2).

Gold advanced internationally as a slower-than-expected US jobs growth in August drove the dollar lower, casting doubts on the Federal Reserve’s tapering timeline, which provided support to the yellow metal.

International gold prices also increased by $13 to close at $1,830.25 on Saturday.

Gold is considered one of the safest investments; hence, its price is skyrocketing as investment is pouring in at a rapid pace. Since the dollar continues to weaken day after day, investors’ confidence in the currency has tumbled and they have diverted their investment to gold.

Speaking to Geo.tv, AA Commodities Director Adnan Agar said: “Gold prices increased on the back of dismal US employment data.”

The analyst added that gold prices recorded a significant increase because the US dollar lost ground in the international market.

“Bullion prices are expected to increase further during the next week,” Agar predicted.

However, it is pertinent to mention that the gold rates in Pakistan are around Rs4,000 below cost compared to the gold rate in the Dubai market.

Meanwhile, silver prices remained unchanged at Rs1,430 per tola and Rs1,226 per 10 gram on Saturday.

Other important speakers of the day included Nisha Rao and Taha Sabir who spoke on the issue of emotional intelligence.

Different sessions of the day were held on the topics of inclusive communities, self-defence, emergency medical services, sign language, emotional intelligence and its impact on mental health, defining fears instead of goals.
